DARING TO BE DIFFERENT By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: Romans 12:2 - "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will."

Introduction

In every generation, God calls out individuals who are willing to stand apart from the world and fully dedicate themselves to His mission. These individuals dare to be different—not for the sake of rebellion, but out of obedience to God’s will. They understand that their lives are not their own and that they are called to a higher purpose. In a world where conformity is often valued above conviction, the true followers of Christ must be willing to endure rejection, persecution, and misunderstanding. The ones who embrace this calling find their satisfaction in God's will, not in the approval of people. This study explores the significance of daring to be different in the Christian walk and the rewards of full surrender to God.

Called to Be Set Apart

1 Peter 2:9 - "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light."

From the beginning, God has called His people to be distinct. Abraham was called out of his homeland to follow God’s direction. Moses led Israel away from Egypt’s influence. The disciples of Christ were instructed to forsake all and follow Him. Today, God still calls believers to be set apart, refusing to be shaped by the world’s standards. Those who answer this call understand that their identity is found in Christ, not in cultural norms or societal expectations.

The Cost of Being Different

Luke 9:23 - "Then He said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.’"

Daring to be different comes with a price. Those who stand firmly for God’s truth will face opposition, just as the prophets, apostles, and Christ Himself did. Many are rejected by society, abandoned by friends, and persecuted for their faith. However, the cost is insignificant when compared to the eternal rewards promised by God. The true disciple understands that following Christ means forsaking worldly comforts and embracing God’s higher calling, even when it is difficult.

Abandoned Unto Him

Philippians 3:8 - "What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ."

To be abandoned unto God is to be fully surrendered to Him, holding nothing back. This means laying down personal ambitions, desires, and earthly attachments for the sake of the Kingdom. The men and women who shine with God’s glory are those who have given their all to Him. They no longer live for themselves but for Christ who dwells in them. Their joy does not come from earthly prosperity but from the presence of God in their lives.

The Power of Radical Obedience

John 14:15 - "If you love Me, keep My commands."

Radical obedience is the hallmark of those who dare to be different. These individuals follow God’s instructions without compromise, even when it contradicts popular opinion. Their obedience is not partial but complete. They are not swayed by fear or doubt because their confidence is in God’s sovereignty. It is through radical obedience that the Great Commission is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God advances on earth.

Summary

God is seeking individuals who are willing to be different—set apart for His glory. These are people who are fully abandoned to Him, obedient in all things, and unafraid of rejection. They do not conform to the world’s standards but live by the principles of the Kingdom. Though they may suffer in this life, they are richly rewarded both now and in eternity.

Prayer of Salvation

Heavenly Father, I come before You today, acknowledging that I am a sinner in need of Your grace. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that He rose again on the third day. I repent of my sins and surrender my life to You. Lord Jesus, come into my heart, be my Savior, and lead me in Your ways. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to live for You all the days of my life. Thank You for Your love, mercy, and salvation. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
