CONTINUE TO SEEK THE COUNSEL OF THE LORD By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
Introduction
God desires His people to seek His counsel, listen to His voice, and obey His instructions. Yet many believers rely on their own understanding, pride, and assumptions instead of seeking the Lord. God is our guide, protector, and source of truth. When we seek Him humbly, He directs our paths; when we reject His guidance, we expose ourselves to unnecessary trouble. Therefore, we must continue to seek His counsel, trust His wisdom, and follow His instructions with obedient hearts.

SEEK GOD BEFORE MAKING DECISIONS
Seeking the counsel of the Lord is a privilege and a necessary part of walking with Him. We must not rush into decisions based on assumptions, emotions, or personal confidence. Human understanding is limited, but God's wisdom is perfect. Before deciding which direction to take, we should seek Him in prayer and through His Word.
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.” — Proverbs 12:15 (KJV)

REJECT PRIDE AND SELF-RELIANCE
Pride causes people to believe they know better than God. When we trust our own wisdom above His instructions, we become vulnerable to deception and error. The Lord calls us to humility, repentance, and obedience. We must be willing to kneel before Him, receive correction, and acknowledge our need for His guidance.
“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” — James 4:6 (KJV)

LISTEN TO GOD AND OBEY HIS INSTRUCTIONS
God does not guide His people so that they can disregard His instructions and follow their own desires. He speaks to direct, correct, and preserve us. Our responsibility is to listen attentively and obey faithfully. We must not treat His Word lightly or become impatient when His instructions challenge our preferences.
“To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” — Hebrews 3:15 (KJV)

SEEK GOD AS THE SOURCE OF TRUTH
We should not depend entirely on other people for answers that require us to seek the Lord. Wise counsel from others may be helpful, but God must remain our ultimate authority. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. As we seek Him through prayer and Scripture, we learn to distinguish His truth from our assumptions and desires.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 (KJV)

RECEIVE GOD'S WORD WITH THANKSGIVING
God's Word gives spiritual life, direction, and correction. We must never despise His instructions or resist the truth because it exposes our weaknesses. Instead, we should receive His Word with gratitude and allow the Holy Spirit to transform our attitudes and conduct. A teachable heart welcomes correction because it desires to please God.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword.” — Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

HUMBLE YOURSELF UNDER GOD'S CORRECTION
Those who genuinely belong to God must learn to accept His correction and follow His direction. The Lord corrects us because He desires our spiritual growth and faithfulness. We should not become defensive or rebellious when His Word reveals our mistakes. Humility enables us to turn away from wrongdoing and walk in greater obedience.
“For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.” — Proverbs 3:12 (KJV)

DO NOT RESIST THE LORD'S GUIDANCE
God desires to lead His people in His wisdom, gentleness, and mercy. When we repeatedly reject His counsel, we may bring unnecessary suffering upon ourselves through disobedience. We must not behave stubbornly, like an animal that resists direction. Instead, let us remain attentive to the Lord and trust that His instructions are for our good.
“Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding.” — Psalm 32:9 (KJV)

REMAIN FAITHFUL EVEN WHEN OBEDIENCE IS DIFFICULT
Sometimes our feelings, physical desires, or impatience may make obedience difficult. Nevertheless, we must not allow discomfort to silence our willingness to follow God. His wisdom is greater than our understanding, and His direction remains trustworthy even when we do not immediately see the outcome. Let us persevere in faith, trusting Him to lead us according to His perfect will.
“We ought to obey God rather than men.” — Acts 5:29 (KJV)

Summary
We must continually seek the counsel of the Lord, reject pride, listen to His Word, accept correction, and obey His instructions. God is our guide and the source of truth. We must not rely on assumptions or our own understanding when we can humbly seek His direction. His guidance protects us from the consequences of stubbornness and teaches us to walk faithfully before Him.

Conclusion
Seeking God's counsel must be a consistent way of life, not an occasional response to trouble. The Lord desires people who listen, trust, and obey Him. Let us abandon pride and self-reliance, approach Him with humility, and follow His Word faithfully. Our security is found in walking under His authority rather than insisting on our own way.

Heavenly Father, I come before You acknowledging that I am a sinner and need Your salvation. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again.
