The Wrath of God on Those Who Turn to Idols By Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3
Introduction
In the world today, many who claim to follow the Living God have turned away from Him to serve other gods. They have given their hearts to idols of the heathen, seeking after worldly desires, and forsaking the true Creator. In this teaching, we will explore the consequences of turning to idols and the wrath of God that will fall upon those who choose other lovers above Him. The Lord's anger burns against those who have chosen to go astray, for He is a jealous God who demands complete devotion. This is a warning to those who live in rebellion and a call to repentance before the wrath of God is poured out.

The Dangers of Idolatry
“Those who make them will become like them, everyone who trusts in them.” – Psalm 115:8
Idolatry is not just the physical worship of images or statues, but the placing of anything—whether people, possessions, or desires—above God. When people bow to idols, they reject God’s sovereignty over their lives. In today’s world, many may not explicitly worship statues, but they serve other gods such as money, fame, relationships, or personal ambition. The Lord warns that when His people choose these idols, they will become enslaved by them. The very things they turn to for fulfillment will eventually become their oppressors.

The Consequences of Turning Away from God
“But they became disobedient and rebelled against You; they cast Your law behind their backs and killed Your prophets, who had admonished them to turn back to You.” – Nehemiah 9:26
The people of God are called to remain faithful to Him, but when they stray and worship idols, the consequences are severe. The Lord promises that those who forsake Him will experience His wrath. His fury will be vented upon them, and the idols they turn to will be the means of their downfall. These false gods will prove to be no source of help in times of need, but will bring about confusion, despair, and destruction. The wrath of God will turn them over to the very things they have chosen, and they will be beaten by the idols they once worshipped.

The Call to Repentance
“Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away.” – Acts 3:19
God’s desire is not to punish, but to restore. He calls His people to turn away from their idols and return to Him. The path of idolatry leads only to destruction, but repentance opens the door to forgiveness and renewal. When we turn back to the Lord with all our hearts, He will have mercy upon us and restore the joy of salvation. This is the time to examine our hearts, to rid ourselves of anything that has taken the place of God in our lives, and to seek His forgiveness.

The Danger of Hypocrisy and Double Allegiance
“No one can serve two masters.” – Matthew 6:24
God will not tolerate divided loyalty. Those who claim to love Him but continue to serve idols are living in hypocrisy. The Lord warns that such a life is unacceptable. He calls us to a wholehearted devotion to Him alone. The world may offer enticing pleasures, but these will only lead to bondage. When we try to serve both God and idols, we deceive ourselves and dishonor God. He calls us to a life of integrity and purity, free from the corruption of idolatry.

Summary
The message is clear: God will not share His glory with anyone. When His people turn to idols, they bring upon themselves His wrath and judgment. The very things they worship will become their captors, leading them to destruction. But God is merciful and calls His people to repentance. It is time to turn away from idols and return to Him with all our hearts. Only in Him will we find true peace and freedom.
