THE MEANING OF FOLLOWING GOD By Major Frank Materu

Key Verse

"But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us."

– Romans 8:37

Introduction

Following God is a journey of faith and trust. It requires believers to fix their eyes on Him, even in the face of life’s storms.

The story of Peter walking on water in Matthew 14:25-32 illustrates the challenges of maintaining faith in difficult circumstances. When Peter trusted Jesus, he walked on water. But the moment he focused on the wind and waves, fear overtook him, and he began to sink.

This story underscores an essential truth: faith in God enables us to overcome even the impossible, while doubt causes us to fall. Those who rely on God and His power experience victory and growth, while those who depend on human systems or their understanding falter. God calls us to trust Him fully, regardless of the trials we face.

This article explores what it means to follow God wholeheartedly, drawing lessons from the Bible to encourage believers to live a life of unwavering faith.

1. Trusting God Amidst Life’s Storms

“Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’”

– Matthew 14:31

God desires His people to trust Him in every situation, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. Like Peter, believers often start with faith but become distracted by challenges. Yet, Jesus is always near, ready to lift us when we call upon Him.

Faith requires fixing our gaze on Jesus rather than on our problems. Those who trust Him will experience supernatural strength to overcome challenges and walk in His purpose.

2. Dependence on God, Not Human Systems

"Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots… but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek help from the Lord."

– Isaiah 31:1

Many fall into the trap of relying on human systems or other people instead of God. However, God is the ultimate source of all provision and guidance. While human systems may fail, God’s power is unfailing, and His plans are perfect.

In every trial, there is a divine purpose, even if we do not understand it at the time. Our responsibility is to trust and obey, knowing that God will reveal the reasons for our challenges in due time.

3. Persevering in Faith Leads to Victory

"If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land."

– Isaiah 1:19

God seeks those who will persevere in faith, even through trials. Such individuals will experience His glory and power in their lives. It is not about the length of time one has known God but about the depth of one’s commitment to Him.

Believers who remain steadfast in the Lord are strengthened by His power and equipped to overcome every obstacle. God uses trials to train and refine His people, preparing them for greater works.

4. Surrendering Fully to God

"Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me."

– Luke 9:23

Following God means complete surrender to His will. It requires placing our lives on the altar, trusting Him with everything—whether in life or death. Such surrender brings freedom, as God’s anointing breaks every yoke of oppression.

Believers who fully surrender to God will experience His presence, guidance, and provision. They will walk in His light, free from fear and bondage.

5. Seeking God Wholeheartedly

"You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."

– Jeremiah 29:13

God delights in those who seek Him earnestly. Many claim to follow Jesus but fail to dwell in Him fully, leading to weakness and stagnation. True strength comes from abiding in Christ and living in His presence.

God invites His people to pursue Him with all their hearts, to know Him deeply, and to trust Him entirely. When we do, He reveals His beauty and goodness, enabling us to enjoy the blessings He has prepared for us.

Conclusion

God’s call to His people is clear: trust Him, obey Him, and follow Him wholeheartedly. When we fix our eyes on Him, we find strength, freedom, and victory. Those who rely on human systems will falter, but those who depend on God will walk in His glory.

As believers, let us commit to seeking God, trusting Him in all circumstances, and living in His light. By doing so, we will not only experience His blessings but also glorify Him in all that we do.

"In all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." – Romans 8:37

May we walk in this truth, empowered by His Spirit and guided by His love.

Amen.
