STANDING FIRM IN CHRIST By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)

Introduction

To stand firm in Christ is to embrace the truth of God wholeheartedly. Whether it brings joy or discomfort, His truth is the key to freedom. Apart from His truth, we are bound by chains, enslaved, and imprisoned in spiritual darkness. It is in receiving and rejoicing in His truth that we are truly set free.

Embrace the Truth

"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32)

Rejoice in God's truth and accept it with gratitude. Resist the urge to seek grand gestures or displays. Instead, focus on steadfast progress in obedience to God.

We live in an age where people prioritize appearances and public recognition. However, standing firm in Christ requires quiet integrity and a commitment to following Him, whether in significant acts or small daily obediences.

The Power of Obedience

Obedience is life itself. True disciples of Christ do not seek the applause of men but aim to please God. Many will stand before Him empty-handed because they spent their lives on personal ambitions rather than living in obedience to Him.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9)

Weariness in doing good often stems from self-focus—expecting rewards based on personal merit rather than trusting God’s timing and grace. True perseverance comes when our eyes are fixed on God rather than our own efforts.

Recognize and Overcome Your Enemies

Know the spiritual forces working against you. Enemies will attempt to distract, weaken, and defeat you, but stand firm in the truth of Christ. When God commands and you obey, His blessings and covering will follow.

Rebellion, on the other hand, leads to separation from God, leaving us in a barren and dry place. Humanity’s fall began with disobedience, bringing sin and death into the world. Consider the weight of sin and the freedom found only in Christ's truth.

Rejoice in God’s Plan

God calls us to thanksgiving in every situation, no matter how small. Do not despise humble beginnings or minor tasks, for they are the seeds of greater things. Just as a tree grows from a tiny seed, so does God’s plan unfold from small acts of faithfulness.

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin." (Zechariah 4:10)

Stand Unshaken

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Standing firm in Christ means unwavering faith, even in the face of opposition. Avoid seeking approval from the world or its judgments. Instead, seek God's counsel and rely on His strength to persevere.

The world's fleeting values cannot compare to the eternal security found in Christ. Align your life with His will and leave behind the pursuit of worldly praise.

Seek to Please God Alone

Spiritual rebirth transforms our understanding, enabling us to see the world in His light. Those who have not been born again live in spiritual darkness, unable to perceive God's truth. Everything we do for God must be done wholeheartedly.

"Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people." (Ephesians 6:7)

Focus your life on pleasing God alone, letting go of the desire to satisfy human expectations. Pursue Him with all your heart, strength, and soul.

Conclusion

Standing firm in Christ is a daily commitment to truth, obedience, and unwavering faith. Resist the temptations of the world and align yourself with God’s will. Though the journey may be challenging, the reward is eternal life and a deep relationship with our Creator.

Seek Him, trust Him, and remain steadfast, for your labor in the Lord is never in vain.
