WILD WOLVES IN SHEPHERDS’ CLOTHING By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scriptures: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” — Matthew 7:15 (KJV)
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION
Throughout every generation, God has warned His people against false ministers who claim to represent Him but whose hearts, motives, and actions contradict His truth. Such individuals may use the name of Jesus Christ, present themselves as spiritual authorities, and claim to possess divine understanding while pursuing personal gain, influence, and control over others. Their outward appearance may seem religious, but their fruits reveal the true condition of their hearts.
The danger becomes greater when believers neglect their relationship with God, abandon spiritual vigilance, and place unquestioning trust in human leaders. Spiritual complacency makes people vulnerable to deception, manipulation, and teachings that lead them away from the Lord. Yet God does not desire the destruction of His people. He calls them to awaken, repent, seek His face, and return to the tr
uth.
This message is a solemn warning against false spiritual leadership, misplaced trust, and worldly desires. It is also an invitation to genuine repentance and restoration. God desires His people to recognize deception, reject spiritual bondage, and return wholeheartedly to Him.

THE WARNING AGAINST FALSE MINISTERS
Jesus Christ clearly warned His followers that false prophets would appear among them, disguising their true intentions beneath an outward appearance of righteousness. These individuals might speak religious language, quote Scripture, and claim to serve God, yet their conduct and motives could reveal that they were not faithfully following Him.
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” — Matthew 7:15 (KJV)
The warning requires believers to exercise spiritual discernment. A person should not be accepted as a faithful servant of God merely because of a title, public reputation, impressive preaching, or claims of divine authority. The character, teaching, and fruit of a minister must be examined in the light of Scripture.
False spiritual leadership can cause serious harm when people are manipulated, exploited, or discouraged from seeking God personally. Therefore, believers must remain watchful and refuse to surrender their faith and conscience to human personalities. Their ultimate allegiance belongs to Jesus Christ.

THE FRUIT REVEALS THE TRUE CHARACTER
The outward appearance of a person may be misleading, but consistent conduct reveals important evidence about character. Jesus taught that people could recognize false prophets by their fruits. Religious claims cannot permanently conceal patterns of dishonesty, exploitation, greed, and unrighteousness.
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” — Matthew 7:20 (KJV)
A faithful servant of God should demonstrate integrity, humility, love, truthfulness, and a willingness to serve rather than dominate others. By contrast, leadership that consistently exploits vulnerable people, pursues personal wealth without accountability, or uses fear to maintain control must be examined seriously.
However, discernment must be exercised with wisdom rather than personal hostility. Not every minister who makes a mistake is a false prophet, and disagreements alone do not establish that someone is serving evil. Believers must evaluate teachings and conduct carefully, using Scripture as their standard and avoiding unsupported accusations.
The central question is whether a person's ministry directs people toward Christ and produces the fruit of righteousness or whether it promotes dependence upon human authority and personal advantage.

SPIRITUAL COMPLACENCY MAKES PEOPLE VULNERABLE
Many believers become susceptible to deception when they grow spiritually cold, neglect prayer, abandon the study of Scripture, and become careless about their relationship with God. When spiritual vigilance declines, people may accept teachings they would otherwise recognize as misleading.
“Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.” — Mark 14:38 (KJV)
Spiritual complacency creates room for fear, confusion, and misplaced trust. Instead of seeking God's guidance, some people depend entirely upon religious personalities to make decisions about their spiritual lives. They may tolerate harmful conduct because they fear rejection, desire acceptance, or believe that questioning a leader is automatically disobedience to God.
God calls His people to wake up and take responsibility for their spiritual condition. Believers must cultivate prayer, study the Word, practise obedience, and remain alert to influences that weaken their faith.
The answer to deception is not suspicion toward everyone, but spiritual maturity grounded in truth. A believer who knows Scripture and seeks God sincerely is better equipped to identify error and respond with wisdom.

THE DANGER OF LOVING THE WORLD MORE THAN GOD
One of the central warnings in this message concerns the desire for worldly wealth, status, pleasure, and recognition. When such desires dominate the heart, people may become willing to compromise their convictions and follow leaders who promise material success without calling them to repentance and holiness.
Scripture warns believers not to allow the world to take God's rightful place in their affections.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15 (KJV)
The pursuit of wealth is not, by itself, proof of wickedness. The danger arises when material gain becomes more important than obedience to God, when people tolerate injustice for personal benefit, or when spiritual authority is used to exploit others.
Believers must examine what governs their decisions and shapes their ambitions. God calls them to pursue righteousness rather than imitate sinful practices simply because those practices appear successful or socially acceptable.
True spiritual prosperity is not measured merely by possessions, popularity, or public influence. It is reflected in faithfulness to God, integrity of character, love for others, and a life increasingly conformed to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

THE IDOLATRY OF HUMAN LEADERSHIP
God has not called His people to worship religious leaders or place human beings above His authority. Respect for pastors and ministers is appropriate, but such respect must never become idolatry. When people defend a leader regardless of wrongdoing, disregard Scripture to preserve loyalty, or fear a person more than they reverence God, their priorities require serious examination.
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” — Exodus 20:3 (KJV)
Religious institutions and ministers should help believers grow in their knowledge of God rather than make them permanently dependent upon human authority. Faithful leadership equips people to understand Scripture, develop spiritual maturity, and serve God responsibly.
The tragedy of misplaced devotion is that people may become more concerned about pleasing a leader than obeying the Lord. They may tolerate deception, conceal wrongdoing, or follow harmful instructions because they have confused loyalty to a person with loyalty to God.
Believers must therefore restore the proper order in their lives. God alone deserves worship. Every minister, institution, and teaching must remain accountable to His truth.

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO REPENT
God's warning against false ministers does not remove the responsibility of individual believers to examine their own hearts. People can be deceived by others, but they must also confront their own sins, compromises, and misplaced priorities.
Repentance requires more than expressing regret. It involves acknowledging wrongdoing, turning away from sin, and returning to obedience to God. Those who have participated in dishonesty, tolerated injustice, or placed human beings above the Lord must seek His forgiveness and change their direction.
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” — Acts 3:19 (KJV)
There are two important areas of repentance in this message. First, believers must repent of their personal sins, including pride, greed, dishonesty, spiritual laziness, and worldly desires. Second, they must acknowledge where they have placed unhealthy trust in deceptive leadership, allowing fear, manipulation, or misplaced loyalty to control their decisions.
Repentance does not mean accepting every accusation made against a religious leader. It means honestly examining one's own conduct and responding to genuine wrongdoing according to God's Word. Where exploitation or abuse has occurred, repentance and spiritual restoration should be accompanied by appropriate accountability and practical steps toward safety.
God's purpose is restoration. Those who sincerely return to Him can seek forgiveness, renewed fellowship, and the strength to walk in righteousness.

GOD DESIRES TO RESTORE HIS PEOPLE
God does not delight in seeing people deceived, oppressed, or destroyed. His warnings call people away from danger and toward the life He desires for them. He invites those who have wandered from Him to return with sincere hearts and renewed commitment.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” — James 4:8 (KJV)
Those who return to God must learn to seek His counsel through prayer, Scripture, and wise, accountable spiritual guidance. They must reject the belief that a human leader has unlimited authority over their conscience or that their relationship with God can exist only through one person's approval.
Restoration may also require practical action. Where people have experienced coercion, financial exploitation, or spiritual abuse, they may need to establish appropriate boundaries, seek trustworthy support, and report serious misconduct to relevant authorities. Seeking safety and accountability is not a rejection of faith.
God calls His people to freedom in Christ, a renewed mind, and a life grounded in truth. His desire is that they grow strong spiritually, serve faithfully, and bear fruit that honours His name.

THE CHOICE BETWEEN TRUTH AND DECEPTION
Every believer must consider where their trust ultimately rests. Do they seek God's will, or do they allow fear, ambition, and the approval of others to determine their direction? Do they serve the Lord faithfully, or have they become more concerned with personal comfort and recognition?
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” — Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
The choice to follow God requires humility, discernment, and courage. Believers must be willing to reject teachings that contradict Scripture, even when those teachings are popular or presented by influential personalities. They must also remain humble enough to receive correction when their own understanding or conduct is wrong.
God calls His people to love truth, practise righteousness, and remain faithful to Jesus Christ. They must neither follow deceptive leaders blindly nor allow disappointment with religious institutions to lead them into bitterness and spiritual isolation.
The right response is to seek God wholeheartedly, remain grounded in His Word, and cultivate fellowship with faithful believers who encourage holiness, truth, and responsible Christian living.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
The warning against wild wolves in sheep's clothing reminds believers that outward religious appearances do not always reflect genuine faithfulness to God. False spiritual leadership can exploit trust, encourage worldly desires, and lead people away from the truth. Spiritual complacency and misplaced devotion can make such deception more difficult to recognize.
Nevertheless, believers must not respond with indiscriminate accusations or hatred. They must test teachings against Scripture, examine the fruit of leadership, and take responsibility for their own spiritual condition. They must repent of personal sin, reject idolatry, and refuse to participate in exploitation or unrighteousness.
God's desire is not the destruction of His people but their restoration and spiritual maturity. Through Jesus Christ, He calls them to return to Him, seek His counsel, and walk in truth and holiness. Those who sincerely respond to His call can pursue renewed fellowship with Him and become faithful witnesses of His kingdom.
CALL TO ACTION
Examine your heart and the foundations of your faith. Are you following Jesus Christ, or have you placed a human leader, religious institution, material ambition, or personal comfort above Him?
Return to God's Word and allow it to examine your life. Repent of your sins, reject deception, and exercise discernment in your spiritual relationships. Do not excuse wrongdoing simply because it is committed by a respected minister, and do not condemn people without sound evidence. Pursue truth, accountability, holiness, and genuine fellowship with God.
FINAL ENCOURAGEMENT
God is calling His people to awaken from spiritual complacency and stand firmly in His truth. Do not allow fear, manipulation, or misplaced loyalty to determine your relationship with Him. Your faith must rest upon Jesus Christ, who calls you to freedom, righteousness, and eternal life.
Remain watchful, grow in the knowledge of God's Word, and let your life bear fruit that honours Him. The Lord welcomes those who sincerely turn to Him and seek to walk in His ways.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE AND SALVATION
Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge my sins and ask for Your forgiveness. Forgive me for every way I have placed worldly desires, human authority, or personal ambitions above You. Deliver me from deception, pride, fear, and spiritual complacency. Give me wisdom to recognize false teaching and humility to receive Your correction. Help me to trust Your Word, seek Your counsel, and walk in holiness and truth.
Lord Jesus, I believe that You died for my sins and rose again. I receive You as my Lord and Saviour. Cleanse my heart, renew my mind, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Lead me away from every form of spiritual bondage and establish me in Your truth. Teach me to worship You alone, love others sincerely, and remain faithful throughout my life. In Jesus Christ's name, Amen.
