THE BLESSING OF BUFFETING: SHINING THROUGH TRIALS AND DIVINE DISCIPLINE By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you; but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” — 1 Peter 4:12–13 (KJV)

Introduction

The Christian journey is not a path of ease and comfort, but one of transformation through divine processes. From the beginning, God has purposed that His people reflect His glory and manifest His character. Yet, this reflection does not emerge from idleness or comfort—it is shaped through testing, correction, and what Scripture calls “buffeting.”

In the natural world, beauty and brilliance are rarely born without friction. The gold must be refined in fire, the diamond must be cut, and the rough wood must be sanded before it shines. So also, in the spiritual life, God allows His people to face trials, opposition, and divine discipline, not as punishment but as preparation for greater glory.

However, in this age of comfort and self-gratification, many resist the very process that God uses to perfect His people. They see adversity as evil and suffering as unnecessary. Yet the Living God declares that buffeting is not meant to destroy us, but to bring out His beauty within us.

This lesson explores the divine purpose of buffeting, the danger of resisting God’s refining work, and the power of yielding to His perfect will. It calls believers to embrace the seasons of opposition and correction as opportunities to grow in grace and reflect the glory of Christ.

The Divine Purpose of Buffeting

To “buffet” means to strike repeatedly, to shape or polish through repeated blows or pressure. Spiritually, buffeting represents the trials, tests, and adversities that God allows in the life of a believer to refine faith and strengthen obedience.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “And lest I should be exalted above measure, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me” (2 Corinthians 12:7). Though painful, Paul understood that the buffeting served a divine purpose—to keep him humble and dependent upon God’s grace.

When the Living God allows His people to be buffeted, it is not out of cruelty but love. “For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth” (Hebrews 12:6). The pain of correction is temporary, but its fruit is eternal: purity, humility, and spiritual maturity.

Just as the craftsman polishes a rough stone until it shines, God allows friction to bring forth beauty from within. Each trial, each opposition, and each moment of discomfort has divine purpose—to make the believer radiant with His glory.

The Danger of Pride and Resistance

One of the greatest hindrances to spiritual growth is pride. Pride refuses correction, resists divine discipline, and insists on personal comfort. In these times, multitudes reject anything that challenges or opposes them. They interpret every hardship as demonic and fail to discern when God Himself is working through the storm.

The Lord warns, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (James 4:6). When people resist God’s dealings, they cut themselves off from His grace. Pride convinces them that they are “right” even when they are wrong. This self-assuredness leads to stagnation and spiritual dullness.

A stagnant believer is like stagnant water—lifeless, odorless, and uninviting. “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour” (Ecclesiastes 10:1). But when the Spirit is allowed to move freely, as in running water, life and purity flow. Resistance to divine buffeting blocks this flow and results in spiritual decay.

God’s purpose is not to humiliate but to purify. Those who submit to His refining hand are transformed into vessels of honor, while those who resist remain dull and ineffective in His Kingdom.

The Parable of the Stagnant Waters

The Lord uses the imagery of water to teach a profound spiritual truth. A body of water that remains still becomes stagnant, breeding mosquitoes and emitting a foul odor. However, water that flows freely over rocks stays pure, clear, and refreshing.

Jesus declared, “He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). These living waters represent the active, moving work of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life. When a Christian refuses the movement of God—whether through correction, trials, or change—he becomes stagnant and spiritually uninviting.

Many desire comfort, peace, and ease, but few understand that movement comes through resistance. Just as water flows best when it meets obstacles, so does faith grow strongest in times of testing. Stagnation is a sign of spiritual complacency, while motion under pressure is the sign of life.

Therefore, God allows buffeting so that His people may remain alive, vibrant, and reflective of His presence. Through this divine process, we are continually refreshed and replenished, becoming more suitable for His fellowship and service.

Sharing in the Sufferings of Christ

The greatest example of enduring buffeting for a divine purpose is Jesus Christ Himself. He was falsely accused, mocked, scourged, and crucified, yet through His suffering came the redemption of mankind. “Though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered” (Hebrews 5:8).

To be identified with Christ means to share not only in His blessings but also in His sufferings. “If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2:12). The believer who endures trials faithfully becomes a partaker of Christ’s nature and glory.

This is why the Lord calls His people to embrace buffeting rather than resist it. It is not punishment—it is partnership. Through it, we become one with Christ in character, endurance, and humility.

To share in His sufferings is to participate in the holy process of transformation that leads to eternal glory. The temporary pain of the present cannot compare to the eternal reward awaiting those who endure faithfully. “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17).

The Folly of Seeking Comfort Over Conformity

We live in an age where comfort is worshiped and sacrifice is despised. Many believers pursue convenience rather than conformity to Christ. They seek sermons that soothe rather than challenge, messages that entertain rather than transform.

The Lord warns that false prophets and teachers have risen, offering “sugar-coated lies” that appeal to the flesh. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears” (2 Timothy 4:3).

Such people do not desire the truth that purifies; they desire the lies that pacify. Yet, the Living God declares, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent” (Revelation 3:19).

God does not stroke the flesh—He crucifies it. The process of buffeting deals directly with the pride, rebellion, and impurity that dwell within. Only when the flesh is subdued can the spirit truly shine. Those who prefer comfort over correction remain spiritual infants, unable to manifest the fullness of Christ in their lives.

Divine Shelter in the Midst of Buffeting

While buffeting is often painful, God promises His sustaining presence throughout the process. “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee” (Isaiah 43:2).

The Lord never abandons His people in adversity. He shelters them, strengthens them, and uses their trials to draw them nearer. The storms that threaten to destroy them become instruments of divine shaping. Every blow, every storm, every tear is under His divine supervision.

God’s purpose is not to break His people but to build them. He reminds us, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Through buffeting, we learn dependence, humility, and faith. We come to know Him not merely as the Giver of blessings but as the Sustainer of life.

The believer who endures buffeting with gratitude will find that every trial produces new strength, every storm deepens faith, and every hardship polishes the soul until it reflects the image of the Savior.

Thankfulness: The Secret to Spiritual Endurance

A thankful heart is the key to enduring divine buffeting with joy. “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Gratitude shifts the focus from pain to purpose. It reminds the believer that behind every trial stands a loving Father who knows what is best.

When things do not go as imagined, the faithful must not grow angry or accusatory. Instead, they must trust that God is working through the situation for their good. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Those who cultivate gratitude even in affliction are the ones who shine brightest. Their faith becomes unshakable because it is rooted in trust, not circumstance. Gratitude transforms buffeting into blessing and trials into triumph.

Summary

This lesson teaches that divine buffeting is a process of refinement, not punishment. God allows His people to experience opposition, adversity, and correction to bring forth His beauty in them. Pride and resistance lead to stagnation, while humility and surrender lead to transformation.

Just as running water remains pure by movement, so believers remain spiritually alive through divine dealings. To be identified with Christ is to share in His sufferings, for through suffering comes glory. The flesh must be buffeted so that the spirit may shine.

In all things, God remains faithful—providing shelter, grace, and strength. The key to enduring this divine process is thankfulness, for gratitude keeps the heart aligned with God’s purpose.

Conclusion

Buffeting is the furnace where God refines His precious vessels. It is the process by which dullness becomes brilliance and weakness becomes strength. Those who endure divine dealings emerge as purified vessels of honor, shining with the radiance of Christ.

Do not despise adversity; embrace it as the Father’s instrument of love. Every storm, every challenge, every delay is a tool in His hand to shape your destiny. The believer who welcomes God’s refining work will be found mature, fruitful, and unashamed before Him.

Remember, the goal of buffeting is not pain but perfection—the perfection of character, the deepening of faith, and the revelation of God’s glory in your life.
