SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM DECEPTION By: Major. Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

"And now, O priests, this command is for you. If you will not listen, and if you will not take it to heart to give glory to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart.

Behold, I will rebuke your descendants, and spread refuse on your faces, the refuse of your solemn feasts; and one will take you away with it." (Malachi 2:1-3)

Introduction: The Danger of Deception in the Church:

In today’s world, many within the church claim to follow Christ, but they have blurred the lines between truth and deception.

As we witness the rise of self-deception, it is crucial to reflect on the warnings in Scripture, especially in Malachi 2:1-3, where God speaks to the priests about the consequences of failing to honor His name.

The modern church faces a similar crisis—many have become entangled in the world’s lies, abandoning the narrow path of truth and embracing false teachings.

The Deception of Following False Idols:

One of the most significant dangers in the church today is the worship of idols, both tangible and abstract.

These idols take many forms, such as the pursuit of material success, popularity, and power.

In Revelation 2:20, God condemns the worship of false gods and the corrupt influence they have on the church:

"Nevertheless, I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce my servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols." (Revelation 2:20)

This passage highlights the danger of allowing false teachings to infiltrate the church, leading people into spiritual bondage.

People who follow these idols become spiritually blind, worshiping the created rather than the Creator.

As a result, they lose their desire to know the true God, and instead, they follow their own desires, leading to destruction.

The Corruption of Worldly Desires:

In 1 John 2:15, the apostle John warns believers not to love the world or the things in it, for those who do are not aligned with God:

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the

Father but is of the world." (1 John 2:15)

The temptation to love the world is ever-present, especially in a society that values materialism, fame, and self-pleasure. When we embrace worldly values, we open ourselves to deception, causing us to stray from God’s truth.

We may believe we are serving God, but in reality, we are worshiping the gods of pleasure, pride, and power.

The Call to Separate from Deception:

God calls His people to a life of purity, truth, and separation from all forms of deception.

Malachi 2:1-3 clearly shows that if we fail to honor God and allow deception to take root in our hearts, we face His judgment.

However, this is not the end of the story.

God also calls for repentance and transformation through His grace.

The invitation to repent and return to God is a central theme throughout Scripture.

In Revelation 2:21-22, Jesus offers a chance for those who have been caught in deception to repent:

"And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed, I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds." (Revelation 2:21-22)

This call to repentance is not just for the individual but for the entire body of Christ.

We must examine our lives, expose the lies we have believed, and turn back to the truth of God’s Word.

Repentance is the only path to freedom from deception.

The False Teachings and the Path to Destruction:

As we look around, we see many following teachings that lead them away from the truth of God.

These false teachings often promise prosperity, success, and a comfortable life but neglect the need for holiness and repentance.

In 2 Timothy 4:2-4, Paul warns Timothy and all believers to stand firm in sound doctrine:

"Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables." (2 Timothy 4:2-4)

This is a stark reminder that the truth of the gospel will always be contested.

People will seek to hear what they want to hear, rather than what God’s Word actually says.

The path of following false teachers is a path that leads to destruction, but the path of truth leads to life in Christ.

The Call to Stand for Truth and Warn Others:

As believers, it is our duty to stand for truth, regardless of the consequences.

We must not compromise our faith to fit in with the world or the cultural pressures around us.

God calls us to be a witness to the truth, even when it is difficult.

We must be bold in proclaiming the gospel and warning others about the dangers of deception.

"I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word!" (2 Timothy 4:1-2)

Let us be diligent in preaching the truth of God’s Word, standing firm against the tide of deception that is sweeping across the world.

We are not to be conformed to the world but transformed by the renewing of our minds through the Word of God.

Conclusion: Embracing the Truth of God:

Deception is a powerful force that seeks to pull believers away from the truth of God.

However, God has called us to separate ourselves from lies and to walk in His truth.

We are to be faithful to His Word and share that truth with others, even when it is unpopular.

The world may offer us many distractions, but only in Christ do we find life and freedom from deception.

Let us be a people who stand for truth and reject the lies that lead to destruction.

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)
