TRUST GOD TO CHANGE ALL THINGS: GRATITUDE, FAITH, AND THE WAY OF THE CROSS By: Major Frank Materu
KEY SCRIPTURES
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION
God calls His people to live by faith, gratitude, obedience, and unwavering trust in His sovereignty. Life presents challenges, disappointments, opposition, and difficult decisions, but believers do not have to surrender their hearts to bitterness, fear, or constant complaining. They can choose to trust God, praise Him, and remain confident in His power to work through their circumstances.
Many people allow negative thoughts and words to dominate their lives. They focus on problems, magnify the power of their enemies, and forget God's faithfulness. Others choose the easier path of compromise rather than remain faithful to Christ through hardship. These choices can weaken their faith and distract them from God's purposes.
Scripture teaches believers to give thanks, renew their minds, choose faith over fear, and follow Christ even when obedience is costly. This lesson examines the transforming power of gratitude, the importance of godly thinking, the consequences of our responses to adversity, and the eternal reward of remaining faithful to Jesus Christ.

GRATITUDE CAN TRANSFORM YOUR RESPONSE TO ADVERSITY
“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (KJV)
God challenges His people to live differently by refusing to let complaints, bitterness, and negative speech control their daily lives. Imagine spending an entire day without murmuring, speaking destructively, or allowing frustration to dominate your thoughts. Instead, you deliberately choose thanksgiving, prayer, and praise.
Such a decision does not mean pretending that problems do not exist. It means refusing to let problems determine your attitude toward God. Gratitude redirects your attention from the size of your difficulties to the faithfulness of the One you serve.
When you face opposition, disappointment, or uncertainty, you can choose to respond with faith rather than bitterness. Praise does not always remove the problem immediately, but it can strengthen your heart and help you respond with wisdom and spiritual stability.
“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.” — Psalm 28:7 (KJV)
God is able to bring good out of circumstances that appear painful or confusing. Therefore, do not hold on to resentment longer than necessary. Bring your pain to Him, seek His help, and allow Him to guide you toward forgiveness, healing, and renewed faith.
Choose gratitude over complaining, praise over bitterness, and faith over despair.

TRUST GOD INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO ACCUSATION AND FEAR
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” — Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
Believers must learn to distinguish between thoughts that encourage faithfulness and thoughts that lead them into fear, condemnation, or hopelessness. The enemy may use accusations and discouragement to weaken their confidence in God, but Christians must remain grounded in Scripture.
This does not mean ignoring legitimate correction. When God's Word exposes sin, believers should repent and change their conduct. However, they should not accept destructive condemnation that drives them away from God or convinces them that there is no hope.
God remains sovereign over the circumstances of His people. They should therefore resist panic, refuse to be controlled by fear, and keep their attention fixed on Him. His peace grows as believers trust Him and bring their concerns before Him in prayer.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
When peace seems absent, examine your thoughts and return to God's truth. Lack of peace does not automatically prove a lack of faith; grief, exhaustion, and difficult circumstances can also affect a person's emotions. Nevertheless, believers can continually seek God's help rather than allowing anxiety to control their decisions.
Fix your attention on God, receive correction through His Word, and refuse to let fear govern your life.

RENEW YOUR MIND AND REMOVE EVERY OBSTACLE TO FAITH
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2 (KJV)
God desires His people to develop minds shaped by His truth rather than by fear, pride, resentment, or worldly thinking. Our thoughts influence our words, decisions, relationships, and responses to adversity. Therefore, spiritual growth requires deliberate attention to what we believe and allow to govern our hearts.
Pride can become a serious obstacle when people believe their understanding is greater than God's wisdom. They may refuse correction, insist on controlling every outcome, or become offended when events do not follow their plans. Such attitudes weaken their willingness to trust God.
Scripture calls believers to humble themselves before the Lord and submit their thoughts and plans to His wisdom.
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)
Renewing the mind does not mean denying reality or pretending every circumstance is favourable. It means interpreting circumstances through biblical truth and choosing responses consistent with faith, wisdom, and obedience.
Do not allow negative thinking to convince you that God has lost control. Pray for discernment, examine your attitudes, and deliberately replace destructive thoughts with what is true, honourable, and pleasing to Him.
Submit your thoughts to Christ and allow His Word to shape your outlook, speech, and decisions.

TWO CHOICES: FEAR OR FAITH
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” — Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
Every day brings choices about how we interpret circumstances and respond to challenges. We can focus exclusively on danger, opposition, and difficulty, or we can acknowledge those realities while maintaining confidence in God's character and promises.
The account of the twelve spies sent to explore Canaan illustrates this principle. Ten spies emphasized the obstacles and spread fear among the people, while Joshua and Caleb trusted that God could lead Israel into the promised land.
“Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.” — Numbers 13:30 (KJV)
The difference was not that Joshua and Caleb failed to see the obstacles. They recognized the challenges but refused to regard them as greater than God's promise. The other spies allowed fear to dominate their report, and the people responded with unbelief. Consequently, that generation did not enter the promised land, except for Joshua and Caleb among those numbered in the wilderness generation.
This account warns believers against allowing fear to determine their decisions. Negative speech can discourage others, weaken collective courage, and turn a challenge into an occasion for disobedience.
However, faith is not pretending that danger does not exist or guaranteeing a particular outcome. Genuine faith trusts God while responding to reality with wisdom and obedience.
When facing a difficult situation, ask yourself whether your words encourage faithfulness or spread unnecessary fear. Choose to speak truthfully, acknowledge challenges honestly, and remember God's faithfulness.
Do not let fear write the final report. Look at your circumstances through faith in God and obey His direction.

LET GRATITUDE BE YOUR TESTIMONY
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” — Psalm 107:1 (KJV)
When people ask about your life, your response can reveal what dominates your heart. Constant complaints focus attention on disappointment, while sincere thanksgiving acknowledges God's goodness even during difficult seasons.
Gratitude does not require you to deny suffering or conceal genuine needs. You may honestly acknowledge pain while continuing to praise God for His mercy, provision, guidance, and faithfulness.
A thankful believer remembers that God deserves praise not only when circumstances improve but also when the future remains uncertain. Thanksgiving is an expression of trust, not a technique for forcing God to provide a desired outcome.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” — Psalm 103:2 (KJV)
Begin each day by acknowledging God's goodness. Let your speech encourage others, your conduct demonstrate integrity, and your decisions reflect confidence in Him. When difficulties arise, pray for wisdom instead of allowing discouragement to become your testimony.
Make thanksgiving your daily practice and let your life testify to God's goodness.

FOLLOW CHRIST THROUGH THE WAY OF THE CROSS
“And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.” — Matthew 10:38 (KJV)
Following Jesus requires more than choosing what is comfortable or socially acceptable. It requires surrender, obedience, endurance, and willingness to remain faithful when doing what is right becomes costly.
The easier path may offer immediate comfort, recognition, or material advantage, but it can also tempt people to compromise their convictions. A believer who chooses convenience over obedience may gain temporary benefits while damaging their spiritual integrity.
Jesus taught that discipleship involves denying oneself, taking up the cross, and following Him. This means placing His will above selfish ambition and refusing to abandon biblical truth merely to avoid hardship.
“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.” — Matthew 10:22 (KJV)
The Christian journey may involve sacrifice, opposition, rejection, and suffering. Nevertheless, believers are called to remain faithful, trusting that their labour in the Lord is not in vain.
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” — Revelation 2:10 (KJV)
Eternal life is God's gift through Jesus Christ, received by grace through faith. Faithful endurance is the response of a disciple who belongs to Him, not a way of purchasing salvation through suffering.
Reject compromise, carry your cross faithfully, and follow Jesus Christ to the end.

The account of Joshua and Caleb reminds us that faith acknowledges obstacles without allowing them to overpower God's promises. Gratitude becomes a testimony of God's goodness, while the way of the cross reminds believers that true discipleship requires surrender and perseverance.
The central challenge is to choose faith over fear, thanksgiving over complaining, humility over pride, and obedience over convenience.

CONCLUSION
God is able to work through every circumstance to accomplish His purposes in the lives of those who love Him. Therefore, do not allow bitterness, fear, or negative thinking to control your heart. Bring your burdens to Him, renew your mind through Scripture, and remain thankful even when answers are delayed.
Remember that praise does not guarantee the immediate removal of every problem, but it directs your heart toward the One who remains faithful. Trust Him to give you wisdom for today's challenges and strength to fulfil your responsibilities.
Above all, do not abandon Christ when obedience becomes difficult. The way of the cross demands faithfulness, but the believer's hope rests in Jesus Christ and the eternal life He gives.

FINAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT
Your circumstances do not have to control your attitude or determine your faithfulness to God. You may face real struggles, but you can still pray, give thanks, seek wisdom, and continue doing what is right.
Do not measure God's faithfulness solely by how quickly your problems disappear. Trust His wisdom, receive His strength, and remain obedient to His Word. When you stumble, repent and return to Him. When you become weary, seek His help and the support of trustworthy people.
Keep your eyes on Jesus Christ. Let gratitude shape your words, faith guide your decisions, and obedience direct your steps.
Praise God in every season, trust Him through every challenge, and remain faithful to Christ until the end.
