The Deceitfulness of Riches By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"

— Matthew 16:26 (ESV)

Introduction:

We live in a time when many are blinded by the lure of worldly riches, pursuing wealth that is fleeting and cursed. The treasures of this world, though enticing, bring destruction and damnation. They deceive, enslave, and separate us from the true riches that can only be found in God’s Kingdom. This teaching explores the consequences of prioritizing earthly wealth over the eternal treasures that God provides.

Despising the Treasures of God's Kingdom

The pursuit of worldly riches has caused many to despise the treasures of God's Kingdom. “Their eyes have been blinded by the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), leading them to prioritize the temporal over the eternal. These riches bring curses, vexation, and despair, for they are rooted in darkness and deceit.

The Deceitfulness of Worldly Riches

Riches of this world make themselves wings and fly away (Proverbs 23:5). They are fleeting and cannot provide true satisfaction. Those who chase them often find themselves enslaved, endlessly seeking more, yet never content. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:10).

The Curse of Greed and Lust for Gain

Greed and the lust for riches bring with them destruction and God's wrath. Many, including ministers, have been consumed by the deceitfulness of wealth, leading themselves and others astray. As written, “Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land” (Isaiah 5:8), greed invites divine judgment.

The True Riches of God’s Kingdom

God calls us to pursue the treasures that are eternal and found in Him. These are riches that do not fade or corrupt. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20). Walking in humility and obedience allows us to receive these enduring treasures.

The Wrath of God Against Greedy Hearts

God’s wrath is upon those who prioritize worldly riches. They accumulate wealth only to lose it under His judgment. “Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death” (Proverbs 11:4). The very riches they trust will become their downfall, for God will strip and judge them accordingly.

Walking in the Path of Righteousness

God calls His people to walk circumspectly, avoiding the snares of greed and deceitful gain. By doing so, we remain in His truth and light. “The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it” (Proverbs 10:22). Those who walk in His ways receive peace and joy, free from the bondage of worldly lust.
