Losing Everything to Gain Eternity: A Call to Repentance and Obedience By Major. Frank Materu
Main Bible Text:
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36 (NKJV)
In a world that often values wealth and material acquisition over spiritual truth, God’s call remains clear: our worth is not in what we accumulate, but in how we stand before Him.
Many have judged themselves by their possessions and have neglected the state of their souls.
But God is bringing down the idols of this world to reveal the importance of eternal life in Him.
1. A People Under Command
God has called His people to live under His command alone—the command of the one true God who directs and sustains life.
We are blessed to have the privilege to walk uprightly in Him, and He calls us to be thankful for this path of righteousness.
However, God does not call us to idolize anything, not even our own image. Instead, He wants us to be moldable, useful in His hands for His purpose.
God will use us in various ways and at different times, so we must not cling to any past image of ourselves or preconceived notions of what we should be.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)
2. Obedience in an Age of Disobedience
We are living in a time when disobedience has a stronghold on society, affecting even those who proclaim to follow God.
Absolute obedience is required from His true followers in these times, as His people are called to manifest His Kingdom, His power, and His glory rather than the works of iniquity.
We are to demonstrate to a broken, corrupt world that pleasing God is our highest calling.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22 (NKJV)
God is raising an obedient people, valiant for the truth, who will listen to Him and walk in His ways.
These are not people ruled by self-interest, which leads to spiritual death, but people committed to the command of their Maker and God.
3. The Power of Repentance
Repentance is a safeguard, keeping us sober and alert to the deceptions of our own flesh.
It guards us from falling into unbelief and keeps us aligned with God.
When we live a life of repentance, we remain grounded and are less likely to be swept away by sin.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
Continual repentance allows us to receive God’s instruction with humility.
Those who grow proud and arrogant end up accusing and resisting God, forgetting that true wisdom and understanding come from Him.
4. Shielded in Him through Repentance
God has provided all that we need to remain shielded and guided in His truth.
Through a life of repentance, we are directed by His light, and we can experience His faithful protection.
In repentance, we find humility—a heart open to God’s guidance and a spirit willing to receive His wisdom.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:17 (NKJV)
Repentance keeps us humble, sober, and alert, allowing us to avoid the pitfalls of unbelief.
When we live in a state of repentance, we place ourselves in God’s hands, open to His leading, and shielded from deception.
This is the way God preserves us, keeping us close to Him.
5. Conclusion: Embracing Eternal Life Over Material Gain
As we navigate a world focused on material wealth and status, God reminds us of what truly matters: our eternal life in Him.
Losing everything in this world means nothing if it leads to eternal gain.
Let us remain humble, obedient, and steadfast in repentance, walking in God’s truth and staying vigilant against the pull of self-interest and worldly values.
“For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)
Will you choose to let go of the temporary and embrace the eternal?
Will you stand with God in obedience and repentance, forsaking all for the treasure of eternal life?
