WEEPING BEFORE GOD By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: Psalm 51:17 (KJV)

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

INTRODUCTION

God is rich in mercy, and His mercy is not obtained through outward appearance, intellectual ability, education, or human achievements. He looks upon the heart and responds to those who humble themselves before Him in genuine repentance and sincere dependence. When a man or woman recognizes their sinful condition and cries out to God from the depths of the heart, they make room for His mercy to work in their lives.

Many people remain distant from God because they are filled with themselves. They trust in their own understanding, pursue their desires, and refuse to acknowledge their need for Him. Instead of humbling themselves, they defend their conduct and continue walking in their own ways. Their pride prevents them from experiencing the transforming power of God's mercy.

However, when people recognize their sins, abandon their pride, and come before the Lord with repentant hearts, they discover that He is merciful and ready to forgive those who sincerely turn to Him.

God desires His people to walk in humility and obedience. He wants to dwell among them, reveal His goodness, and establish His presence in their lives. Yet pride, stubbornness, and resistance to the work of His Spirit hinder people from receiving what He desires to accomplish in them.

Therefore, we must learn to humble ourselves before God, weep over our sins, seek His mercy, and obey His commands. A broken and contrite heart is far more precious before Him than an outward display of religion without genuine surrender.

GOD RESPONDS TO A HUMBLE AND CONTRITE HEART

God does not measure a person's worth by outward appearance, academic qualifications, intelligence, wealth, or social position. These things cannot replace a heart that is humble before Him. What matters is whether we recognize our need for His mercy and approach Him sincerely.

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

When a person truly recognizes the seriousness of sin, they stop making excuses and begin seeking God's forgiveness. Their cry is no longer an attempt to protect their reputation but an honest appeal for mercy and transformation.

Weeping before God is not merely the shedding of physical tears. It is the expression of a heart deeply grieved by sin, genuinely repentant, and willing to turn back to the Lord. A person may cry without repenting, just as another may repent sincerely without shedding tears. What God desires is genuine humility and a willingness to obey Him.

Therefore, let us not depend on outward religious expressions while refusing to surrender our hearts. Let us come before God honestly, confess our sins, and seek the cleansing that only He can provide.

PRIDE PREVENTS PEOPLE FROM RECEIVING MERCY

One of the greatest obstacles to experiencing God's mercy is pride. When people are filled with themselves, they become unwilling to admit their failures. They justify their sins, blame others, and behave as though they have no need for correction.

Such people may continue performing religious activities while resisting the conviction of the Holy Spirit. They want God's blessings without repentance and His favour without surrender.

“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” — James 4:6 (KJV)

Pride closes the heart to correction, while humility makes a person willing to acknowledge the truth. The proud person insists on defending their own way, but the humble person seeks God's way, even when it requires painful changes.

We must therefore examine our hearts carefully. Are we willing to admit when we have sinned? Can we accept correction from God's Word? Are we prepared to abandon attitudes and practices that displease Him?

God's mercy is not an excuse to continue in sin. Rather, His mercy calls us to repentance and opens the way for restoration. When we humble ourselves before Him, we acknowledge that we cannot cleanse or transform ourselves by our own strength.

TAKE THE LOWEST PLACE BEFORE GOD

God calls His people to humility. We must not approach Him with arrogance or behave as though He owes us anything. Instead, we must recognize His holiness, acknowledge our dependence on Him, and submit ourselves to His authority.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” — James 4:10 (KJV)

Taking the lowest place means abandoning self-exaltation and accepting our need for God's grace. It means being willing to repent, receive correction, and obey His instructions without insisting on our own preferences.

When we humble ourselves before God, we allow Him to work in areas of our lives that pride has kept closed. He can expose hidden sins, correct our motives, heal spiritual wounds, and lead us into a deeper understanding of His will.

We should never imagine that humility diminishes us before God. True humility places us where His grace can accomplish its transforming work. Our confidence must not rest in our own goodness but in the mercy and faithfulness of the Lord.

Let us therefore choose humility every day, trusting God to accomplish what is beyond our ability.

GOD DESIRES TO DWELL AMONG AN OBEDIENT PEOPLE

God desires a people who honour His presence and obey His Word. His people must not seek His blessings while deliberately resisting His instructions. We must pursue a life of daily surrender, allowing His Spirit to guide our conduct and shape our character.

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 (KJV)

Obedience demonstrates that our love for God is genuine. It is not enough to speak about His presence while refusing to follow His commands. We must be willing to obey Him in our thoughts, relationships, decisions, and daily conduct.

When people continually resist the Holy Spirit, they harden their hearts and become less responsive to God's correction. They may increasingly surrender to fleshly desires and lose sight of the holiness to which God has called them.

However, those who desire to walk with God must continually seek His guidance, repent when they fall, and remain willing to follow His truth. We must not allow stubbornness or self-indulgence to rule our lives.

Let us seek to remain in fellowship with the Lord through faith, repentance, prayer, and obedience. Our desire should be to honour Him in everything we do.

DO NOT RESIST THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

When people reject the work of God's Spirit and continually surrender to their fleshly desires, their spiritual lives become increasingly corrupted. Instead of growing in holiness, they become controlled by selfishness, sinful passions, and rebellion against God's authority.

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” — Galatians 5:16 (KJV)

God calls us to submit our desires to His Spirit rather than allow our flesh to govern us. We must reject every attitude that draws us away from His truth and remain willing to be corrected and transformed.

A person who continually resists God's conviction should not assume that everything is well simply because they continue to participate in religious activities. Genuine spiritual life is demonstrated through an increasing willingness to obey God and turn away from sin.

We must therefore stop feeding the desires that weaken our relationship with the Lord. Instead, let us cultivate prayer, humility, holiness, and obedience. When we recognize that we have gone astray, we must return to God rather than continue resisting His correction.

The Lord calls His people to live under the leadership of His Spirit so that their lives may reflect His character and bring glory to His name.
