TOTAL SURRENDER, FAITHFULNESS, SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT, AND THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT By: Major Frank Materu
KEY SCRIPTURES
“For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” — Romans 11:36 (KJV)
“Quench not the Spirit.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION
God calls His people to give Him more than outward religious observance. He desires their hearts, obedience, faithfulness, and complete surrender. True worship is not merely a matter of money, promises, ceremonies, or following religious practices. It is a life submitted to God's will and devoted to His purposes.
Many people claim to belong to God but struggle to surrender what He asks of them. They make promises and later neglect them, depend on human beings instead of seeking God first, or allow religious leaders and personal interests to interfere with their relationship with Him. Others resist the work of the Holy Spirit because they fear losing control or do not understand how God works.
Yet God desires fellowship with His people. He calls them to receive spiritual nourishment from Him, learn through difficult seasons, honour their commitments, and remain open to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. This lesson examines the importance of wholehearted devotion, faithful stewardship, spiritual maturity, prayer, and obedience to God's Word.

TOTAL SURRENDER: GIVING GOD OUR WHOLE LIVES
“And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” — Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV)
Many people associate giving to God primarily with the tithe, as though their responsibility ends after offering a tenth of their income. However, Scripture calls believers to surrender their entire lives to God. Everything they possess ultimately belongs to Him, and their resources, abilities, time, and opportunities should be managed according to His will.
God does not need human possessions to become complete. Rather, He calls His people to recognize His sovereignty and respond through faithful stewardship. Giving should come from a sincere heart, not from manipulation, pride, or the desire to purchase divine favour.
Paul teaches that believers should present themselves to God as living sacrifices.
“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” — Romans 12:1 (KJV)
This means that worship must extend beyond financial offerings. Our conduct, decisions, relationships, work, and service should honour God. A person cannot claim wholehearted devotion while deliberately withholding obedience in areas where God's Word has given clear direction.
Giving financially remains an important expression of Christian generosity, but it must be practised with integrity, willingness, and responsibility. No one should be manipulated into giving through fear or promises that God will inevitably provide a particular material return.
God desires your whole heart. Let your giving, obedience, and daily conduct demonstrate genuine surrender.

FULFILLING OUR VOWS AND COMMITMENTS BEFORE GOD
“When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.” — Ecclesiastes 5:4 (KJV)
People sometimes make promises to God during moments of desperation, devotion, or spiritual excitement. They promise to serve Him, obey His instructions, or undertake particular responsibilities. Yet when the time comes to fulfil those commitments, they may become reluctant or resentful.
Faithfulness requires integrity between what we profess and how we live. Believers should not make careless promises to impress others or attempt to bargain with God. They should speak honestly, consider their responsibilities carefully, and honour legitimate commitments they have made.
God examines not only outward actions but also the motives of the heart. A person may appear devoted while serving from selfish ambition, a desire for recognition, or an attempt to gain influence. Genuine service flows from love for God and a willingness to obey Him.
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” — 1 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV)
Fulfilling commitments does not mean that obedience guarantees a life without hardship. Faithful believers may still experience suffering, opposition, and uncertainty. God's protection and peace must not be treated as automatic rewards that eliminate every difficulty.
Nevertheless, faithfulness strengthens integrity and keeps believers accountable before God. If circumstances change or a commitment becomes impossible or inappropriate, the believer should address the matter honestly rather than conceal the problem or make further false promises.
Let your word be trustworthy. Make commitments carefully, fulfil them faithfully, and serve God with sincere motives.

RECEIVING SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT FROM GOD
“O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” — Psalm 34:8 (KJV)
God desires His people to know Him personally and receive spiritual nourishment through His Word, prayer, worship, and fellowship with Him. No human leader should deliberately make people dependent on themselves at the expense of their relationship with God.
Christian leaders are called to guide, teach, and care for God's people, not exploit them for personal gain. Their responsibility is to point people toward Christ, who is the source of spiritual life.
Jesus declared:
“I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” — John 6:35 (KJV)
Believers must therefore develop their own relationship with God rather than depend entirely on another person's spiritual experience. Sound teaching should lead people into a deeper understanding of Scripture, stronger faith, and greater maturity.
Difficult seasons can also deepen spiritual understanding. Valleys of suffering, disappointment, and uncertainty may teach lessons that comfort and success alone cannot provide. Those who allow God to strengthen them through hardship may become better equipped to encourage others facing similar struggles.
However, suffering should not be sought unnecessarily or treated as proof of superior spirituality. The important question is whether we remain faithful to God and allow His truth to shape our response to difficult experiences.
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (KJV)
Feed your spirit through God's Word, remain close to Christ, and use the lessons He teaches you to strengthen others.

THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS PEOPLE INTO TRUE WORSHIP
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24 (KJV)
God calls His people to worship Him in spirit and truth. Religious activity alone cannot replace a genuine relationship with Him. A person may know religious language, attend services, and follow outward practices without allowing God's truth to transform the heart.
True spiritual life involves the work of the Holy Spirit, who convicts people of sin, leads them toward truth, and enables them to live in obedience to Christ. The Spirit does not lead believers away from Scripture or encourage conduct that contradicts the character of Jesus.
God desires fellowship with His people rather than a relationship built on fear, exploitation, or unnecessary dependence on human authorities. Spiritual leaders should help believers grow in maturity and freedom to follow Christ faithfully.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” — Romans 8:14 (KJV)
The work of the Holy Spirit should produce spiritual fruit, including love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. Genuine spiritual activity must therefore be assessed not merely by outward manifestations but also by its consistency with Scripture and its fruit in people's lives.
Believers should remain open to the Spirit's work while exercising discernment. Spiritual experiences must not become opportunities for manipulation, confusion, or personal glorification. The purpose of the Spirit's work is to glorify Christ, build up believers, and advance God's purposes.
Worship God sincerely, follow the Holy Spirit in accordance with Scripture, and allow His work to transform your character.

SEEKING GOD FIRST WHEN PROBLEMS ARISE
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 (KJV)
When difficulties arise, believers should turn to God first in prayer rather than allowing panic to control their decisions. Seeking Him first does not mean refusing help from other people. It means recognizing Him as the ultimate source of wisdom and allowing His Word to guide every response.
God may provide solutions through family members, qualified professionals, church leaders, or other appropriate sources of assistance. The important principle is to seek His wisdom and exercise discernment rather than place absolute confidence in human ability.
Believers should also avoid creating expectations that God has not promised to fulfil. Faith does not mean demanding that every situation change according to personal preference. It means trusting Him for strength and guidance through the circumstances of each day.
“As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” — Deuteronomy 33:25 (KJV)
Instead of becoming consumed by tomorrow's uncertainties, believers should fulfil today's responsibilities faithfully. They should pray, give thanks, make wise decisions, and remain willing to follow God's direction.
Seek God first, accept appropriate help, and trust Him to give you strength for each day.

DO NOT QUENCH THE HOLY SPIRIT
“Quench not the Spirit.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (KJV)
Believers must not deliberately resist the Holy Spirit's work. When the Spirit convicts them of sin, they should repent. When Scripture corrects their conduct, they should obey. When God gives them opportunities to serve, they should respond faithfully rather than allow fear, pride, or complacency to prevent obedience.
Paul also instructs the Church:
“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21 (KJV)
These verses establish two important responsibilities. Believers should not automatically reject spiritual gifts or prophetic messages, but neither should they accept every claim without examination. They must test what is presented, retain what is good, and reject what contradicts God's truth.
The Holy Spirit's work should lead people toward Christ, repentance, spiritual growth, and godly living. Church leaders and members must therefore create an environment where sincere spiritual service is welcomed, biblical discernment is practised, and harmful conduct is addressed responsibly.
When believers respond to the Spirit's conviction and guidance, they grow in faith and become better equipped to serve others. The result should be a community increasingly shaped by truth, holiness, love, and obedience.
Remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit, test spiritual claims through Scripture, and obey God's truth.

SUMMARY
God calls His people to surrender their whole lives, honour their commitments, receive spiritual nourishment from Christ, seek Him first in difficult circumstances, and remain responsive to the Holy Spirit.
Financial giving is one expression of devotion, but genuine worship includes the heart, character, resources, and daily conduct. Faithfulness requires integrity, while spiritual maturity requires dependence on God rather than unhealthy dependence on human leaders.
The Holy Spirit leads believers toward truth and Christlike character. Therefore, Christians must welcome His work while testing spiritual claims and maintaining accountability to Scripture.
