GOD’S OWN PEOPLE HAVE DISOWNED HIM By Major Frank Materu

"They claim to know God, but by their actions, they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for doing anything good." – Titus 1:16

Introduction

In our time, we are witnessing a grievous tragedy: those who once professed faith in the Living God have turned away from Him. They have not only abandoned the truth but have actively disowned God through their actions, adopting idols of their own making. This lesson examines the consequences of disowning God and offers a call to return to the purity of worshiping Him in spirit and truth.

The Tragedy of Disowning God

The scriptures reveal that many who claim to be God’s people have become liars and hypocrites. They use His name in vain, re-imaging Him to suit their desires. This act of creating idols and bowing to them reflects a departure from the fear of the Lord.

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened." – Romans 1:21

God is grieved by those who have chosen pride, vanity, and disobedience over His righteous path. Their actions bring shame upon His name, and their works will be proven to be empty and futile.

The Deception of Idolatry

The worship of idols, whether physical or ideological, blinds people to the truth. These idols may take the form of personal ambition, worldly approval, or distorted theology. By following such paths, they disown the Living God.

"You shall not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below." – Exodus 20:4

Idolatry leads to destruction, for idols cannot save, and they draw the heart away from the only true God. Those who persist in idolatry will face the wrath of God.

God Will Vindicate His Name

The Lord will not allow His name to be mocked. Those who claim to serve Him while living in hypocrisy will face judgment. Their prideful works will crumble, and their pretense will be exposed.

"Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows." – Galatians 6:7

God’s wrath will reveal the emptiness of their idols and the futility of their rebellion. He will uphold His righteousness and bring justice upon those who disown Him.

A Call to Faithfulness

God desires His people to return to Him with sincere hearts. He calls for worship in spirit and truth, free from pretense and idolatry.

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks." – John 4:23

To stand for God is to uphold His righteousness, declare His truth, and walk in obedience. Faithfulness requires rejecting the false gods of our age and embracing the Living God fully.
