RELIABLE OR RETREATING: THE CALL TO SPIRITUAL WARFARE AND FAITHFUL STEWARDSHIP By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

“The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.” — Psalm 78:9

Introduction

The question, “Can I rely on you?” is not merely a rhetorical inquiry; it is a divine examination of the heart. It pierces through outward appearances and confronts the core of one’s commitment to God. In every generation, God seeks men and women who are dependable, steadfast, and unwavering in their allegiance to Him. Yet history, both biblical and contemporary, reveals a troubling pattern—many begin well but fail in the moment of testing.

The reference to the tribe of Ephraim is both symbolic and sobering. They were equipped, trained, and positioned for battle, yet when the moment of confrontation arrived, they retreated. Their failure was not due to lack of resources but lack of resolve. This same condition is evident today in the spiritual lives of many believers who possess knowledge, access, and opportunity, yet lack the courage to stand firm in the face of spiritual warfare.

We are living in a time of intense spiritual conflict. The battle is not against flesh and blood but against forces operating in the unseen realm. Souls are at stake, destinies are being shaped, and eternity hangs in the balance. In such a time, neutrality is not an option. One is either advancing the Kingdom of God or inadvertently aiding the forces of darkness through passivity, fear, or compromise.

This lesson addresses the urgent need for reliability in the Kingdom of God. It exposes the dangers of spiritual cowardice, self-centered Christianity, and deception propagated by false systems. At the same time, it calls believers back to the original mandate of sacrificial service, unwavering faith, and active participation in the mission of Christ.

THE FAILURE OF THE UNRELIABLE: LESSONS FROM EPHRAIM

“They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in His law.” — Psalm 78:10

________________________________________

The tribe of Ephraim stands as a warning to all who are entrusted with spiritual responsibility. They were not unprepared; they were armed and capable. Yet their retreat in the day of battle revealed a deeper issue—unfaithfulness.

Unreliability in the Kingdom of God is not always obvious at the beginning. Many appear committed, enthusiastic, and even zealous. However, true reliability is tested under pressure. When opposition arises, when sacrifice is required, and when obedience becomes costly, the true nature of one’s commitment is revealed.

To retreat in the spiritual battle is to abandon one’s assignment. It is to leave the field vulnerable and to allow the enemy to advance. Such actions have consequences not only for the individual but also for those who depend on their faithfulness.

God is not seeking perfection but consistency. He desires those who will remain steadfast, who will endure hardship, and who will not turn back when the cost becomes evident.

THE REALITY OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…” — Ephesians 6:12

________________________________________

The Christian life is not a passive experience; it is an active engagement in spiritual warfare. This warfare is not visible to the natural eye, yet its effects are profoundly real. It involves the struggle for the souls of humanity and the advancement of God’s purposes on earth.

Many believers fail to recognize the seriousness of this battle. They live as though life is solely about personal comfort, success, and security. In doing so, they neglect their role as warriors in the Kingdom of God.

To be a warrior requires discipline, courage, and total surrender. It demands a willingness to endure hardship and to remain focused on the mission. Cowardice has no place in this calling. Through God, believers are empowered to be strong and courageous, not because of their own strength but because of His presence.

THE DANGER OF SELF-CENTERED SALVATION

“Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.” — 1 Corinthians 10:24

________________________________________

One of the most dangerous distortions in modern Christianity is the concept of self-centered salvation. This mindset views salvation as a personal benefit rather than a divine responsibility. It focuses on security rather than service.

Those who adopt this perspective often become indifferent to the condition of others. They are content with their own well-being and show little concern for the lost and suffering. This attitude contradicts the very nature of Christ, who came to seek and save the lost.

Salvation is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of a mission. Those who have received it are called to extend it to others. To ignore this responsibility is to misuse the gift and to betray its purpose.

THE EXAMPLE OF THE EARLY CHURCH

“And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel…” — Luke 9:6

________________________________________

The early Christians provide a powerful example of reliability and commitment. They did not pursue comfort or personal gain. Instead, they dedicated themselves to the mission of spreading the Gospel, regardless of the cost.

Their lives were marked by sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering faith. Many endured persecution, hunger, and even death. Yet they remained faithful because they understood the value of the mission entrusted to them.

Their message was not diluted to gain acceptance. They spoke truth boldly, calling people to repentance and transformation. Their impact was profound because their lives matched their message.

This stands in stark contrast to much of what is seen today, where convenience often replaces commitment, and compromise replaces conviction.

THE DECEPTION OF FALSE RELIGIOUS SYSTEMS

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 11:13

________________________________________

In every age, there are those who exploit religion for personal gain. They present themselves as spiritual leaders but operate with motives rooted in greed and self-interest.

These individuals often promise prosperity, success, and material blessings, appealing to the desires of the flesh. They create systems that prioritize financial gain over spiritual growth, leading many into deception.

The tragedy is that those who follow such systems often neglect their true responsibilities. They invest resources into promises that never materialize, while their own lives and families suffer.

True servants of God do not exploit others. They give freely, serve selflessly, and prioritize the well-being of those entrusted to them. Any system that contradicts these principles must be examined carefully.

THE CALL TO RELIABILITY AND SACRIFICE

“Endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” — 2 Timothy 2:3

________________________________________

The call of God is not to comfort but to commitment. It is a call to reliability—to be steadfast in every season, regardless of circumstances.

Reliability requires surrender. It means aligning one’s life with God’s purposes and remaining faithful even when it is difficult. It involves prioritizing the Kingdom of God above personal desires.

Those who answer this call become instruments of transformation. Their lives have purpose, their actions have impact, and their faithfulness contributes to the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

The question remains: Can God rely on you? This is not a question to be answered lightly. It requires honest reflection and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths.

Reliability is not determined by words but by actions. It is revealed in moments of testing, in choices made under pressure, and in the consistency of one’s walk with God.

The time for complacency has passed. The battle is ongoing, and the need for faithful warriors is urgent.
