THE MOST HIGH GOD: OUR REFUGE, SOURCE, AND SOVEREIGN LORD By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“Thus saith the Lord, Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.”

Introduction
The Living God declares to His people that He alone is the Most High God who rules over all the earth. He is not one among many powers, nor is He equal to any authority that exists in heaven or on earth. He is the Sovereign Ruler, the Creator of all peoples, and the Sustainer of life itself. From the beginning of time until now, He has remained faithful, holy, and unchanging. His desire has always been that those who belong to Him should walk in His Light, abide in His Love, and live according to His Life, which is revealed through His Word.
Many who claim to belong to God struggle because they attempt to divide their loyalty between God and the world. They seek God in times of trouble but rely on the world in times of decision. They confess faith with their lips but trust in human systems, human strength, and worldly solutions as their primary source. Yet God calls His people to a higher standard of living. He calls them to be fully committed to His ways in every aspect of their lives.
The Lord’s intention is not merely that His people acknowledge Him, but that they seek Him first in all things. He desires a people who will draw near to Him sincerely and consistently. As they draw near, they begin to behold His majesty and understand His sovereignty. They begin to see that He alone is their refuge, their provider, their protector, and their guide.
This lesson explores the call of God to remain faithful, to avoid entanglement with the world, and to live under the guidance of His Spirit. It is a call to recognize God as the Most High and to remain steadfast in Him throughout the journey of life.

Seeking the Light, Life, and Love of God
“He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
— John 8:12
________________________________________
God invites His people to seek His Light, His Life, and His Love. These are not abstract concepts but living realities found in His Word. When God calls His people to seek His Light, He is calling them to seek truth. When He calls them to seek His Life, He is calling them to live according to His Spirit. When He calls them to seek His Love, He is calling them into relationship with Him.
The Light of God reveals the path that His people are meant to walk. Without this Light, people stumble in darkness and confusion. The world offers many lights, but they are false lights that lead to destruction. Only God’s Light leads to life and peace.
The Life of God is the spiritual vitality that comes from abiding in Him. Those who seek their life in the world will find emptiness, but those who seek their life in God will find abundance. God’s Life sustains, strengthens, and renews those who trust in Him.
The Love of God is the foundation of the believer’s relationship with Him. It is through His Love that people are drawn to Him and sustained by Him. Those who walk in His Love experience the peace and assurance that the world cannot provide.
As people sincerely seek God, they begin to see His majesty more clearly. They come to know Him not merely as a concept but as a living reality. They begin to understand that He truly is the Most High God.

The Danger of Trusting in the Arm of Flesh
“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”
— Psalm 118:8
________________________________________
One of the greatest dangers facing believers is the temptation to trust in human strength instead of God. The arm of flesh represents human ability, human wisdom, and human systems. While these things have their place, they were never meant to replace dependence on God.
When people trust in the arm of flesh, they place themselves under a curse because they turn their hearts away from God. They begin to rely on the world as their source instead of God as their provider. This leads to spiritual dryness and confusion.
The world often appears attractive and successful. Many who rely on worldly systems seem to prosper, but their prosperity is temporary. Their success is built on unstable foundations, and eventually it leads to disappointment and despair.
God warns His people not to look to the world as their refuge. The world cannot provide the security that only God can give. Those who trust in the world will find themselves entangled in deception and bondage.
God desires His people to remain free. True freedom is found in dependence on Him, not in dependence on the world.

The Snare of the World’s Deception
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.”
— 1 John 2:15
________________________________________
The world is filled with deception. It promises happiness but delivers sorrow. It promises freedom but produces bondage. It promises success but leads to emptiness.
God describes the world as a web of deception. Those who rely on it become entangled and trapped. Like a spider’s web, the world’s system is designed to ensnare those who come too close.
Many people become trapped because they seek the world as their source. They make covenants with the world, not realizing that these covenants come with strings attached. Over time, they become controlled by the very systems they trusted.
God never intended for His people to live as slaves to the world. He intended for them to live as citizens of His Kingdom. Those who belong to God are called to live under His authority, not the authority of the world.
The more a person yields to God, the more clearly they see the difference between God’s ways and the world’s ways. They begin to understand that serving God is a privilege and an honor.

Living Under the Mind of the Spirit
“For to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
— Romans 8:6
________________________________________
God has given His Spirit to guide His people into truth. The Spirit reveals the mind of God and helps believers walk in His ways. Those who live under the guidance of the Spirit experience clarity and peace.
The mind of the world is confused and corrupted. It is filled with fear, anxiety, and hopelessness. Those who rely on the world’s thinking find themselves overwhelmed by its darkness.
The mind of the Spirit is pure and holy. It brings understanding and wisdom. Those who live under the Spirit’s guidance are able to discern truth from deception.
Living under the Spirit requires surrender. It requires a willingness to submit to God’s authority. Those who are willing to surrender find that God leads them into greater freedom and joy.
The Spirit continually points believers toward truth. He reminds them that God is their source and their refuge.

Faithfulness in Every Season of Life
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”
— Revelation 2:10
________________________________________
God calls His people to remain faithful throughout their lives. Faithfulness is not limited to youth or to favorable circumstances. It is a lifelong commitment to walk with God.
As people grow older, they may be tempted to compromise. They may be tempted to rely on worldly systems instead of God. But God calls them to remain steadfast.
Faithfulness requires determination. It requires a decision to remain true to God regardless of circumstances. Those who remain faithful experience God’s guidance and provision.
Even when circumstances are difficult, God’s people are called to trust Him. They are called to set their faces like flint and remain committed to His ways.
Faithfulness is a testimony to the goodness of God. It demonstrates that He is worthy of trust and devotion.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
— Psalm 46:1
________________________________________
God desires His people to see Him as their refuge and source. He is the one who provides for their needs and protects them from harm. Those who trust in Him find safety and peace.
The world offers temporary solutions, but God offers lasting security. Those who rely on Him discover that He is faithful in every situation.
God is not only a refuge but also a provider. He knows what His people need and supplies it according to His will. He is also a protector who guards them from danger.
Those who trust in God experience His goodness in countless ways. They see His guidance, His mercy, and His miracles.
Trusting God requires faith. It requires a willingness to depend on Him completely.

— Matthew 6:33

God calls His people to remain in right standing with Him. This requires a continual commitment to seek Him first. Those who seek Him first find that their lives are aligned with His purposes.
Right standing with God is not achieved through human effort but through faith. It is maintained through obedience and devotion.
Those who remain in right standing with God experience His presence and peace. They are protected from the deception of the world.
