DO NOT SLUMBER IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION
God desires His people to remain spiritually awake, attentive, and ready to hear His voice. When we come before Him with careless hearts, spiritual laziness, and wandering minds, we may fail to receive the instruction He desires to give us. Although our bodies may be physically present in prayer and worship, our hearts can be distracted and our spirits inattentive. Therefore, we must approach the Lord with reverence, alertness, and a sincere desire to hear and obey Him.
Spiritual slumber is more than physical tiredness. It describes a condition in which believers become careless about their relationship with God, neglect prayer, tolerate sin, and lose their sensitivity to His truth. When such carelessness continues, people may gradually become comfortable with practices that displease God. What they once recognized as sin may eventually seem normal because their spiritual discernment has weakened.
The Lord calls us to wake up, examine our lives, and renew our commitment to Him. He desires a people who seek His presence diligently, offer Him their best, and serve Him with gratitude and joy. We must not allow laziness, distractions, or complacency to weaken our spiritual lives. Instead, let us remain watchful, worship God sincerely, and live each day with hearts prepared to hear His Word.

BE ALERT WHEN YOU COME BEFORE GOD
When we approach God in prayer, worship, or the study of His Word, we should do so with attentive hearts. Prayer is not merely a routine to complete, nor is worship simply an outward activity. These are opportunities to seek the Lord, receive His instruction, and respond to His truth. If our minds continually wander and we show little concern for what He has said, we may miss important lessons that should shape our lives.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
God desires us to approach Him thoughtfully and reverently. We should remove unnecessary distractions, prepare our hearts, and give proper attention to His Word. Physical tiredness can sometimes affect concentration, but spiritual carelessness must not become our habitual attitude. When we recognize that we are distracted, we should refocus our minds and return our attention to the Lord.
We must also remember that listening to God requires more than expecting an extraordinary experience. He has already given us His written Word, which teaches us His character, commands, promises, and purposes. As we read Scripture prayerfully, we should remain ready to receive its instruction and apply it to our lives. A spiritually attentive person does not merely seek to hear something new but is willing to obey the truth already revealed.

WAKE UP FROM SPIRITUAL LAZINESS
Spiritual laziness weakens our commitment to prayer, worship, obedience, and the pursuit of holiness. When believers become careless, they may gradually reduce the time they spend seeking God and become less concerned about their spiritual condition. What begins as neglect can develop into a pattern of disobedience if it is not corrected.
“Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” — Ephesians 5:14 (KJV)
The danger of spiritual slumber is that it often develops gradually. A person may begin by neglecting prayer, then become indifferent toward Scripture, and eventually tolerate attitudes and behaviours that contradict God's commands. As this condition deepens, the conscience may become less responsive to correction. Sin becomes easier to excuse, and repentance is postponed.
This is why we must examine ourselves honestly. Are we growing in obedience, or are we becoming comfortable with spiritual neglect? Have we allowed worldly entertainment, personal ambitions, or daily responsibilities to displace our devotion to God? These questions are important because spiritual growth requires attention and discipline.
We must reject complacency and renew our commitment to seek the Lord. This does not mean relying on human strength alone; it means responding faithfully to God's grace by pursuing Him through prayer, Scripture, repentance, and obedience. Let us rise from spiritual laziness and become watchful servants who take their calling seriously.

GUARD YOUR HEART AGAINST THE DECEPTION OF SIN
Sin becomes especially dangerous when people stop recognizing its seriousness. Repeated disobedience can harden the heart and weaken a person's willingness to receive correction. When believers repeatedly ignore God's instructions, they may eventually defend the very conduct they once knew was wrong. Spiritual slumber therefore creates conditions in which sin can grow and deceive the heart.
“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” — Hebrews 3:13 (KJV)
We must not assume that a familiar sin has become acceptable simply because it has continued for a long time. God's truth does not change according to human preferences or popular opinions. We must allow Scripture to examine our conduct and correct our thinking, even when its message challenges our habits.
A spiritually alert believer remains willing to repent. When the Word of God exposes wrongdoing, the proper response is humility rather than excuses. We must confess our sins, turn away from them, and seek God's help to walk in righteousness. The Lord calls us to holiness because He desires His people to live in truth and fellowship with Him.
The Church must also guard against becoming indifferent to sin. Spiritual activities and religious language cannot replace genuine obedience to God. Believers must continually return to Scripture, encourage one another in truth, and refuse to normalize conduct that contradicts God's Word.

OFFER GOD YOUR BEST WITH A GRATEFUL HEART
God deserves our sincere devotion and our willing service. We should not treat Him as though He deserves only whatever remains after we have satisfied our own interests. When we honour Him, we should do so with gratitude, reverence, and a heart that recognizes His goodness.
“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase.” — Proverbs 3:9 (KJV)
Giving God our best involves more than material offerings. It includes our time, attention, abilities, obedience, worship, and willingness to serve. We must not reserve our greatest commitment for worldly ambitions while offering God only distracted attention and reluctant service. He deserves our sincere love and faithful devotion.
Our offerings should never be motivated merely by an expectation of receiving material rewards. We honour God because He is worthy, because He has shown us mercy, and because our lives belong to Him. Biblical generosity is an expression of gratitude and faith, not a method of controlling God or guaranteeing personal prosperity.
Let us therefore examine the quality of our devotion. Do we worship with sincere hearts? Do we give willingly according to our ability? Do we serve faithfully even when no one praises us? God desires integrity in our worship and consistency in our obedience. Let our lives demonstrate that He holds first place in our hearts.

SERVE THE LORD WITH JOY AND THANKSGIVING
God desires His people to serve Him willingly and gratefully. Service should not be reduced to an outward duty performed with constant resentment. We should remember His mercy, the gift of salvation, and the privilege of being able to worship and serve Him. Gratitude helps us maintain a faithful attitude even when our responsibilities become difficult.
“Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” — Psalm 100:2 (KJV)
There will be times when serving God requires sacrifice, patience, and perseverance. Joy does not mean that we will never experience sorrow or weariness. Rather, it means that our commitment to the Lord rests on our love for Him and our trust in His faithfulness. We can continue serving Him through difficult circumstances because our devotion is not dependent solely on favourable feelings.
When we serve God with gratitude, we acknowledge that everything we have ultimately depends upon His grace. We become less focused on recognition and more concerned with pleasing Him. We learn to serve faithfully whether our work is visible to others or known only to God.
We must not allow complaining, bitterness, or discouragement to govern our service. Instead, let us ask the Lord to renew our hearts and help us serve Him sincerely. Our gratitude should be expressed through worship, obedience, generosity, and practical love toward others.

REMAIN WATCHFUL AGAINST SPIRITUAL ATTACKS
The Christian life requires vigilance because believers face temptations, deception, and pressures that can weaken their faith. Spiritual laziness makes it easier to neglect God's Word, entertain destructive influences, and respond carelessly to temptation. We must therefore remain alert and depend upon God's strength rather than assuming that we are beyond danger.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
Being spiritually watchful involves prayer, discernment, obedience, and a willingness to resist temptation. We should examine the influences we allow into our minds and hearts, making sure they do not lead us away from God's truth. We must also avoid pride, because believing that we cannot fall can make us careless about the very dangers we should take seriously.
God has not called us to live in fear. He calls us to stand firm in faith, trust His Word, and resist evil. When we face temptation, we should seek His help rather than relying solely on our own determination. When we recognize a weakness, we should address it honestly and seek appropriate spiritual support.
Let us remain watchful in prayer and steadfast in obedience. We must not become spiritually passive while expecting to remain strong. Our confidence is in God, whose grace sustains us as we continue to walk faithfully in His truth.

REMEMBER THE LORD'S DAILY MERCIES
God continues to show mercy to His people. Each new day gives us another opportunity to seek Him, repent of our failures, worship Him, and walk in obedience. We should never treat His mercy as an excuse for carelessness. Instead, His goodness should lead us to deeper gratitude and renewed commitment.
“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
When we awaken each morning, we should remember that life itself is a gift. We have another opportunity to honour God, fulfil our responsibilities, and show love to others. Rather than beginning the day with anxiety or distraction, we can turn our hearts toward Him in prayer and thanksgiving.
God knows our needs and invites us to bring our requests before Him. We should ask for wisdom, provision, strength, and guidance while remaining willing to accept His will. His faithfulness does not mean that every desire will be granted exactly as we expect. It means that we can depend upon His character and trust His care as we follow Him.
Let us respond to His daily mercy with worship and obedience. We should not waste the opportunities He gives us through laziness or spiritual indifference. May each day find us more attentive to His Word, more grateful for His goodness, and more committed to living according to His will.
