Longing for and Imitating the Ways of the Heathen By Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
"Now therefore, listen to their voice. However, you shall solemnly warn them and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
– 1 Samuel 8:9 (NKJV)

Introduction
Throughout history, God's people have often strayed from His guidance, longing to imitate the ways of the heathen rather than embracing His divine rulership. In the days of Samuel, Israel rejected God's authority, crying out for a king to be like other nations. What followed was oppression and bondage under human rule, a reflection of their disobedience and lack of trust in God's sovereignty. This pattern continues today as many believers choose worldly systems over divine governance, leading to spiritual decay, oppression, and separation from God.

The Rejection of God’s Rulership
When God's people reject His authority, they inevitably invite oppression and darkness into their lives. In 1 Samuel 8:7, God said to Samuel: “They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.” This rebellion stems from pride and the desire to conform to worldly systems, ultimately leading to devastating consequences. God's people, instead of walking in His light, often choose the rule of carnality, which brings moral decay and spiritual bondage.

The Consequences of Imitating the Heathen
When Israel demanded a king, God gave them what they asked for, but with it came suffering. In 1 Samuel 8:18, it is written: “And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.” Similarly, in modern times, choosing worldly systems over God results in spiritual oppression, loss of freedom, and estrangement from Him. The state, once embraced as a solution, becomes a cruel master, oppressing those who sought its rule.

God’s Call to Return to His Rule
God continually sends prophets and His Word to call His people back to His authority. In Isaiah 30:15, He declares: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” Embracing His guidance leads to life, peace, and freedom. Rejecting His ways, however, invites the rule of darkness, and ultimately, God’s wrath is revealed against persistent disobedience.

The Downfall of Prideful Rebellion
Proverbs 16:18 reminds us: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Pride and rebellion against God's rulership result in captivity and sorrow. Those who trust in worldly wisdom and reject God's guidance are left to face the consequences of their choices, often leading to spiritual desolation and ruin.

Summary
This teaching highlights the dangers of rejecting God’s rule and longing for the ways of the heathen. The Israelites’ demand for a king led to oppression, a fate mirrored today when believers choose worldly systems over God’s governance. Spiritual freedom, peace, and righteousness are found in surrendering to God’s authority.

Conclusion
God's rulership offers protection, peace, and guidance. When His people reject His authority, they invite oppression and spiritual decay. Yet, His arms remain open for those who repent and return to Him. As Isaiah 55:7 encourages: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”

Final Word of Encouragement
Remember, God's rulership is not burdensome but liberating. He desires to lead you in paths of righteousness and peace. Trust in Him, for His plans are for your good. As Jeremiah 29:11 promises: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Stay faithful and walk in His light!
