Walking the Rough Road with Christ: The Call to Faithfulness in Difficult Times By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture: “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction… because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13–14)

Introduction
We are living in a time when God is calling His people to an unwavering commitment, steadfast endurance, and spiritual courage. The message before us reveals that the year ahead is marked as a Rough Road for both believers and unbelievers alike. However, the difference lies in how each responds to the challenges. The people of God are called not to fear the roughness of the journey but to become “Rough Riders,” strengthened, focused, and fully aligned with the mind and leading of the Holy Spirit.
The world today is filled with deception, confusion, spiritual blindness, and demonic manipulation. Many people cannot discern between good and evil because they have handed themselves over to the systems of this world, which is the devil’s playground. Spiritual warfare is intensifying across nations, cultures, and communities due to ancient demonic influences that have long held territories and peoples captive. Yet in the midst of this darkness, God still sends His true servants—missionaries, ministers, evangelists, prophets, and faithful witnesses—into the world to declare the Good News, just as Jesus Christ did during His earthly ministry.
Jesus walked a rough road. He endured rejection, persecution, humiliation, suffering, and eventually death on the Cross. He lived humbly, walked among common people, demonstrated love, truth, miracles, and compassion, and remained faithful to the Father’s will until His mission was fulfilled. His life stands as the ultimate example for every believer.
This lesson explores the spiritual realities of these challenging times, the call to courageous discipleship, the reality of demonic opposition, the necessity of faithfulness, and the ultimate glory promised to those who endure even unto death. It is a spiritual awakening and a prophetic alert to believers to remain steadfast, committed, and ready to suffer for the sake of Christ if needed. We are called to walk the same narrow path Jesus walked, trusting in God’s promises and keeping our eyes fixed on eternal glory.

The Reality of the Rough Road Ahead
“In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
The message emphasises that the coming times will not be smooth, predictable, or comfortable. Both those who follow God and those who reject Him will encounter hardship. However, the difference lies in purpose and outcome. For unbelievers, the rough road will lead to torment, confusion, hopelessness, and despair. But for believers, the roughness becomes a training ground for endurance, purification, and spiritual maturity. God is not promising His people an easy journey; instead, He is preparing them to withstand storms with courage and faith.
Those who walk with God must learn to be spiritually tough, disciplined, prayerful, and rooted in the Word. Comfort Christianity will not survive in these times. Only those who are deeply grounded in Christ will remain steadfast.

Spiritual Deception and Territorial Darkness
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
The world is filled with demonic deception. Demons entice, enchant, manipulate, and trap souls under webs of spiritual blindness. Territorial demons influence cultures, traditions, systems, and communities, creating generations of bondage. These forces resist the Gospel and attack those bringing the truth. This explains why missionaries, ministers, and evangelists in difficult regions often face rejection, hatred, persecution, and sometimes death.
Yet God still sends His True Ones. Just as Jesus entered a sin-cursed world, He sends His servants into spiritually dark territories to shine the light of truth. Their calling is not for comfort but for obedience.

Christ Our Greatest Example
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus… who humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the Cross.” (Philippians 2:5–8)
Jesus did not choose comfort. He chose obedience. He lived humbly, walked rough paths, endured mockery, betrayal, false accusation, and torture. Yet He never demanded luxury, special treatment, or human honour. He came with humility, compassion, and truth. By His example, He showed us the lifestyle and attitude expected of true Kingdom servants.
He did miracles among the common people, healed the sick, opened blind eyes, restored broken lives, and revealed the love of God. This stirred jealousy, hatred, and violent opposition from religious hypocrites. Nonetheless, Jesus remained steadfast. His mission was not about building His own reputation but fulfilling God’s purpose.

The Call to True Discipleship and Sacrifice
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24)
True discipleship has always required sacrifice. The message reminds us that martyrdom has never disappeared. Throughout history, countless believers chose to die for Christ rather than deny Him. They faced prisons, beatings, flames, swords, and torture, yet they refused to bow to fear. This same spirit of unwavering faith must rise again in the Church today.
Many churches have become comfortable, complacent, and unwilling to acknowledge suffering as part of Christian commitment. Yet Scripture is clear that faithfulness may demand our very lives. The time is coming when believers will be hated, attacked, and even killed for openly declaring Jesus as Lord.

Standing Firm Against Wickedness
“You will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” (Matthew 10:22)
The wicked, driven by demonic hatred, will rise with cruelty and aggression against the righteous. In nations around the world, believers who boldly stand for Christ will face persecution. True faith will no longer be hidden or casual. It will require courage, boldness, and steadfast conviction.
Those who love Christ must remain faithful, determined, and unwavering even in the face of danger. God promises that those who remain true, even unto death, will receive glorious eternal rewards.

Living with Eternal Perspective
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed.” (Romans 8:18)
The rough road is temporary. Glory is eternal. Those who endure for Christ will receive crowns of glory in eternity. Heaven is watching. Angels stand ready. God remains sovereign. No suffering for Christ is wasted. Every tear, every sacrifice, every hardship endured for the sake of the Gospel is honoured in eternity.
The question every believer must answer is: Am I willing to walk the rough road with Jesus? Am I willing to stand for truth when the world is against it? Am I ready to remain faithful no matter the cost?
