DO NOT LET SIN REIGN: WALKING IN THE HIGHER WAY OF FREEDOM AND FAITHFULNESS By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.” – Romans 6:12 (KJV)

Full Introduction
The call of God to His people has always been a call to holiness, faithfulness, and freedom. From the beginning, humanity was created not for corruption, but for communion; not for degradation, but for dignity; not for slavery, but for fellowship with the Living God. Yet the tragic reality of sin has distorted this divine intention, leading multitudes into bondage, addiction, shame, and spiritual death.
The command is clear and urgent: do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies. This is not merely a suggestion, nor is it an unattainable ideal. It is a divine expectation empowered by divine grace. Through Jesus Christ, believers have been given the authority and ability to resist sin and to walk in righteousness. The cross was not only for forgiveness; it was for transformation. Salvation is not merely escape from judgment; it is deliverance from the dominion of sin.
In an age where moral compromise is normalized and lust is celebrated as freedom, the call to holiness may seem radical. Yet it remains the higher way. The way of the flesh leads to destruction, emptiness, and spiritual decay. The way of the Spirit leads to life, love, and enduring joy. God does not desire His people to resemble the world in its corruption, nor to exceed it in hypocrisy. He calls them to stand apart, to guard their hearts, and to remain faithful.
This lesson explores the reality of sin’s reign, the danger of returning to former bondage, the deception of lust, the tragedy of addiction, the conflict between the old nature and the new life in Christ, and the glorious freedom available through daily communion with God. It is a call to vigilance, gratitude, and spiritual intensity. It is an invitation to live in gladness rather than in the sorrow that accompanies sin.
Let us consider deeply what it means to walk in the higher way and to refuse the slavery of sin.

The Command and the Capacity to Resist Sin
________________________________________
The command not to let sin reign implies both responsibility and empowerment. God does not command what He does not enable. Through Jesus Christ, believers have died to sin and risen to new life.
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him… that henceforth we should not serve sin.” – Romans 6:6
Sin seeks to reign. It desires dominion, control, and obedience. When allowed to rule, it degrades and destroys. Yet the believer is no longer under its authority.
“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” – Romans 6:14
Grace is not permission to sin; it is power to overcome sin. The Living God expects His children to walk uprightly because He has imparted strength through His Spirit. The higher way is not sustained by human willpower alone but by divine empowerment.
To let sin reign is to surrender authority that Christ has already broken. To resist sin is to stand in the victory already secured.

The Danger of Letting Down One’s Guard
________________________________________
Even though victory is available, vigilance remains necessary. Scripture warns of sins that easily beset.
“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us.” – Hebrews 12:1
When believers lower their guard, they become vulnerable. The world’s influences, the lust of the flesh, and the deceitfulness of sin can gradually regain influence. No one falls suddenly without first drifting slowly.
God does not desire His people to resemble the heathen, nor to be consumed by worldly passions. Faithfulness requires intentional focus. Those who keep their vision fixed upon Him are preserved from wandering.
“I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.” – Psalm 16:8
Daily gratitude for God’s mercies strengthens vigilance. His mercies are new every morning, offering fresh grace for fresh battles.
“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed… they are new every morning.” – Lamentations 3:22–23
Each day presents a choice: awaken to bondage or awaken to freedom.

The Deception and Emptiness of Lust
________________________________________
Lust promises satisfaction but delivers emptiness. Adultery, fornication, and unrestrained desire have become normalized, yet their consequences remain destructive.
“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh… is not of the Father.” – 1 John 2:16
Lust never satisfies because it is rooted in insatiable craving. Those who pursue strange flesh and forbidden pleasures often find themselves emptier than before. Sin demands more while giving less.
Faithfulness to God parallels faithfulness in marriage. Spiritual adultery occurs when hearts wander toward the world.
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?” – James 4:4
God desires loyalty, devotion, and wholehearted love. To behave as though captivated by worldly attractions is to dishonor the covenant relationship established through Christ.
The wages of sin have always been death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life.” – Romans 6:23
Knowing this truth, why would anyone choose corruption over righteousness?

The Old Nature and the Battle Within
________________________________________
The old nature aligns with death. It shares the agenda of the adversary: destruction. The carnal mind resists God’s law.
“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God.” – Romans 8:7
Yielding to fleshly impulses reduces a person to brute behavior, governed by instinct rather than by Spirit-led wisdom. Humanity was not created for such degradation.
The believer must recognize the ongoing conflict between flesh and Spirit.
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.” – Galatians 5:17
Victory requires intentional alignment with the Spirit. Passions are not to be suppressed through denial but redirected through transformation. The Spirit empowers self-control.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is… temperance.” – Galatians 5:22–23
Self-control is evidence of spiritual maturity.

Freedom from Addiction and Bondage
________________________________________
Addiction illustrates the cruel mastery of sin. Whether through substances or destructive behaviors, bondage produces dread rather than joy. Those enslaved awaken each day compelled to pursue what harms them.
Jesus declared true freedom.
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” – John 8:36
Freedom is not merely release from guilt; it is liberation from chains. Returning to former bondage contradicts the gift of salvation.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” – Galatians 5:1
God’s desire is that His people rejoice in freedom rather than dread the day. Serving Him brings joy, not oppression.

Spiritual-Mindedness and Eternal Vision
________________________________________
Many mock spiritual-mindedness, claiming it renders people impractical. Yet those entirely consumed with earthly concerns lack eternal vision.
“To be spiritually minded is life and peace.” – Romans 8:6
Earthly-mindedness without spiritual awareness results in spiritual poverty. God created humanity for fellowship with Him, not for slavery to desires.
Beginning each day in communion with God centers the heart. Attentiveness to the Spirit throughout the day maintains direction. The believer is not called to obsess over fleshly tasks but to remain sensitive to divine guidance.
The higher way produces gladness. Jesus described His yoke as easy and His burden as light.
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:30
Serving God does not produce dread; it produces delight.
