JUDGMENT AGAINST THE CHURCH By: Major Frank Materu

KEY SCRIPTURE

“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.”

— Acts 17:30–31

INTRODUCTION: WHEN GOD’S MERCY IS REJECTED

There are moments in human history when God allows people time to change, repent, correct their ways, and return to Him. The patience of God is a profound expression of His mercy, because He does not delight in the destruction of human beings. He warns before judgment. He calls before He disciplines. He stretches out His hand before He allows people to experience the consequences of persistent rebellion. Therefore, when God appears to delay judgment, it must never be interpreted as though He has approved of sin. Divine patience is an opportunity for repentance, not a declaration of permission to continue in disobedience.

The Apostle Paul declared that God “commandeth all men every where to repent.” This command is universal. It is not directed only toward unbelievers. It reaches every human being, including those who identify themselves as God's people. It reaches churches, ministers, leaders, worshippers, teachers, prophets, and everyone who publicly claims the name of Christ. The issue is therefore not merely whether a person has a religious identity, but whether that person is genuinely walking in submission to God.

The seriousness of this message becomes evident when we consider the contradiction between what many people profess and how they live. There are people who say they belong to God while deliberately walking contrary to His Word. They speak about holiness while protecting sin. They speak about the Holy Spirit while embracing deception, manipulation, pride, greed, immorality, and spiritual confusion. They proclaim the name of Jesus while their conduct brings disgrace upon that very name.

God is not deceived by religious appearances. He sees what human beings cannot see. He examines the heart, the motives, the hidden decisions, and the fruit of a person's life. A title cannot deceive Him. A position cannot intimidate Him. A crowd cannot impress Him. A religious platform cannot conceal what is happening in the heart. What appears impressive before people can be completely unacceptable before God.

This is why the message of judgment must first be understood as a call to repentance. God's warning is mercy because it gives people an opportunity to turn before consequences become unavoidable. The purpose of this lesson is therefore not simply to create fear, but to awaken the conscience of the Church and call God's people back to truth, holiness, obedience, humility, and the fear of the Lord.

GOD HAS BEEN CALLING, BUT MANY HAVE REFUSED TO REPENT

God has never been careless with humanity. Throughout Scripture, He repeatedly called people to repentance. He sent prophets. He gave warnings. He exposed sin. He corrected kings, priests, leaders, and ordinary people. He showed them the consequences of rebellion and invited them to return to Him.

Yet one of the most serious conditions of the human heart is the ability to hear God's correction and still refuse to change.

“Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out My hand, and no man regarded; but ye have set at nought all My counsel, and would none of My reproof.”

— Proverbs 1:24–25

There is a point at which repeated refusal to listen becomes spiritual hardness. The person may still hear sermons, attend church, sing worship songs, participate in ministry, and speak Christian language, yet inwardly become increasingly resistant to the voice of God. Conviction that once produced sorrow may eventually produce irritation. Correction that once brought repentance may eventually be dismissed. Sin that once seemed serious may eventually become normal.

This is a dangerous spiritual condition.

The problem is not that God has stopped speaking. The problem is that people have stopped listening. They have become accustomed to defending themselves instead of examining themselves. They justify what Scripture condemns. They protect what God is asking them to surrender. They prefer the approval of people to the approval of God.

“Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”

— Hebrews 3:15

The warning is urgent because no human being knows how much time remains. The opportunity to repent should never be treated casually.

GOD’S PATIENCE IS NOT GOD’S APPROVAL

The patience of God is frequently misunderstood. Because judgment does not immediately appear, people sometimes conclude that God does not see their actions or that He has accepted their behavior. This is a serious deception.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

— 2 Peter 3:9

God's patience exists because He desires repentance. Every additional opportunity to turn back to Him is an expression of mercy. But mercy should never be confused with approval.

A person may continue in sin and still wake up the following morning. He may continue in rebellion and still experience prosperity. He may continue rejecting correction and still be respected by society. None of these things proves that God has approved his ways.

The absence of immediate judgment is not proof of innocence.

There are seasons when God allows people to experience His patience, but there is also an appointed time when accountability comes. Scripture repeatedly demonstrates this principle. God warns, people respond or refuse, and eventually consequences follow.

Therefore, the right response to God's patience is not greater confidence in sin. The right response is repentance.

JUDGMENT BEGINS WITH THE HOUSE OF GOD

One of the most serious statements in Scripture concerning divine judgment is found in the first letter of Peter:

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God; and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”

— 1 Peter 4:17

This Scripture destroys the false assumption that religious identity provides immunity from divine accountability. The Church is not above God's examination. Those who carry His name are accountable for how they represent that name.

Judgment beginning with the house of God means that God's people must first examine themselves. Before condemning society, the Church must examine its own condition. Before pointing at the sins of others, believers must ask whether compromise has entered their own hearts. Before criticizing false teachers, they must ask whether they themselves are walking in truth.

Jesus gave an equally sobering warning:

“Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.”

— Matthew 7:21

There is a difference between saying “Lord” and obeying the Lord. There is a difference between carrying the name of Christ and carrying the character of Christ. There is a difference between being publicly recognized as a servant of God and actually being approved by God.

The Church must therefore recover the seriousness of spiritual accountability.

TAKING THE NAME OF THE LORD IN VAIN

There is a generation that speaks the name of Jesus frequently but does not necessarily live under the authority of Jesus. His name is used in songs, sermons, prayers, ministries, businesses, public declarations, personal ambitions, and religious activities. Yet the life behind the words may contradict the very Christ being proclaimed.

This is a serious matter.

When people deliberately live contrary to Christ while publicly claiming to represent Him, they bring dishonor to His name. When spiritual language is used to manipulate people for money, influence, recognition, or control, the name of God is being abused. When holiness is preached publicly while immorality is practiced privately, the Gospel is discredited.

Scripture provides a clear standard:

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.”

— 1 John 5:3

Love for God is not merely a verbal declaration. It is demonstrated through obedience. A person cannot continually reject God's commands and at the same time claim that his relationship with God is healthy.

The Church must therefore recover reverence for the name of the Lord. God's name must never become a covering for rebellion.

THE HARDENING OF THE HEART

Spiritual decline usually begins in the heart before it becomes visible in conduct. A person rarely wakes up one morning and suddenly becomes completely rebellious against God. More often, the process begins with small compromises.

A warning is ignored. A conviction is dismissed. A sinful desire is protected. A correction is rejected. A compromise is justified. Another compromise follows. Eventually, the conscience becomes less sensitive.

The heart becomes hardened.

A hardened heart can still look religious. A person can attend church while being far from God. He can preach while refusing correction. He can pray while protecting secret sin. He can sing about holiness while refusing to surrender his own life.

This is why Scripture says:

“Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do well.”

— Isaiah 1:16–17

Repentance is more than emotional regret. Genuine repentance means turning away from the path of rebellion and returning to God. It involves a change of direction.

God does not call people merely to feel sorry for sin. He calls them to leave sin.

WHEN GOD ALLOWS PEOPLE TO FOLLOW THEIR OWN WAYS

One of the most sobering forms of judgment is described in Romans 1. When people repeatedly reject God's truth and deliberately exchange it for falsehood, Scripture describes God as giving them over to the consequences of their choices.

“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts.”

— Romans 1:24

This is frightening because judgment does not always begin with an external catastrophe. Sometimes judgment begins when a person becomes increasingly controlled by the very desires he refused to surrender.

The person insists on his own way, and eventually his own way becomes his prison.

This principle also applies to those who carry the name of God. Jeremiah records:

“For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by My name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished.”

— Jeremiah 25:29

Being associated with God's name does not make rebellion acceptable.

A church can carry the name of Christ and become compromised. A ministry can use the name of Jesus and become corrupted. An individual can call himself a Christian while deliberately rejecting the authority of Christ.

God sees beyond the label.

THE CALL TO SEPARATION FROM EVIL

There are seasons when God's people must deliberately separate themselves from what is corrupt. Biblical separation does not mean hatred of sinners. It means refusing to participate in sin.

Scripture declares:

“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

— 2 Corinthians 6:17

The believer must understand the difference between reaching people and becoming like them. Jesus associated with sinners because He came to call them to repentance, but He never surrendered His holiness to gain their approval.

There are environments that weaken spiritual conviction. There are relationships that encourage compromise. There are teachings that distort Scripture. There are habits that gradually corrupt the mind and heart.

A person cannot continuously remain in an environment that celebrates what God condemns and expect that environment to have no influence upon him.

There comes a time when obedience requires separation.

BEGIN AT THE SANCTUARY

The seriousness of judgment against those who bear God's name is illustrated in Ezekiel:

“Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.”

— Ezekiel 9:6

The words “begin at My sanctuary” are deeply sobering. The sanctuary was not exempt from examination because it was associated with God's name. Instead, it became the starting point of judgment.

This should awaken every minister, leader, preacher, teacher, worshipper, and believer.

The pulpit cannot become a marketplace for personal ambition. Ministry cannot become a vehicle for greed. Spiritual gifts cannot become instruments of manipulation. Prophecy cannot become entertainment. Worship cannot become a substitute for obedience.

Greater spiritual responsibility brings greater accountability.

The Church must therefore return to integrity, truth, holiness, humility, and the fear of God.

FALSE PROPHETS WILL BE REVEALED BY THEIR FRUIT

Jesus warned His followers:

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits.”

— Matthew 7:15–16

False prophets do not normally present themselves as false. They may appear spiritual, successful, charismatic, influential, knowledgeable, or highly anointed. They may use Scripture and speak the language of faith.

But Jesus gave the Church a test: fruit.

The question is not merely whether someone can attract crowds. The question is whether his life produces holiness, truth, humility, repentance, love, obedience, and the character of Christ.

The Church must therefore recover spiritual discernment.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”

— 1 John 4:1

Not every spiritual manifestation comes from God. Not every prophecy is from God. Not every claim that begins with “God told me” necessarily came from God.

Everything must be tested against the truth of Scripture and the fruit of the life producing it.

THE LOVE OF THE WORLD

One of the greatest dangers facing believers is the gradual replacement of love for God with love for the world.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

— 1 John 2:15

The problem is not simply that people possess material things. The deeper problem occurs when worldly things possess the heart.

A person may become so consumed by money, recognition, pleasure, status, entertainment, influence, relationships, or ambition that God becomes secondary. Temporary rewards begin to appear more valuable than eternal realities.

Jesus asked:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

— Mark 8:36

Nothing this world offers is worth the loss of the soul.

The Church must therefore decide whether it will pursue God's kingdom or become absorbed by the values of the world.

THE DOOR OF SAFETY WILL NOT REMAIN OPEN FOREVER

The story of Noah gives us a powerful picture of divine patience followed by judgment. Noah was given a means of safety while his generation continued in corruption. The ark stood as a testimony that God had provided a way of escape.

But eventually, the door was shut.

“And the LORD shut him in.”

— Genesis 7:16

This is a warning that opportunities have seasons. There is a time when mercy calls. There is a time when repentance can be made. There is a time when the door remains open.

But no one should presume that the opportunity will continue forever.

“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

— 2 Corinthians 6:2

If God is convicting you today, respond today. If He is exposing sin, repent today. If He is calling you away from compromise, obey today.

Do not wait for judgment to teach you what mercy is already teaching you.

________________________________________

A GENERATION MUST CHOOSE

A generation cannot remain permanently neutral toward God. Every person is moving in a direction. Every repeated decision shapes character. Every compromise strengthens another compromise.

Joshua declared:

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”

— Joshua 24:15

The choice is therefore personal.

The believer must choose truth over deception, holiness over compromise, obedience over rebellion, Christ over the world, and God's approval over human applause.

The Church must recover the discipline of prayer. Families must recover biblical values. Ministers must recover integrity. Preachers must recover the burden for souls. Christians must recover the courage to live differently from the world.

This is not a call to religious performance. It is a call to genuine surrender to God.

SUMMARY

The central message of this lesson is that God's judgment is real, and His people are not exempt from accountability. God has been patient, warning humanity and calling people to repentance. Yet patience must never be mistaken for approval.

The most serious warning is directed toward those who carry the name of God while refusing His authority. Religious identity cannot substitute for obedience. Ministry cannot substitute for holiness. Spiritual language cannot substitute for transformation. Public recognition cannot substitute for God's approval.

Judgment begins with the house of God because those who have received God's truth are accountable for how they respond to it.

The Lord is calling His people away from hypocrisy, hardened hearts, worldly compromise, false spirituality, spiritual manipulation, and unholy associations. He is calling them back to truth, repentance, holiness, discernment, obedience, humility, and the fear of God.

The decisive question is not what we say. It is what our lives demonstrate.

CONCLUSION: RETURN TO THE LIVING GOD

The message of judgment should not leave us in despair. The fact that God warns us is evidence that mercy is still being extended.

If you have wandered, return.

If you have compromised, repent.

If you have tolerated sin, separate yourself from it.

If you have trusted religious identity instead of Christ, surrender yourself genuinely to Him.

If you have followed human voices above the Word of God, return to Scripture.

If you have become spiritually cold, seek the Lord again.

The living God is calling His people back to Himself.

“Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”

— Ezekiel 33:11

God has spoken. God has warned. God has given opportunity. The question is whether we will listen.

________________________________________

THE CALL TO ACTION

This is the time to examine yourself before God. Do not measure your spiritual condition merely by comparing yourself with other people. Measure your life against the Word of God.

Ask the Lord to expose what has been hidden. Ask Him to reveal every compromise, every wrong motive, every protected sin, every unhealthy attachment, and every spiritual influence that is drawing you away from Him.

Where there is sin, repent.

Where there is compromise, separate yourself.

Where there is deception, return to truth.

Where there is pride, humble yourself.

Where there is spiritual coldness, return to prayer.

Where there is disobedience, return to obedience.

Do not wait until judgment forces you into the place where repentance should have taken you.

And if you have never genuinely surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, do not postpone that decision. Church membership cannot save you. A ministry title cannot save you. Religious activity cannot save you. Human goodness cannot save you.

Jesus Christ alone is the Savior.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

— Acts 4:12

FINAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Do not receive this message merely as a message of condemnation. Receive it as a warning intended to preserve your soul.

A warning is mercy when there is still time to respond. Correction is mercy when it prevents destruction. Conviction is mercy when it brings a person back to God.

If God is exposing something in your life, do not fight the correction. Do not defend what He is asking you to surrender. Do not become angry because the light of His Word has revealed something hidden.

Thank God that He has allowed you to see it before it is too late.

There is still grace for the repentant. There is still forgiveness for the brokenhearted. There is still restoration for those who return. There is still salvation through Jesus Christ.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

— 1 John 1:9

Therefore, return to God while your heart can still hear His voice. Do not wait for judgment to teach you what mercy is teaching you today.

SALVATION PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself through my own righteousness, religion, works, position, or strength.

I repent of my sins and turn away from every path that has separated me from You. Forgive me for the things I have done knowingly and unknowingly. Forgive me for rebellion, disobedience, pride, compromise, hypocrisy, and every way in which I have dishonored Your holy name.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for my sins, that He was buried, and that He rose again from the dead.

Today, I surrender my life completely to Jesus Christ. Be my Lord and my Savior. Rule over my heart, my mind, my words, my decisions, my relationships, and my entire life.

Deliver me from the love of sin and from the love of the world. Give me a heart that fears You, loves Your Word, obeys Your commandments, and walks in righteousness.

Separate me from every influence, relationship, habit, teaching, and environment that is leading me away from You. Give me discernment to recognize deception and courage to reject everything that is contrary to Your truth.

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to walk faithfully with You until the end.

I receive Your forgiveness, Your mercy, and Your salvation through Jesus Christ.

From this day forward, I choose to follow Jesus.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray.
