Full Introduction

From the beginning of creation, humanity has wrestled with one central issue: who will be in control? The struggle between self-rule and divine rule defines the spiritual condition of every person. The Living God declares that as we honor Him, He will honor us. Yet this honor is not bestowed upon those who cling to self-centered living. It is reserved for those who relinquish control, surrender their lives fully, and walk in obedience to His Spirit.

Many desire the blessings of God without yielding to the authority of God. They seek protection without submission, peace without repentance, and eternal life without surrender. Yet the divine principle is unchanging: those who attempt to preserve their old life will ultimately lose it. Those who willingly lay down their lives for God’s sake will find true life.

This lesson examines the profound truth that true honor, victory, and eternal security are found only in total commitment to God. It explores the example of Jesus Christ as the perfect model of obedience, the danger of self-centered living, the tragic consequences of choosing the flesh, the reality of eternal judgment, the preciousness of salvation as a gift, and the necessity of discernment in a world filled with deception.

The call of God is not partial but complete. It is a call to love Him above self, above comfort, above reputation, and above personal ambition. It is a call to exchange control for trust, rebellion for obedience, and carnality for spiritual vitality. Those who heed this call discover triumphant victory and the joy of living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Let us therefore consider the weight and glory of surrendering fully to God, for in doing so we find the life that is truly life.

The Principle of Honor and Surrender

________________________________________

God declares that as we honor Him, He will honor us. This principle echoes throughout Scripture.

“Them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” – 1 Samuel 2:30

Honor toward God is demonstrated through obedience, reverence, and wholehearted devotion. It is not merely verbal acknowledgment but active submission. Those who seek to keep their lives for themselves, clinging to personal agendas and ambitions, dishonor the One who gave them life.

The attempt to preserve the old life is spiritual foolishness. The old life is marked by sin, self-will, and separation from God. It leads to destruction. Jesus plainly taught that losing one’s life for His sake is the pathway to salvation.

To surrender is not to lose identity; it is to discover it. When control is relinquished to the Holy Spirit, the believer enters into triumphant victory. Self-centered living produces instability, but Spirit-centered living produces peace and purpose.

The Pattern of Christ’s Obedience

________________________________________

The ultimate model of surrender is Jesus Christ. He did not retreat from His commitment to the Father. Even when obedience required suffering and death, He remained faithful.

“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” – Philippians 2:8

His obedience secured salvation for humanity. No other could accomplish what He accomplished. Through His sacrifice, the penalty for sin was satisfied, and the gift of eternal life became available.

Jesus is not only Savior but also pattern. Those who follow Him must adopt the same posture of obedience. This does not necessarily mean physical martyrdom, but it does require daily dying to self.

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily.” – Luke 9:23

The cross represents surrender of self-will. It represents commitment to God’s purpose above personal preference. In following Christ’s example, believers enter into the abundance of goodness found in God’s way.

The Tragedy of Self-Centered Living

________________________________________

Many choose according to the flesh rather than seeking spiritual life. Scripture warns that ways which seem right can end in death.

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” – Proverbs 14:12

Self-centered living breeds chaos, conflict, and corruption. When individuals insist on their own way, evil consequences erupt. Pride, greed, immorality, and violence often stem from the desire for control.

Hell enlarges itself because multitudes love their own way more than God’s way. Eternal separation from God is not accidental; it is the culmination of persistent rejection of His authority.

“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” – Romans 8:6

Those who sow to the flesh reap corruption.

“He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption.” – Galatians 6:8

The tragedy is not merely earthly regret but eternal consequence. Control sought in rebellion results in torment without control.

The Reality of Eternal Judgment and the Gift of Salvation

________________________________________

Eternal judgment is not symbolic; it is real. Those who reject salvation face consequences that cannot be reversed.

“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” – Matthew 25:46

Yet salvation is a gift. It cannot be earned, purchased, or deserved.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith… it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8

This gift was secured through Christ’s obedience. Gratitude for this undeserved mercy should fuel devotion. Awareness of being spared from eternal torment deepens commitment to divine purpose.

When believers comprehend the magnitude of salvation, they relinquish control gladly. They recognize that surrender to God is not loss but rescue.

The Role of the Holy Spirit and Spiritual Discernment

________________________________________

The Holy Spirit guides those who love God.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” – John 16:13

Submission to the Spirit’s control protects against deception. The enemy sends lies to ensnare and entangle. Discernment is a divine safeguard.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” – 1 John 4:1

Some neglect discernment under the guise of humility, fearing to judge. Yet discernment is not condemnation; it is protection. It distinguishes truth from error, light from darkness.

False humility ignores warnings. True humility receives divine insight and obeys promptly. Loving the truth ensures protection from deception.

“Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:32

The Conflict with the Old Nature

________________________________________

The believer lives with an old nature that resists spiritual authority. This old nature is the internal adversary that longs for former slavery.

“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him.” – Romans 6:6

The flesh seeks subjectivity and rebellion. It resents submission to the Spirit. Recognizing this conflict prevents complacency.

Yet the Spirit empowers victory. When believers subject themselves daily to the Spirit’s leadership, they overcome the snare of carnality.

Serving God with gratitude transforms obedience from burden to joy. The Spirit-controlled life is marked by peace, love, and light.
