WALKING IN HUMILITY AND THE GUIDANCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” — James 4:6

Introduction
One of the greatest spiritual dangers confronting humanity is pride. Pride has destroyed individuals, families, kingdoms, ministries, and nations throughout history. It was pride that caused Lucifer to rebel against God and become Satan. It was pride that deceived Eve and Adam in the Garden of Eden. It remains pride that blinds multitudes today, causing people to exalt themselves above God, reject divine truth, and walk according to their own understanding.
In this lesson, God reveals His absolute awareness of human thoughts, motives, attitudes, and actions. Nothing is hidden from Him. Though many people imagine they are deceiving God through outward appearances, religious performances, or self-exalting imaginations, the Living God sees all things clearly. He judges righteously according to truth and not according to human pretensions.
The message also emphasizes the destructive intoxication of pride. Just as natural drunkenness impairs judgment, excessive pride intoxicates the human spirit and mind. Proud individuals become irrational, rebellious, self-deceived, and resistant to godly counsel. Instead of walking in humility and dependence upon the Holy Spirit, they trust in themselves and exalt their own understanding.
At the same time, this lesson offers hope, guidance, and encouragement for those who choose humility and obedience. God promises to direct, protect, strengthen, and preserve those who remain submitted to His Spirit. In a world filled with deception, confusion, rebellion, and spiritual darkness, the Holy Spirit provides divine wisdom and clear direction for all who genuinely seek the Lord.
This lesson therefore calls believers to reject pride, refuse satanic deception, walk in gratitude and humility, and remain steadfast under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The believer is reminded that life is shaped by choices. Every individual must decide whether to follow the pathway of self-exaltation leading to destruction or the pathway of humility leading to eternal life and fellowship with God.

GOD CANNOT BE MOCKED
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” — Galatians 6:7
The Living God is omniscient. He knows every thought, every intention, every hidden action, and every secret motive within the human heart. Nothing escapes His attention. Men may deceive other people through outward appearances, religious activity, or carefully constructed reputations, but no one deceives God.
Many people live as though God neither sees nor judges their behavior. They continue in rebellion, dishonesty, immorality, pride, selfishness, and hypocrisy while imagining that they remain spiritually secure. Yet Scripture declares that God examines both actions and motives.
“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth.” — 2 Chronicles 16:9
God’s judgments are righteous because they are based upon perfect knowledge. Human beings often judge according to appearances, but God judges according to truth. Therefore, every individual must recognize the seriousness of living before a holy and all-knowing God.
The lesson reminds believers to remain thankful that God protects those who sincerely belong to Him even while judgment falls upon rebellious nations and defiant peoples. Those who walk in obedience discover that God’s power far exceeds every earthly power and authority.

THE INTOXICATION OF PRIDE
“Only by pride cometh contention.” — Proverbs 13:10
Pride is one of the most destructive spiritual conditions because it blinds people to reality. Proud individuals begin believing exaggerated ideas about themselves. They imagine themselves superior, wiser, stronger, or more important than they truly are.
The lesson compares pride to drunkenness. Just as alcohol intoxicates the body and clouds judgment, pride intoxicates the spirit and mind. A proud person loses spiritual sobriety. Their reasoning becomes distorted, and they become resistant to correction and instruction.
Spiritually intoxicated people often become disrespectful, rebellious, arrogant, and self-centered. They elevate their opinions above divine truth and become consumed with self-glorification. God declares such pride to be abomination because it attempts to exalt self above the Creator.
“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD.” — Proverbs 16:5
Pride ultimately leads to destruction because it separates individuals from humility, repentance, and dependence upon God. A proud heart refuses counsel, rejects correction, and resists the convicting work of the Holy Spirit.
The tragedy is that many who outwardly claim to belong to God secretly worship themselves. Their ambitions, desires, reputations, and personal fantasies become more important than obedience to God.

THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE OLD NATURE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.” — Galatians 5:17
One of the central themes of the Christian life is the ongoing conflict between the old sinful nature and the new life produced by the Holy Spirit. Even after salvation, believers must continually resist the influence of the fleshly nature that desires independence from God.
The lesson describes the old nature as a dethroned ruler seeking to regain authority. This is a profound spiritual reality. Before salvation, the sinful nature controlled human desires, decisions, and behavior. Through Christ, believers receive new spiritual life and are called to walk according to the Spirit rather than the flesh.
However, the old nature does not surrender easily. It continually attempts to regain influence through pride, selfishness, lust, anger, rebellion, fear, greed, and deception.
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” — Galatians 5:16
Victory over the old nature is possible only through continual surrender to the Holy Spirit. Believers must choose daily whether they will obey the Spirit of God or yield to fleshly desires.
The pathway to spiritual maturity requires death to self. Jesus taught that true discipleship demands self-denial and complete surrender.
“If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” — Luke 9:23
The cross represents the death of pride, selfish ambition, rebellion, and self-rule. Only through surrender can believers experience the fullness of God’s life and peace.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GODLY CHOICES
“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.” — Deuteronomy 30:19
Choice is one of the greatest gifts God has given humanity. Every day people make decisions that shape their spiritual condition, character, relationships, and eternal destiny.
The lesson repeatedly emphasizes that individuals become either wise or foolish according to their choices. Some choose truth, humility, obedience, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Others choose pride, deception, rebellion, and self-exaltation.
Wise people listen to godly counsel and remain teachable. Fools reject correction because they prefer lies and fantasies over truth.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” — Proverbs 9:10
God never forces obedience upon people. He lovingly provides truth, instruction, warnings, and guidance, but each person must choose whether to follow His way.
Wrong choices gradually harden the heart and increase spiritual darkness. The more individuals indulge sinful thinking and rebellious behavior, the more difficult it becomes for them to perceive truth clearly.
Yet those who choose humility and obedience discover increasing spiritual clarity, peace, and wisdom. The Holy Spirit faithfully directs those who sincerely seek God.

THE GUIDANCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” — Romans 8:14
In a world filled with deception, confusion, temptation, and spiritual darkness, the Holy Spirit serves as the divine guide for believers. God never intended His people to navigate life according to human wisdom alone.
The Holy Spirit provides discernment, conviction, instruction, comfort, protection, and spiritual understanding. He reveals truth and exposes deception. Those who remain sensitive to His guidance avoid many dangers and destructive pathways.
The lesson contrasts the pathway of darkness with the pathway illuminated by God’s light. While the world increasingly embraces deception and rebellion, believers are called to walk in divine wisdom and spiritual clarity.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalms 119:105
The Holy Spirit also empowers believers to resist satanic deception. The devil seeks to manipulate human desires, imaginations, fears, and weaknesses. His purpose is always destruction.
Jesus warned clearly concerning Satan’s intentions:
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” — John 10:10
Believers must therefore actively resist temptation and reject deceptive influences. God provides spiritual weapons through prayer, Scripture, discernment, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

THE BLESSING OF GRATITUDE AND HUMILITY
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Gratitude protects the heart from pride and selfishness. Thankful believers recognize that every blessing, opportunity, ability, and provision comes from God. Gratitude produces humility because it acknowledges dependence upon the Lord.
The lesson encourages believers to serve God with gladness and thanksgiving. Those who maintain grateful hearts are able to perceive and receive the abundance God desires to give His faithful people.
Prideful individuals, however, often become consumed with dissatisfaction, self-focus, envy, and rebellion. They separate themselves from God’s blessings because they refuse humility and gratitude.
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.” — James 4:10
True spiritual prosperity is found not in self-exaltation but in humble fellowship with God.

Conclusion
Humanity stands continually between two pathways: the pathway of pride leading to destruction and the pathway of humility leading to life. God lovingly calls His people to reject deception, resist the influence of the flesh, and remain steadfast under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
In these difficult times, spiritual discernment is essential. The world increasingly celebrates self-exaltation, rebellion, and human pride, yet God still honors humility, obedience, and reverence.
Those who trust the Lord and follow His Spirit will not walk in confusion or darkness. God Himself will guide, preserve, strengthen, and uplift them in the way everlasting.
