The Danger of Denying God’s Word: A Path to Destruction By Major. Frank Materu
Introduction: A World Turning Away from God
In a time when many proudly display their riches and success, boasting about their power, wealth, and influence, we see a disturbing trend—a refusal to acknowledge the truth of God’s Word.
Men and women have become so indulged in their own desires and self-serving pursuits that they willingly turn away from the divine guidance offered through Scripture.
In doing so, they walk away from God’s standard and choose their own destructive paths.
This is a choice that seals them to the way of damnation, as they deny the very foundation of life and truth—God Himself.
God’s Truth and Standard: The Foundation of Life
The Bible clearly teaches us that God's Word is the ultimate truth—a standard that defines the path to eternal life.
The denial of this truth, however, is not a small matter. In fact, the consequences are severe.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”_
Romans 6:23
When people choose to follow their own desires, rejecting the truth of God, they deny His standard for how we should live.
They reject the life-giving commandments that lead to salvation.
As they indulge in selfishness, pride, and lust, they are blind to the eternal consequences of their choices.
These are not idle mistakes but deliberate steps toward spiritual destruction. The Pride of Humanity: A Distorted View of Wealth and Success
In our world today, the rise of wealth and personal success has been equated with divine favor.
But the Bible reminds us that material wealth and worldly achievement are not markers of righteousness.
Rather, they are often temptations that lead us further from God.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and
where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Matthew 6:19-20
Many of those who claim to follow God are, in reality, far from Him, caught up in their own ambitions and indulgences.
They show no sign of true repentance or submission to God’s will.
Instead of humbling themselves before the Almighty, they glorify their riches, which in truth have become idols, worshipped in place of God.
This prideful heart is nothing new. Even in the time of the prophet Jeremiah, the people were warned about their waywardness.
“They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.”_
Jeremiah 4:22
The Mercy of God:
A Call to Repentance
Despite humanity’s tendency to rebel and wander away, God’s mercy remains ever present.
His mercy is extended each day to those who would turn from their wickedness and return to Him.
As seen in the story of Nineveh, even the most corrupt and sinful of nations can find forgiveness if they genuinely repent.
“When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.”_
Jonah 3:10
This act of repentance—turning away from our sins and returning to God—is not just a one-time event, but a daily commitment.
We are called to continually humble ourselves, recognize our shortcomings, and seek God’s forgiveness.
Only then can we walk in the light of His truth and mercy.
The Foolishness of Walking Away from God
It is a sad reality that many today have rejected God’s call to repentance and turned toward their own ways.
They have embraced the ways of the world, seeking fulfillment in fleeting pleasures and earthly desires.
But in doing so, they have forsaken their relationship with the Creator, wandering in darkness without a sense of true direction.
“The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.”
Psalm 14:1
Just as the potter shapes the clay into vessels according to his will, so too does God shape us. But when we turn away, we begin to question the One who created us.
As the potter would never accept a vessel that turns on him, neither does God delight in those who rebel against His will.
“But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? 'Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’
Romans 9:20
Standing Firm in Faith
Despite the overwhelming tide of worldly desires and self-indulgence, those who trust in God are promised His guidance and protection.
God is faithful to those who remain steadfast in their faith.
The trials and difficulties of life are many, but He promises to be with us through them, offering strength, mercy, and grace.
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
As we face challenges, both seen and unseen, let us remember that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.
We may not always understand why we face certain trials, but God promises to be with us, guiding us through every storm.
Conclusion: Embrace God’s Mercy and Truth
In this world, there will always be those who choose to reject God’s Word, walking their own destructive paths.
But for those who remain faithful, who embrace the truth of God’s Word, there is mercy, forgiveness, and eternal life.
We are called to stand firm, to trust in God, and to walk in His light.
Blessed are those who hear the word
“of God and obey it.”
Luke 11:28
It is not too late to turn to God. His mercy is available to all who would repent and submit to His will.
Choose today whom you will serve, for the way of life leads to peace, and the way of rebellion leads to destruction.
Let us stand true, faithful to the One who created us, and walk in His truth.
May God’s peace and mercy be upon you today and always.
