DON’T FORGET WHO GOD IS: WALKING IN FREEDOM, AUTHORITY, AND FEARLESS FAITH By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7

Introduction

One of the greatest battles every believer faces is the battle against fear, doubt, and spiritual intimidation. Throughout history, Satan has continually used fear as a weapon to weaken, discourage, and imprison people. Fear attacks the mind, drains spiritual strength, destroys confidence, and attempts to separate believers from trust in God. Yet the Word of God repeatedly reminds us that fear was never meant to rule the lives of those who belong to Jesus Christ.

The message before us is a divine reminder from the Living God calling His people back to confidence, spiritual authority, and unwavering faith. God declares clearly, “Don’t forget who I Am.” This statement is not merely a comforting phrase; it is a powerful revelation of the character, supremacy, and eternal dominion of God Himself. Human systems rise and fall. Nations come and go. Idols crumble. Demonic kingdoms collapse. But the Living God remains forever unchanged, undefeated, and sovereign over all creation.

In these troubled times, multitudes are overwhelmed by anxiety, uncertainty, confusion, depression, fear of the future, fear of economic collapse, fear of violence, fear of rejection, and fear of death. Sadly, many believers who were once spiritually strong have allowed fear to enter their hearts and dominate their thoughts. Instead of standing in the authority of Christ, they have become prisoners of worry and emotional torment.

However, God never intended His children to live as captives of fear. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, believers were delivered from bondage and brought into spiritual liberty. The Holy Spirit was given to guide, strengthen, protect, and empower the people of God to walk in victory rather than defeat.

This lesson reveals the importance of remembering who God truly is and understanding the spiritual authority available to those who remain faithful to Him. It explains how believers are called to resist fear, obey the Holy Spirit, discern spiritual dangers, and remain on the “King’s Highway” of righteousness and truth. It also emphasizes the reality of spiritual warfare and the necessity of maintaining close fellowship with God in order to overcome the forces of darkness.

Most importantly, this teaching calls believers to rise as warriors of righteousness who refuse to surrender to fear, deception, compromise, or demonic oppression. God desires His people to live in peace, confidence, discernment, courage, and unwavering trust in His eternal power.

The Importance of Remembering Who God Is

“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.” — Isaiah 45:5

One of the greatest spiritual dangers believers face is forgetting the greatness, supremacy, and faithfulness of God. Whenever people lose sight of who God is, fear immediately begins to take control of their hearts and minds.

Fear grows wherever faith weakens. Anxiety increases whenever believers focus more on circumstances than on the power of God. The enemy constantly attempts to magnify problems, dangers, and uncertainties in order to cause believers to doubt the sovereignty of God.

Yet God remains the Almighty Creator of Heaven and Earth. He is not limited by economic systems, political powers, demonic attacks, or human opposition. He rules eternally and reigns supreme above all things.

The message reminds believers that idols, human systems, and earthly powers eventually crumble into dust, but God remains forever. This truth should bring confidence and stability to every child of God.

When believers truly remember who God is, they develop spiritual boldness. Fear loses its grip because faith becomes stronger than circumstances. Confidence grows because trust is placed in the unchanging nature of God rather than unstable earthly conditions.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” — Hebrews 13:8

God desires His people to remain firmly rooted in the understanding that He is their source, protector, provider, refuge, and strength. No force in existence possesses greater authority than the Living God.

Freedom From Fear Is the Believer’s Highway

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” — Galatians 5:1

Fear is a form of spiritual bondage. It paralyzes faith, weakens courage, clouds discernment, and hinders obedience to God. The enemy uses fear to imprison minds and prevent believers from walking in their divine purpose.

The message declares that those who have been made free through Jesus Christ are not meant to return to the bondage of fear. Deliverance from fear is not temporary emotional relief; it is a spiritual position established through faith in Christ.

God describes freedom from fear as “The King’s Highway.” This imagery reveals that walking in fearless faith is the proper road for every believer. It is the path of obedience, confidence, discernment, and spiritual authority.

However, remaining on this road requires attentiveness to the Holy Spirit. Believers cannot overcome fear merely through positive thinking or emotional strength. Victory comes through obedience to God and continual dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD.” — Psalm 37:23

Whenever believers ignore the voice of the Holy Spirit, they become vulnerable to wrong paths, spiritual traps, deception, and dangerous compromises. The enemy presents many roads disguised as excitement, pleasure, adventure, or opportunity, but hidden beneath them are destruction, bondage, and spiritual ruin.

This is why spiritual discernment is essential. The Holy Spirit warns, directs, corrects, and protects believers from dangers they may not naturally perceive.

The Necessity of Spiritual Warfare

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” — Ephesians 6:12

The Christian life is not passive. Every believer is engaged in spiritual warfare whether they recognize it or not. Demonic forces constantly attempt to influence thoughts, emotions, decisions, relationships, and spiritual direction.

The message strongly emphasizes the necessity of resisting fear and confronting the powers of darkness through spiritual authority. Believers are not called to become victims of demonic oppression. They are called to become victorious warriors through Jesus Christ.

Many believers become spiritually weak because they avoid spiritual warfare. They tolerate fear instead of rebuking it. They entertain anxious thoughts instead of resisting them through prayer, worship, and the Word of God.

God calls His people to rise up spiritually and fight against the forces attempting to bring them into captivity. Spiritual warfare includes prayer, fasting, worship, obedience, faith, discernment, and standing firmly upon the promises of God.

Jesus Himself demonstrated how spiritual warfare is fought. He spent time in the secret place with the Father. He resisted Satan using the Word of God. He never surrendered to intimidation, temptation, or fear.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7

The authority believers possess comes through the Blood of Jesus Christ and the power of His Name. Fear cannot dominate a believer who fully understands the authority available in Christ.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Guidance and Protection

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” — John 16:13

The Holy Spirit is not merely a theological concept. He is the active presence of God dwelling within believers. One of His primary roles is guiding the people of God safely through life’s challenges, temptations, and spiritual battles.

The message repeatedly emphasizes the importance of listening carefully to the Holy Spirit. Divine guidance protects believers from spiritual traps, destructive relationships, dangerous decisions, and deceptive influences.

Many people suffer unnecessary pain because they ignore the warnings and instructions of the Holy Spirit. God speaks through conviction, discernment, Scripture, prayer, and spiritual sensitivity.

The Holy Spirit also activates spiritual discernment within believers. Through the gift of discerning spirits, believers can recognize whether influences originate from God, the flesh, or demonic forces.

This discernment is essential in the modern world where deception is increasing rapidly. Not everything attractive, exciting, or emotionally appealing comes from God. Some paths are specifically designed by the enemy to lure believers away from righteousness.

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” — Proverbs 14:12

Those who walk closely with the Holy Spirit develop wisdom, spiritual awareness, and protection against deception.

The Peace of God Versus the Torment of Fear

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment.” — 1 John 4:18

Fear produces torment because it separates the mind from trust in God. Fear creates inner instability, emotional exhaustion, confusion, and spiritual weakness. The enemy uses fear to keep people distracted, discouraged, and spiritually ineffective.

God never intended His children to live under constant torment. Instead, He offers supernatural peace that surpasses human understanding.

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7

This peace is not dependent upon external circumstances. It comes through confidence in God’s presence, promises, and power. Even during chaos, uncertainty, persecution, or hardship, believers can remain stable because their trust is anchored in God.

The message warns believers not to “drink the cup of demons” by continually entertaining fearful thoughts and influences. Fearful thinking weakens spiritual authority and opens doors to oppression.

Instead, believers are called to saturate themselves with prayer, worship, Scripture, thanksgiving, and faith in the Name of Jesus Christ.
