SERIOUS OR DELIRIOUS? By Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture: 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
Introduction
In these challenging times, the call to spiritual sobriety and seriousness is louder than ever. The world is filled with distractions, delusions, and temptations that aim to intoxicate our minds and lead us astray from the path of righteousness. As believers, we are called to be vigilant, temperate, and unwavering in our faith. This teaching explores the critical need for seriousness in our walk with God and warns against the dangers of spiritual and worldly intoxication, which lead to delirium and destruction.

Be Serious in Your Walk with God
1 Peter 1:13 (NIV)
"Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming."
God desires His people to live a life of seriousness and dedication. Being serious means living with purpose, obedience, and focus on God’s will. It involves recognizing the spiritual battle we are in and being equipped to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes. A serious believer reflects the character of Christ and influences others to turn toward the light of salvation.

The Dangers of Spiritual Intoxication
Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)
"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."
Spiritual intoxication occurs when individuals allow the pleasures of the world, pride, and sin to cloud their judgment. This intoxication is not limited to substances like drugs or alcohol; it includes anything that takes our focus away from God. Such a state leads to demonic influence, spiritual blindness, and ultimately, destruction. Believers must reject these distractions and remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ.

The Consequences of Delirium
Proverbs 14:12 (NIV)
"There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death."
Those who choose to live in spiritual delirium—confusion, rebellion, and sin—find themselves under the control of demonic forces. The consequences are tragic, affecting not only their lives but also the lives of others. Violence, broken families, and imprisonment are just a few examples of the devastation caused by such a lifestyle. The devil’s goal is to steal, kill, and destroy, and he uses intoxication and delusion to achieve this.

The Call to Sobriety and Holiness
Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Sobriety in the spiritual sense is about living a life consecrated to God. It requires self-discipline, vigilance, and a focus on righteousness. Holiness is not an option but a command from God. By walking in holiness, believers become vessels of honor, fit for the Master’s use.

The Power of Submission to God
James 4:7 (NIV)
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Submission to God is the key to overcoming the schemes of the enemy. It involves yielding our desires, thoughts, and actions to His will. Through submission, we receive the power to resist the devil and walk in victory. A sober and submitted mind is a fortress against the enemy’s attacks.
