Escape or Endure? By Major Frank Materu
----Key Scripture
"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." (James 1:12)
----Introduction
In the journey of faith, believers often face the temptation to escape God's will, especially when challenges seem overwhelming. However, as demonstrated in the life of Jonah, running from God's calling leads to unnecessary suffering and missed opportunities to fulfill divine purposes. This lesson explores the importance of obedience and endurance in fulfilling God's will, emphasizing that our ultimate reward lies in enduring the race set before us.
----Jonah's Example: The Cost of Escaping God's Will
Jonah's attempt to flee from God's command brought him into a series of painful experiences. His rebellion was not only a rejection of God’s mission but also an act of self-will that led to his suffering. Through his story, we learn that obedience to God brings fulfillment, while rebellion leads to cycles of hardship and regret.
"Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 'Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.' Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh." (Jonah 3:1-3)
----Endurance as a Mark of Faith
Enduring trials and challenges is an integral part of the Christian walk. God calls His people to stand firm, trusting in His strength and provision. Endurance not only shapes our character but also prepares us for the eternal reward awaiting those who remain faithful.
"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." (Hebrews 12:1-2)
----The Danger of Carnality and Disobedience
Pursuing self-will and indulging in carnal desires lead to spiritual corruption. Those who prioritize their own comfort and desires over God’s commands risk falling into sin and forfeiting their eternal reward.
"The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." (Romans 8:6)
----Heavenly Rewards for Endurance
God promises abundant mercy and eternal joy to those who endure trials and remain faithful to His calling. Our earthly journey is temporary, and enduring it with faith leads to a crown of glory that far outweighs any suffering.
"And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away." (1 Peter 5:4)
----Summary
The Christian life requires courage, obedience, and endurance. Jonah’s story teaches us the cost of rebellion and the blessings of obedience. By enduring trials and staying faithful to God’s will, we align ourselves with His purpose and secure an eternal reward.
----Conclusion
As believers, we are called to embrace God’s will wholeheartedly, knowing that He provides the strength to endure every trial. Let us not seek escape but rather rejoice in the privilege of serving Him.
----Call to Action
Commit today to endure the race set before you with faith and perseverance. Trust in God’s strength, obey His commands, and remain steadfast in the face of challenges. Remember, your endurance brings glory to God and secures your eternal reward.
----Final Word of Encouragement
Be strong and courageous in the Lord. Do not let the trials of life deter you from fulfilling His will. As you endure, you will experience His abundant grace and the joy of His eternal promises. "The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one." (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
