The Cost of Pretended Repentance and the Call to True Obedience By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: Isaiah 29:13

“These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.”

Introduction

In this present hour, the call to repentance resounds louder than ever before. Many are crying out to God, but few are being heard. The sobering truth is that God, in His holiness, does not listen to every cry, especially when that cry is void of true repentance and fueled by selfish desire. The divine message is clear—mere sorrow over circumstances does not equate to true repentance. God is searching for sincerity, brokenness, and an earnest desire to turn away from sin.

This lesson explores the heart of divine communication where God expresses deep grief over the hypocrisy, immaturity, and rebellion of His people. We live in a time where religious façades are common, but genuine obedience is rare. While many carry the appearance of faithfulness, their hearts remain tethered to rebellion and self-centered living. The consequences of such deception are vast—not just for the individual, but for a broken world longing for direction.

Through this message, we will understand the weight of our accountability before God, the danger of false repentance, and the call to be mature, obedient sons and daughters who reflect the glory of God in a darkened world.

The Danger of False Repentance

“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” – 2 Corinthians 7:10

The Word makes a clear distinction between true and false repentance. Many cry out to God in moments of hardship, but their pleas are not rooted in a desire to be reconciled to Him; instead, they desire only relief from suffering. God, in His righteousness, discerns the heart and is not moved by empty words or rehearsed apologies.

False repentance leads people to return to their sins after the storm has passed. This is not the kind of repentance that God honors. He is grieved when people play with His mercy, treating it as a temporary escape rather than a permanent transformation. The continual return to sin after shallow apologies provokes His judgment, for such behavior reveals hearts far from Him.

The Call to True Repentance and Obedience

“Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.” – Joel 2:13

God delights in sincere repentance. When people cry out from a place of brokenness and humility, He answers with mercy. The transforming power of genuine repentance leads to lasting obedience and spiritual growth. Such individuals are not merely sorry—they are changed.

God desires that His people grow into maturity, accepting their responsibility to live holy and obedient lives. True sons and daughters are not swayed by their emotions or the allure of the world. They cleave to the Father in loyalty, seeking to please Him above all.

The Tragedy of Religious Hypocrisy

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead.” – Matthew 23:27

Many people wear the mask of religion. They attend church, speak Christian language, and participate in rituals, but their hearts are still in rebellion. God sees beyond the surface and exposes the true motives behind every action.

Religious hypocrisy is dangerous because it deceives not only the individual but also those around them. God is calling His people to forsake the outward display of righteousness and instead embrace authentic, Spirit-led living. Obedience from the heart is what pleases God—not empty traditions or impressive appearances.

The Consequences of Disobedience and Immaturity

“The time has come for judgment to begin with God’s household.” – 1 Peter 4:17

The chaos and wickedness in the world today are, in part, a reflection of the Church’s failure to be the light it was meant to be. Immature and disobedient believers have neglected the call to evangelism and righteousness. As a result, the world continues to spiral into deeper sin.

God’s expectation is clear—His people must rise in responsibility and maturity. Immaturity leads to compromise, and compromise leads to spiritual decay. Those who refuse to grow in Christ are stunted in their walk and ineffective in their witness. The time for playing games is over. God demands full allegiance and accountability.

The Role of the Believer in a Dark World

“You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:13–14

Believers are not saved just for themselves—they are entrusted with the light of Christ to shine in the darkness. When Christians fail to live according to God's Word, the world loses its way even further. Instead of pointing people to salvation, many believers become stumbling blocks through compromise and hypocrisy.

The lost are watching. When they see inconsistency and corruption among those who profess Christ, they use it to justify their own sin. This is a heavy indictment on the Church. God’s people must rise above cultural compromise and walk boldly in the truth of the Gospel. The world needs to see the difference that Christ makes.

God’s Delight in Obedient Servants

“If you love me, keep my commandments.” – John 14:15

God finds joy in those who obey Him sincerely. He is not impressed by lip service or religious activities. What delights His heart is obedience birthed out of love and reverence. Those who walk in the Spirit, obeying His voice day by day, experience the fullness of God’s favor and guidance.

Obedient servants are empowered by the Spirit to live above sin and reflect the nature of Christ. They do not seek to please themselves, but their desire is to glorify the One who saved them. To such, God gives everything needed to fulfill His purpose.

The Power of Focused Obedience

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” – Hebrews 12:2

It is easy to be discouraged when observing the failures of others. However, God commands His faithful ones to keep their eyes on Him. Do not focus on those who are rebellious, for they will be held accountable in due time. Instead, focus your energy on daily obedience. Those who walk in the light will grow stronger, and the light of Christ will shine even brighter through them.

God is not calling for the majority—He is calling for the remnant. A few faithful ones, fully surrendered, can change the course of nations. Let us be found among the few.

Summary

The Lord is grieved with those who pretend to repent yet return quickly to their sins. His ears are not open to hypocritical cries, but His mercy is abundant toward those who sincerely turn to Him. True repentance is marked by transformation and obedience. The world’s darkness is deepening because of the Church’s failure to be the salt and light it was meant to be. Each believer must take full responsibility for their calling and walk in the power of the Spirit. God's joy is found in those who obey Him from the heart.

Salvation Prayer

If you have never truly repented or want to rededicate your life to Christ, pray this from your heart:

“Heavenly Father, I come before You today with a broken heart. I confess that I have sinned and fallen short of Your glory. I ask for Your mercy and forgiveness. Wash me with the blood of Jesus Christ. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again. Today, I surrender my life to You. Be my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and lead me in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”
