Overcoming Fear by Trusting in God By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." - Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)

Introduction

In today’s world, fear and uncertainty dominate the hearts of many. Nations rise and fall, crises abound, and the media amplifies confusion. For God’s people, these external forces can often lead to anxiety, doubt, and misplaced trust. However, we are called to a higher standard—to place our faith not in earthly powers but in the unshakable Kingdom of God. This lesson examines the dangers of succumbing to worldly fear and the importance of anchoring our lives in God’s truth and promises.

The Consequences of Living in Fear

Scriptural Reference: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” - Psalm 46:1-2

Many believers fall into the trap of fear because their focus shifts from God to worldly affairs. When we prioritize the events of nations and the agendas of rulers over God’s sovereignty, we invite anxiety into our hearts. This misplaced focus often leads to:

  1. Doubt and Unbelief: By fixating on the instability of the world, we begin to mistrust God’s ability to sustain us.
  2. Disobedience: Fear can lead us to compromise our faith, choosing worldly solutions instead of relying on divine guidance.
  3. Separation from God: When consumed by fear, our spiritual vision becomes clouded, making it difficult to discern God’s presence and direction.

Finding Refuge in God

Scriptural Reference: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.” - Psalm 23:1-2

God’s people are called to be citizens of His Kingdom, not subjects to the turmoil of the world. Trusting in God requires a deliberate shift in focus from the chaos around us to His eternal promises. Key steps to finding refuge include:

  1. Abiding in His Word: Regular meditation on scripture strengthens our faith and realigns our perspective.
  2. Prayer and Worship: Through intimate communication with God, we experience His peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).
  3. Living in Obedience: Walking in God’s ways keeps us under His protection and provision.

The Folly of Trusting in Carnal Solutions

Scriptural Reference: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” - Matthew 6:19

The world teaches us to rely on human systems—wealth, power, and influence—to secure our future. However, these are temporary and often lead to spiritual compromise. God warns us against:

  1. Carnal Ambitions: Pursuing self-centered desires distracts us from God’s eternal purposes.
  2. Pride and Arrogance: Trusting in our strength or human institutions ultimately leads to downfall (Proverbs 16:18).
  3. False Security: Earthly systems can never provide the lasting peace and protection that come from God alone.

The Call to Kingdom Citizenship

Scriptural Reference: “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” - Philippians 3:20

As believers, we are called to prioritize God’s Kingdom above all else. This requires:

  1. Faithful Stewardship: Using our resources and influence to advance God’s agenda rather than worldly ambitions.
  2. Separation from Worldly Agendas: Avoiding entanglement in the schemes and plots of the wicked.
  3. Focused Devotion: Keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Summary

Fear and confusion are tools the enemy uses to distract God’s people from their divine calling. When we place our trust in worldly systems, we lose sight of the eternal hope found in Christ. By shifting our focus back to God, we regain peace, purpose, and clarity, living as true citizens of His Kingdom.

Conclusion

In these treacherous times, let us reject fear and fully embrace the sovereignty of God. His Kingdom is unshakable, and His promises are sure. As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

May we continually seek refuge in Him, living in faith and obedience, and trusting His perfect plan for our lives. Amen.
