Introduction

One of the most dangerous spiritual diseases that has afflicted humanity throughout history is pride. Pride is subtle, destructive, deceptive, and deadly. It blinds individuals to their true condition before God and causes them to trust in themselves rather than humbly submitting to the Lord. Pride has destroyed kingdoms, corrupted religious systems, divided families, and separated multitudes from the saving grace of God.

In this lesson, God warns His people concerning “the leaven of pride.” Just as a small amount of leaven spreads throughout an entire lump of dough, pride spreads gradually through the human heart until it corrupts thoughts, attitudes, actions, and spiritual understanding. Pride does not remain isolated. It influences entire communities, generations, institutions, and religious movements. It produces spiritual blindness, self-righteousness, rebellion, hypocrisy, and resistance to repentance.

The message focuses particularly on the religious leaders during the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. Though they appeared outwardly righteous and holy before men, inwardly they were consumed with pride and contempt toward God. Their hearts had become hardened. Rather than humbling themselves before the truth spoken by Jesus Christ, they opposed Him, criticized Him, and eventually conspired to destroy Him. Their pride prevented them from recognizing their need for repentance and salvation.

At the same time, the lesson reveals the mercy and patience of God toward those who sincerely repent. Jesus Christ continually called sinners to repentance, restoration, and renewed fellowship with God. Those who responded humbly experienced forgiveness, transformation, healing, and newness of life. Those who refused repentance remained imprisoned within pride and spiritual darkness.

This teaching also demonstrates that pride continues to affect humanity today. Many people wear masks of pretension while inwardly suffering from spiritual emptiness, guilt, fear, and separation from God. Pride creates invisible prisons that hold individuals captive in misery and deception. Yet God declares that there is still a way out: repentance through Jesus Christ.

This lesson therefore calls believers to reject every form of pride, remain humble before God, receive correction from the Holy Spirit, and continually walk in repentance, gratitude, truth, and humility. Through Jesus Christ, believers are set free from the deadly plague of pride and brought into the freedom and life of God’s Kingdom.

THE LEAVEN OF PRIDE

“Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” — Matthew 16:6

Jesus warned His disciples about the dangerous influence of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Their greatest problem was not merely false teaching but pride. Pride had become deeply rooted within their hearts and had corrupted their understanding of God.

Leaven spreads silently and gradually. In the same way, pride often begins subtly. A person may begin by seeking recognition, admiration, control, or self-exaltation. Over time, these attitudes grow stronger until pride dominates the heart and blinds the individual spiritually.

The lesson reveals that pride caused multitudes to perish spiritually. Pride convinced the religious leaders that they were already righteous and therefore had no need for repentance. Because they trusted in themselves, they rejected the truth spoken by Jesus Christ.

“For every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” — Luke 14:11

Pride is dangerous because it prevents honest self-examination. Proud people often compare themselves with others rather than measuring themselves according to God’s holiness. As a result, they become self-righteous, critical, judgmental, and resistant to correction.

God views pride as abomination because pride attempts to elevate human self above divine authority. Pride resists surrender and rejects dependence upon God. Instead of producing life, pride produces spiritual decay and destruction.

THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND THEIR REJECTION OF JESUS

“He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.” — John 1:10

During His earthly ministry, Jesus confronted the hypocrisy and pride of the religious establishment. Although these leaders possessed knowledge of Scripture and held positions of authority, their hearts were far from God.

The lesson explains that when the religious leaders demanded signs from Jesus, their motives were not sincere. They were not seeking truth; they were searching for reasons to accuse and criticize Him. Their pride caused them to reject the very Messiah whom the Scriptures had foretold.

Jesus discerned their hardened hearts and refused to cater to their unbelief. Instead, He continued preaching repentance, righteousness, and the Kingdom of God.

“This people honoureth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.” — Matthew 15:8

Pride had so blinded these leaders that they believed themselves spiritually superior. They wore self-righteousness like a garment while inwardly remaining full of corruption and rebellion.

The tragedy is that many ordinary people were also influenced by these prideful leaders. Those who followed them often rejected Jesus and lost the opportunity for salvation. Yet those who humbled themselves and repented experienced transformation and new life.

This reveals an important spiritual principle: humility opens the heart to truth, while pride closes the heart against God.

THE CALL TO REPENTANCE AND NEWNESS OF LIFE

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” — Acts 3:19

One of the central themes of Jesus’ ministry was repentance. Repentance is not merely emotional sorrow for sin; it is a sincere turning away from sin and returning wholeheartedly to God.

The lesson explains that those who were convicted by the Holy Spirit responded by changing their ways. Conviction is evidence of God’s mercy because it reveals sin in order to bring restoration.

Proud people resist conviction because pride refuses to acknowledge wrongdoing. Humble people, however, receive correction and allow God to transform their lives.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3

Repentance restores fellowship with God. It breaks the power of spiritual blindness and allows individuals to walk in truth, freedom, and peace.

The lesson also emphasizes the continuing necessity of preaching repentance in this generation. Humanity remains trapped in deception, rebellion, and pride, yet God still extends mercy through Jesus Christ.

No matter how deeply pride has affected a person’s life, repentance opens the door to forgiveness, restoration, and spiritual renewal.

THE WAR AGAINST TRUTH

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” — John 8:32

The devil hates truth because truth exposes deception and sets people free from spiritual bondage. Throughout history, Satan has opposed those who boldly proclaim God’s truth.

The lesson reveals that many individuals who stood for truth suffered persecution and even martyrdom. Yet their earthly suffering did not separate them from God’s eternal reward.

“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” — 2 Timothy 3:12

Religious pride often becomes especially hostile toward genuine truth because truth threatens human control, hypocrisy, and self-exaltation. The religious leaders during Jesus’ ministry feared losing their authority and influence, so they resisted Him violently.

The same spiritual conflict continues today. Many people reject biblical truth because it confronts sinful lifestyles and prideful attitudes. Yet God continues raising faithful believers who courageously proclaim truth regardless of opposition.

Truth remains essential because only truth can bring genuine freedom and reconciliation with God.

THE PRISON OF PRIDE

“Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” — John 8:34

One of the strongest images in this lesson is the description of “Pride Prison.” Pride imprisons individuals spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Behind the walls of pride, many people suffer inward torment, guilt, emptiness, bitterness, fear, and spiritual isolation.

Some know deep within themselves that they have departed from God, yet pride prevents them from admitting their need for repentance. Instead, they wear masks of pretension while inwardly carrying sorrow and pain.

The lesson explains that pride alters personalities and spreads its destructive influence to others. Proud individuals often become controlling, critical, defensive, unforgiving, manipulative, and resistant to truth.

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” — Proverbs 14:12

Pride creates slavery because it separates individuals from God’s life and freedom. People trapped in pride may appear outwardly successful or religious while inwardly remaining spiritually empty and miserable.

God never intended humanity to live in such captivity. His desire is for people to experience the freedom, peace, joy, and restoration found through Jesus Christ.

HUMILITY: THE PATHWAY TO FREEDOM

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God.” — 1 Peter 5:6

Humility is the opposite of pride. Humility acknowledges dependence upon God and welcomes His correction, guidance, and truth. Humble individuals recognize their need for God’s mercy and remain teachable before Him.

The lesson encourages believers to allow humility to cover their lives. Humility protects the heart from deception and keeps believers spiritually healthy and receptive to God’s Spirit.

“Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.” — Proverbs 18:12

Gratitude also plays an important role in maintaining humility. Thankfulness reminds believers that every blessing, opportunity, and victory comes from God rather than human ability.

When believers remain humble and grateful, they experience God’s mercies daily. The Holy Spirit uplifts, guides, strengthens, and replenishes those who walk humbly before the Lord.

Humility ultimately leads to freedom because it removes the barriers separating individuals from God’s presence and truth.

Summary

This lesson reveals pride as a deadly spiritual plague that spreads like leaven and destroys multitudes. Pride blinded the religious leaders during Jesus’ ministry and caused them to reject the Son of God despite witnessing His truth and miracles.

Pride continues imprisoning many people today, producing spiritual blindness, self-righteousness, pretension, misery, and separation from God. The devil opposes truth and persecutes those who faithfully proclaim the message of repentance and salvation.

Yet God continually offers mercy through Jesus Christ. Repentance remains the only pathway out of the prison of pride and into the freedom, peace, forgiveness, and life found in God.

Humility, gratitude, repentance, and obedience enable believers to walk in fellowship with God and experience the fullness of His grace and truth.

Conclusion

The battle against pride is one of the greatest spiritual battles facing humanity. Pride destroys relationships, corrupts spiritual understanding, hardens hearts, and separates individuals from God’s life and truth.

Yet God lovingly calls people to repentance and restoration through Jesus Christ. No person is beyond the reach of God’s mercy if they are willing to humble themselves and turn to Him sincerely.

Believers must therefore remain vigilant against every form of pride and continually seek humility before God. Through humility and repentance, they will walk in freedom, peace, truth, and spiritual life.

“The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.” — Proverbs 15:33
