A Call to Spiritual Awakening By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." – Matthew 4:17

Introduction

In the present age, many believers are seeking comfort and ease, trying to avoid the challenging calls to repentance and transformation that God places on their lives. The spirit of laziness, pride, and stubbornness often leads people into a place of spiritual complacency.

The Living God, however, calls His people to a repentance revolution, where we turn away from our sinful desires and embrace the power of His Spirit. This call is not only for those who are lost but also for the believers who have allowed spiritual sloth to settle in their hearts. The invitation to repentance is a call to align ourselves fully with God's will and to see the restoration of souls and nations.

The Bed of Ease and Spiritual Laziness

There is a dangerous temptation that many fall into, which is seeking a "bed of ease." This represents a desire for comfort without effort, avoiding the call to put in the necessary work for spiritual growth. When we seek ease over obedience, we are refusing the conviction of the Holy Spirit. The truth is, if we continue to live in spiritual laziness, we deceive ourselves into thinking we can return to idolatry and live in disobedience while remaining in God’s favor.

God is calling His people to wake up from this complacency and to be alert, alive, and spiritually sensitive. Repentance is necessary to break free from this spiritual slumber and to fully embrace the calling He has for our lives.

Supportive Verse: James 1:22 - "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

The Dangers of Pride and Stubbornness

When we refuse to repent, we are essentially rejecting the grace and mercy that God offers. Pride and stubbornness harden the heart against God's call. The people who refuse to be convicted by the Holy Spirit are like fools, choosing the hard way of transgression, which leads to destruction.

Those who persist in their pride and refusal to repent will face God’s wrath and fury, for they are turning away from His mercy. The way of transgression is difficult and painful, leading to spiritual death if not repented of. It is only through the probing of the Holy Spirit and the repentance that follows that we are saved from such a fate.

Supportive Verse: Proverbs 29:1 - "Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy."

The Call to Intercession and Mercy

In the midst of judgment, God’s mercy still extends to those who will pray, intercede, and seek His face. God calls His people to intercede for the lost, the dying, the perishing, and even those who have turned their backs on Him. It is in these moments of intercession that God desires to show mercy and bring those who are far from Him back into relationship with Him.

When we are filled with the Spirit, we begin to feel the weight of God's heart for the lost. We begin to pray with compassion and urgency for those who are perishing in their sins. We cannot afford to remain indifferent to their condition; instead, we must pray, believing that God can break through even the hardest hearts.

Supportive Verse: Ezekiel 22:30 - "I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one."

Repentance Revolution: The Power of God’s Spirit

Repentance is the key that opens the door to spiritual renewal. In the repentance revolution, we acknowledge our sins, turn away from them, and align ourselves with God’s will. When we pray in repentance, we must believe that God can move by His Spirit and bring about transformation, even in those who seem impossible to reach.

God's power is greater than any pride, darkness, or demonic influence that holds people captive. The repentant heart is the one that attracts God’s mercy and grace, and through it, souls are saved. This is the power of the repentance revolution: it transforms hearts, restores relationships, and brings revival to the nations.

Supportive Verse: 2 Peter 3:9 - "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Summary

In a world that is increasingly apathetic and rebellious, the call to repentance remains as urgent as ever. God is calling His people to wake up from their spiritual slumber, to reject the desire for ease and comfort, and to fully embrace the repentance revolution. This is a call to return to God, to intercede for the lost, and to trust in His power to transform even the hardest hearts.

Through repentance, we turn from our sins and invite the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and in the lives of others. God is ready and willing to move, but we must be willing to pray, believe, and act in obedience to His will.

Conclusion

The repentance revolution is a call to action for every believer. It is not just about personal repentance but also about interceding for those who are far from God. We must rid ourselves of laziness, pride, and spiritual complacency and embrace the transformative power of God’s Spirit. As we pray and repent, we must do so with faith, believing that God will answer and bring revival to the lost. The repentance revolution takes away the stain of sin and opens the door to the fullness of God’s mercy, grace, and salvation. Let us embrace this call and move in cooperation with the Holy Spirit to see lives transformed and souls redeemed.
