How the Word of God Spread By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
Isaiah 55:11 – “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Introduction
Before humanity confined the Word of God within the structures of religion, the Word advanced powerfully, reaching people in their everyday lives. It moved in marketplaces, public gatherings, and informal settings, carried by the Spirit of God to all who were open to receive it.
Today, there is a tendency to limit God's Word to formal, controlled environments. However, the Spirit of God cannot be restricted. He is alive and active, moving through various spaces to touch hearts and transform lives. This teaching explores how the Word of God spreads, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the distinction between religious practices and genuine obedience.
1. The Word of God Moves Beyond Boundaries
The Word of God is not confined to specific locations or religious institutions. It reaches people where they are, often in unexpected places. Jesus Himself preached in homes, on mountains, by the sea, and in marketplaces.
Supportive Scripture:
- Acts 5:42 – “Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.”
- John 1:14 – “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
Emphasis: God's Word is alive, powerful, and capable of reaching people in every situation. We must remain open to His Spirit to see His work in unexpected ways.
2. Obedience Over Religion
Many people mistake religious activities for obedience to God. However, religion often focuses on outward appearances, while obedience stems from a heart surrendered to God. The Pharisees were highly religious but lacked true submission to God's will.
Supportive Scripture:
- 1 Samuel 15:22 – “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”
- Matthew 23:27 – “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.”
Emphasis: “God desires obedience, not outward religious rituals.” True righteousness comes from aligning our hearts and actions with God's will.
3. The Holy Spirit is the Power Behind the Word
The Holy Spirit is the driving force that makes the Word of God transformative. He penetrates the deepest parts of a person’s heart, calling them to repentance and drawing them into a relationship with God.
Supportive Scripture:
- John 16:13 – “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”
- Romans 8:26 – “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
Emphasis: Allow the Holy Spirit to work through you. He is the only one who can reach the depths of a person’s soul and bring lasting transformation.
4. Pray as the Spirit Leads
Prayer is a powerful tool when guided by the Holy Spirit. Prayers that seek human recognition or approval lose their effectiveness. Instead, God calls us to pray according to His will, trusting Him to act.
Supportive Scripture:
- Matthew 6:5-6 – “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”
- James 5:16 – “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Emphasis: “Pray as the Spirit directs, and your prayers will align with God’s purposes.”
5. Avoid Comfort Zones and Embrace the Fire of the Spirit
When believers settle into comfort, they risk stagnating in their faith. God calls us to be fervent and passionate, allowing His fire to refine and empower us.
Supportive Scripture:
- Revelation 3:15-16 – “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
- Romans 12:11 – “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”
Emphasis: Be a vessel of God’s fire. Avoid complacency and embrace the calling to worship God in Spirit and truth.
Conclusion
The Word of God is alive and active, reaching people in ways that religion cannot. True transformation comes through obedience and the work of the Holy Spirit, not through religious rituals or appearances.
We are called to worship God authentically, pray as the Spirit leads, and live with fervent faith that glorifies Him.
Let us embrace this calling, knowing that the Word of God will never return empty but will accomplish its purpose. Be open to His Spirit, live in obedience, and share His Word boldly, wherever He leads you.
