THE GOD WHO CANNOT BE CONTAINED By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

“But who is able to build Him a house, since heaven, even the highest heaven, cannot contain Him? Who am I then, that I should build Him a house, except as a place to burn sacrifices before Him?” — 2 Chronicles 2:6 (ESV)

Introduction

In every generation, humanity has attempted to define, limit, and rationalize the workings of God within the boundaries of human understanding. Many people who claim to be believers today have confined God into a “box” — a mental and spiritual space where they believe He operates only within their personal expectations. This spiritual limitation is born out of ignorance, pride, and unbelief. It is a symptom of a faith that is bound by human reason instead of divine revelation.

The message of the Lord in this lesson reminds us that God cannot be contained, confined, or restricted. He is the Eternal, the Endless, the Almighty One who operates beyond time, space, and human imagination. From generation to generation, His glory, power, and sovereignty transcend all human authority, philosophy, or limitation. While men rise and fall, kingdoms appear and disappear, and nations boast in their fleeting power, the Lord remains unshaken — the same yesterday, today, and forever.

This teaching calls believers to return to a reverent, unbounded faith — a faith that recognizes the limitless majesty of God and His supreme authority over all creation. It warns against the dangers of pride, unbelief, and spiritual complacency that arise when we try to reduce God to fit our expectations. It also invites us to walk in humility, gratitude, and faith, knowing that our God is greater than any box men can build.

THE LIMITLESS NATURE OF GOD

“Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.” — Psalm 147:5 (NIV)

God’s greatness is beyond comprehension. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. Nothing in all creation can define or restrict His being. He transcends every boundary of time, matter, and space. When men attempt to imagine Him within the limits of their logic, they fail to grasp His infinite majesty.

The prophetic word declares that many believers in these days have tried to put God in a box of estimation — a mental box that determines what they think He can or cannot do. Yet, this is spiritual blindness. God is not limited by human thought or theology. He cannot be confined by denominational traditions, intellectual reasoning, or personal experience. He is the Eternal Spirit who fills all in all.

God’s actions and ways are higher than ours. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” — Isaiah 55:8–9 (NIV)

The moment we think we fully understand God, we have already begun to limit Him. He reveals Himself progressively, as we walk by faith and obedience. The more we humble ourselves before Him, the more we discover that He is truly without limit.

THE FOLLY OF PUTTING GOD IN A BOX

“They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.” — Romans 1:23 (NIV)

To “box” God is to create a false image of Him — to make Him smaller, predictable, or subject to human rules. It is to exchange His divine majesty for an image that fits our comfort zone. Many believers have reduced God to a theology of convenience: they believe in Him only to the degree that He fits their opinions, doctrines, or desires.

This was the sin of ancient Israel. Though they had seen God’s power in Egypt and the wilderness, they still turned to idols, demanding a god they could see and control. Likewise, today’s generation builds intellectual and religious idols — doctrines, denominations, traditions — that define what God “can” or “cannot” do.

When we place God in a box, we insult His sovereignty and limit the flow of His power in our lives. Jesus Himself was rejected in Nazareth because the people thought they knew Him too well. “And He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” — Matthew 13:58 (ESV)

Unbelief is the lid of the box that prevents miracles. When faith is absent, God’s power is restrained, not because He is weak, but because He honors His divine principles — He moves where faith exists. Therefore, the believer must tear open every mental box that confines God’s power and begin to believe Him for the impossible.

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY OVER NATIONS AND GENERATIONS

“The nations are as a drop in a bucket and are counted as the small dust on the balance; behold, He takes up the isles as a very little thing.” — Isaiah 40:15 (KJV)

Throughout history, men have exalted themselves in pride, imagining that their power can rival God’s authority. Empires have risen, rulers have boasted, and nations have declared independence from divine law — yet, every one of them has fallen. The Lord alone endures forever.

In the prophetic message, God declares that He can utterly destroy nations full of wickedness, corruption, and rebellion. When the cup of iniquity is full, His wrath is poured out. The flood in Noah’s day, the fire on Sodom, the fall of Babylon, and the destruction of Jerusalem all reveal the same truth: no nation can defy God and endure.

When people and governments glorify sin and promote ungodliness, they invite divine judgment. While they strut in arrogance, God sits enthroned in heaven, laughing at their folly. “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision.” — Psalm 2:4 (NKJV)

Therefore, believers must not fear the wicked or be intimidated by the voices of ungodly systems. Evil may appear powerful for a time, but it is temporary. God will ventilate His wrath and destroy wickedness at its root. Our duty is to remain faithful, humble, and dependent upon His righteousness, knowing that His kingdom alone is eternal.

THE DANGER OF PRIDE AND THE BEAUTY OF HUMILITY

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” — James 4:6 (NIV)

Pride is the root of all spiritual blindness. It causes men to think more highly of themselves and less of God. When a person becomes proud, they build their own little box where they feel safe — a box of self-sufficiency and independence from God. But the Lord detests pride and will always humble those who exalt themselves.

The call of this message is to humility before God. We are nothing without Him. Every breath we take, every success we achieve, and every step we make is sustained by His mercy. To walk humbly before God is to acknowledge His greatness in all things and to trust Him even when we do not understand His ways.

Jesus Christ Himself, though equal with God, humbled Himself to the point of death on the cross. “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” — Philippians 2:8 (NIV)

When believers live in humility, they open the door for divine revelation and grace. Humility is not weakness; it is strength under submission. It is the recognition that God is infinite, and we are finite. It allows us to walk in faith and obedience, knowing that He knows all things and works all things together for good.

LIVING BEYOND LIMITATION: FAITH IN THE ENDLESS GOD

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

The Christian life is not meant to be a life of limitation. God calls us to live by faith in His infinite power. Faith is the key that unlocks the unlimited dimension of God’s nature. When we believe in Him without conditions, we give Him room to demonstrate His power in miraculous ways.

The message says, “Be thankful that you can be reliant upon Me in all that you do, for there is no end to Me and what I am able to do.” This truth must shape our prayer life, our worship, and our obedience. God still works miracles. He still heals, delivers, and provides. The only thing that limits His manifestation is unbelief.

Faith is the bridge between the natural and the supernatural. It calls us to trust in what we cannot see and depend upon the Word of God even when the world mocks us. When we live in gratitude and trust, we will see the wonders of His hand repeatedly.

THE EARTHLY JOURNEY: A TEST OF FAITHFULNESS

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.” — Psalm 37:23 (NKJV)

This earthly life is not the final destination but the proving ground of our faith. Every day, God directs our steps and refines our character through trials, challenges, and spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit is our guide, shining divine light upon our path.

The world offers distractions that appeal to pride, greed, and lust. Those who become absorbed in worldly pleasures lose their spiritual strength and become blind to eternal truth. But those who remain focused on God will walk in purity and purpose. “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15 (NKJV)

Believers are called to live differently — to be a light in a dark world, reflecting God’s character and truth in every action. The more we fix our eyes on Christ, the less power the world has over us.

SUMMARY

God is not a man that He should be limited, defined, or contained. He is the Eternal, Boundless, and Sovereign Creator. Those who attempt to box Him within human reasoning or personal expectation lose the revelation of His power. The nations that defy Him will perish; the proud will be humbled; and the wicked will face destruction. But the humble, faithful, and grateful will witness His miracles and dwell in His peace.

Faith, humility, and obedience are the antidotes to spiritual limitation. When we see God as He truly is — limitless and eternal — we walk in freedom, confidence, and divine power.
