HONORING GOD\'S TRUE SPIRITUAL MESSENGERS: A BIBLICAL CALL TO SUPPORT THOSE WHO LABOR FOR OUR SOULS By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.” — Galatians 6:6 (NKJV)
Introduction
Throughout Scripture, God has consistently revealed His heart concerning those whom He calls, anoints, and sends to minister His Word. From the Old Testament prophets to the apostles of the New Testament, God has always expected His people to honor those who faithfully labor in the ministry of His Kingdom. Such honor has never been limited to words of appreciation or public recognition. Rather, biblical honor includes practical care, material support, heartfelt gratitude, and genuine partnership in the work of God.
Sadly, one of the greatest contradictions within the modern Church is that many believers have benefited tremendously from faithful servants of God yet neglect them after receiving spiritual nourishment. Many have received biblical instruction, correction, encouragement, healing, restoration, and guidance through the sacrificial ministry of God's true servants. However, once they become established financially or socially, their priorities often shift toward personal comfort, worldly possessions, and self-centered living. Instead of remembering those who labored tirelessly for their spiritual growth, they become consumed with accumulating earthly treasures that neither satisfy nor endure.
The Lord continually distinguishes between His true servants and those who merely seek personal gain through religion. False ministers often attract wealth through manipulation, emotional pressure, and promises of earthly prosperity, while genuine servants frequently endure financial hardship because they refuse to merchandise the Gospel. Their greatest desire is not personal enrichment but the salvation, maturity, and eternal security of souls. They gladly invest their lives in people without expecting payment for every act of ministry. Nevertheless, God's design has never been that His faithful servants should suffer neglect while those they have served enjoy abundance.
This lesson examines God's perspective concerning spiritual responsibility toward those who have faithfully ministered His Word. It also challenges believers to examine their priorities, repent where necessary, and rediscover the biblical principle of honoring spiritual parents through love, gratitude, generosity, and faithful partnership. Ultimately, this is not merely a lesson about financial giving. It is a lesson about recognizing God's order, valuing His Kingdom above worldly pursuits, and demonstrating genuine gratitude for those who have invested their lives in preparing us for eternity.

God Calls and Appoints His True Messengers
God alone establishes true ministry. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are not products of human ambition but divine appointment. Their authority originates from God Himself, and their responsibility is to faithfully communicate His truth regardless of personal cost.
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.” — Ephesians 4:11
These ministries exist for the equipping of believers, the edification of Christ's Body, and the spiritual maturity of God's people. They are not positions of privilege but offices of sacrifice. Every true servant carries burdens that remain largely unseen. They spend countless hours praying, studying Scripture, counseling broken people, comforting the grieving, confronting sin, and standing faithfully for truth in hostile environments.
The world frequently misunderstands such servants because their values differ from worldly success. Their greatest joy is seeing lives transformed by Christ. They rejoice when sinners repent, families are restored, and believers mature in faith. Their ministry is measured not by earthly wealth but by eternal fruit.

The Responsibility of Spiritual Children
Scripture repeatedly teaches that receiving spiritual instruction creates spiritual responsibility. Those who benefit from faithful ministry are called to respond with appreciation expressed through practical support.
“Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.” — Galatians 6:6
This verse establishes partnership rather than exploitation. The teacher freely ministers the Word of God, while the learner willingly shares material blessings. Such partnership reflects mutual love within God's family.
The relationship between spiritual parents and spiritual children resembles the natural family established by God. Loving parents invest years of sacrifice into raising their children. Likewise, faithful ministers invest years developing believers into mature disciples. Spiritual children therefore dishonor God when they ignore those who faithfully nurtured them while pursuing their own comfort and prosperity.
Gratitude must mature beyond emotional appreciation into practical action. Genuine thankfulness demonstrates itself through consistent care, encouragement, and partnership with those who have faithfully ministered God's truth.

Paul's Example Was an Exception, Not God's Ideal
Many believers use the Apostle Paul as justification for expecting ministers to support themselves financially. While Paul indeed worked as a tentmaker, Scripture clearly reveals his reasons.
“Nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day.” — 2 Thessalonians 3:8
Paul chose this path under particular circumstances to avoid unnecessary obstacles to the Gospel. However, he repeatedly taught that ministers possess the legitimate right to receive material support.
“The Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.” — 1 Corinthians 9:14
Paul deliberately surrendered certain rights for strategic ministry purposes, but he never denied that these rights existed. Unfortunately, many churches have transformed Paul's voluntary sacrifice into a permanent expectation for every minister. Such thinking ignores Paul's own teaching and often places unnecessary burdens upon faithful servants of God.
God never intended His servants to be forced into exhausting labor merely to survive while simultaneously carrying the weight of shepherding His people.

The Danger of Materialism
One of the greatest enemies of spiritual generosity is materialism. Modern society constantly encourages people to believe happiness is found through purchasing more possessions. Yet earthly accumulation never satisfies the deepest needs of the human heart.
“Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” — Luke 12:15
Many believers unknowingly become trapped in endless cycles of buying, upgrading, replacing, and accumulating. Meanwhile, opportunities to advance God's Kingdom are overlooked. The tragedy is not merely wasted money but misplaced affection.
Jesus taught that where our treasure resides, our hearts inevitably follow. When believers consistently prioritize personal luxuries over Kingdom responsibilities, they reveal the true condition of their hearts.
God calls His people to examine whether unnecessary consumption has quietly replaced compassionate generosity.

True Messengers Feed Souls, Not Their Own Ego
False ministers often measure success through popularity, wealth, and influence. True servants measure success by transformed lives.
“Feed the flock of God which is among you... not for dishonest gain, but eagerly.” — 1 Peter 5:2
God's authentic servants willingly invest themselves in broken people. They patiently teach Scripture, pray faithfully, confront error with love, and encourage believers toward holiness. They do not invoice people for every prayer, sermon, or act of compassion. Their reward is seeing captives set free by Christ.
Such ministry reflects Jesus Himself, who came not to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. Every genuine servant follows that same pattern of sacrificial love.

Spiritual Hunger Is Greater Than Physical Hunger
The world suffers not only from physical poverty but also from profound spiritual emptiness. Millions search desperately for meaning through entertainment, wealth, relationships, addictions, or endless consumption because they have never encountered the Bread of Life.
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger.” — John 6:35
God's true messengers carry this Living Bread into spiritually starving communities. Their mission extends beyond temporary relief. They proclaim eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Many who appear successful outwardly remain empty inwardly. Only the Gospel satisfies the deepest hunger of the human soul. Therefore, supporting faithful ministers directly contributes to the spread of life-transforming truth throughout the world.

Honoring Spiritual Parents
Scripture places great emphasis upon honoring parents. This principle extends beyond biological relationships into spiritual family.
“We were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children.” — 1 Thessalonians 2:7
Paul described himself as both a nurturing mother and a caring father toward believers because genuine ministry produces family relationships rather than institutional connections.
Spiritual parents provide instruction, correction, encouragement, discipline, wisdom, and loving guidance. Their influence often shapes believers for eternity. Therefore, honoring spiritual parents reflects gratitude toward God Himself, who used them as instruments of His grace.
Neglecting faithful spiritual parents after receiving years of ministry contradicts the very love Christ demonstrated toward His people.

The Widow's Example of Sacrificial Giving
Jesus praised a widow whose offering appeared insignificant according to human standards.
“This poor widow has put in more than all.” — Mark 12:43
Her gift demonstrated complete trust in God rather than financial abundance. Meanwhile, wealthy individuals gave impressive amounts without genuine sacrifice.
God evaluates giving according to the heart rather than the amount. Genuine generosity flows from love, gratitude, and faith. The widow honored God because she entrusted everything into His hands.
Believers today are likewise called to give with willing hearts, trusting God's faithful provision while advancing His Kingdom.

Summary
God's Kingdom advances through faithful servants who willingly dedicate their lives to proclaiming His truth. These men and women deserve honor, gratitude, encouragement, and practical support because they labor for eternal purposes rather than temporary gain. Scripture consistently teaches that believers should value spiritual investment above worldly accumulation. Material possessions eventually disappear, but souls transformed through faithful ministry possess eternal significance. As God's children, we must examine our priorities honestly and ensure that our resources reflect our love for Christ and His Kingdom.

Conclusion
God is calling His people back to biblical stewardship, genuine gratitude, and faithful partnership with those He has appointed to minister His Word. This calling is not rooted in religious obligation but in covenant love. The Lord desires His servants to remain focused upon preaching the Gospel rather than struggling constantly for survival. He also desires believers to mature beyond self-centered living into joyful participation in His eternal mission.
When we honor God's true messengers, we honor the God who sent them. When we strengthen their hands, we become fellow laborers in His harvest. Every act of generosity offered in faith becomes an investment that echoes throughout eternity.

Call to Action
Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart honestly. Ask yourself whether you have faithfully remembered those who helped establish your spiritual life. If you have neglected them, repent sincerely before God. Begin expressing gratitude through prayer, encouragement, fellowship, generosity, and faithful partnership. Refuse to allow materialism to consume your affection while God's servants carry the burdens of ministry alone. Commit yourself afresh to advancing God's Kingdom through both faithful living and faithful giving.

Final Word of Encouragement
God never overlooks acts of love performed for His servants. Every prayer offered, every encouragement spoken, every gift given, and every sacrifice made in support of faithful ministry is remembered before Him. Continue serving with humility, generosity, and sincere devotion. As you invest in God's Kingdom, He will faithfully accomplish His purposes through your obedience and produce eternal fruit that far exceeds anything this present world can offer.

Salvation Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the Name of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. Thank You for loving me and sending Your Son to die on the cross for my sins and to rise again in victory over death.
Today I repent of my sins and turn away from my old life. I ask You to forgive me, cleanse me by the precious blood of Jesus, and make me a new creation. I receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, teach me to walk in obedience to Your Word, and help me to live a life that honors You.
Give me a heart that loves You above all things, a spirit that serves others faithfully, and a desire to support Your work and Your true servants with sincerity and joy. Establish me firmly in Your truth and keep me faithful until the day I see You face to face.
Thank You for saving me. I now belong to You forever.
In the mighty Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
