TAKE STEPS TO OBEY ME: THE POWER OF IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE IN FULFILLING GOD\'S DIVINE DESTINY By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” (Isaiah 1:19, KJV)
Introduction
One of the greatest challenges believers face in their spiritual journey is not necessarily hearing the voice of God, but responding to His voice with immediate and unwavering obedience. Throughout Scripture, God consistently reveals Himself as a God who speaks, directs, leads, and guides His people according to His divine purposes. Yet, many who hear His instructions often delay, hesitate, question, rationalize, or even ignore what He has made known to them.
The message "Take Steps to Obey Me" is a divine call to action. It is God's invitation for His people to move beyond mere hearing and enter into active obedience. The Lord is not seeking spectators who admire His plans from a distance; He is seeking faithful servants who are willing to trust Him enough to follow His instructions even when circumstances seem impossible.
The history of God's dealings with humanity demonstrates that every major move of God began with someone who was willing to obey. Noah obeyed when there was no evidence of rain. Abraham obeyed when he did not know where he was going. Moses obeyed despite his feelings of inadequacy. The apostles obeyed despite persecution. Above all, Jesus Christ obeyed perfectly, becoming the supreme example of submission to the Father's will.
In our generation, God continues to call men and women into Kingdom assignments. He continues to direct believers toward places, people, ministries, and missions that are part of His eternal purposes. However, many fail to enter their divine destiny because they become trapped in fear, procrastination, uncertainty, and dependence upon human opinions.

This lesson explores the biblical principles of obedience, faith, divine provision, humility, sacrifice, and Kingdom purpose. It reveals that God is fully capable of making a way where no way exists and that those who trust Him completely will discover the joy of walking in His perfect will.
God Expects Immediate Obedience
“To obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)
God's desire has never been merely that His people hear His voice. His desire is that they respond to His voice with obedience. Throughout Scripture, delayed obedience is often revealed as a subtle form of disobedience because it places human reasoning above divine instruction.
Many believers spend years praying for direction and then hesitate when God finally provides it. They seek confirmation after confirmation while postponing the very action God has already instructed them to take. The Lord calls His people to trust Him enough to move forward even when every detail has not yet been revealed.
True obedience requires faith. It involves taking steps before the entire path becomes visible. God often reveals His will progressively. As believers obey one instruction, He reveals the next step.
The Lord does not want His people to become trapped in endless consultation with human advisors while neglecting His clear commands. Wise counsel has value, but it must never replace obedience to God's voice.
Jesus emphasized the importance of acting upon God's instructions:
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22)
The blessing is not merely in hearing God's voice; the blessing is in obeying what He says.
Faith Beyond Circumstances
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
One of the greatest obstacles to obedience is the tendency to focus on circumstances rather than God's power. Human reasoning naturally evaluates available resources, visible opportunities, and existing limitations. Faith, however, focuses upon God's ability.
The Lord reminds His people that He is the Creator of heaven and earth. The One who formed the oceans, established the mountains, and stretched out the heavens is fully capable of creating opportunities where none appear to exist.
When God gives an assignment, He does not expect His people to accomplish it through their own strength alone. Rather, He calls them to trust His provision, guidance, and supernatural intervention.
Abraham experienced this truth when God promised him a son despite his advanced age.
“Being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead.” (Romans 4:19)
Likewise, believers today must resist the temptation to evaluate God's commands according to human limitations. What appears impossible to man remains entirely possible with God.
Faith grows when believers choose to trust God's promises more than they trust their circumstances.
God's Assignments Always Include God's Provision
“And my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
A recurring biblical principle is that whenever God issues a command, He also provides the resources necessary for its fulfillment.
Many believers fear obedience because they cannot see how the practical needs associated with their assignment will be met. They worry about finances, transportation, relationships, opportunities, and future uncertainties.
Yet Scripture repeatedly demonstrates that God supplies what is needed when His people commit themselves to His purposes.
When God instructed Noah to build the ark, He provided the knowledge and materials required. When He called Moses to confront Pharaoh, He empowered him with supernatural authority. When Jesus sent out His disciples, He equipped them with everything necessary for their mission.
The Lord's resources are not limited by earthly economies or human systems. He owns all things and possesses unlimited ability to provide.
“The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Haggai 2:8)
Those who walk in obedience discover that God often opens doors, provides resources, and creates opportunities in ways they could never have anticipated.
Jesus: The Perfect Example of Obedience
“I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” (John 5:30)
No study of obedience is complete without examining the life of Jesus Christ. He remains the ultimate model of humility, submission, and unwavering commitment to God's will.
From the beginning of His earthly ministry until His final breath on the cross, Jesus lived in complete dependence upon the Father. He did not pursue personal ambition, self-preservation, or worldly recognition. Every action He took was governed by His desire to fulfill the Father's purposes.
Jesus consistently demonstrated perfect alignment with God's will.
He preached what the Father instructed Him to preach. He ministered where the Father directed Him to minister. He endured suffering because it was part of the Father's redemptive plan.
Even in Gethsemane, facing unimaginable suffering, Jesus declared:
“Not my will, but thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42)
His obedience was not conditional upon comfort, convenience, or personal benefit. It was rooted in complete trust and surrender.
Believers who desire to fulfill God's calling must adopt the same attitude of submission demonstrated by Christ.

The Cost of True Discipleship
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
The modern world often promotes comfort, self-preservation, and personal advancement as primary goals. The Kingdom of God, however, operates according to different principles.
Jesus taught that true discipleship involves self-denial and sacrificial obedience. Following Christ requires believers to prioritize God's will above personal preferences, ambitions, and desires.
The Lord warns against placing earthly life above Kingdom purpose. While believers should value the lives God has given them, they must never allow fear of loss to prevent obedience.
The apostles understood this principle. Many endured persecution, imprisonment, rejection, and even death because they considered obedience to Christ more valuable than personal safety.
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
Such commitment is not recklessness; it is faithfulness. It reflects an eternal perspective that values God's purposes above temporary comfort.
The Power of Spiritual Multiplication Through Sacrifice
“Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone.” (John 12:24)
One of the profound truths of God's Kingdom is that sacrifice often produces multiplication.
Jesus Himself demonstrated this principle through His death and resurrection. His willingness to surrender His life opened the door for the salvation of countless millions throughout history.
The enemy often believes that removing a messenger will silence the message. Yet throughout history, God has repeatedly transformed apparent defeat into extraordinary victory.
The blood of martyrs has often become the seed of revival. The sacrifices of faithful servants have frequently produced spiritual awakenings that impacted generations.
God's purposes cannot be stopped by human opposition. When one faithful servant completes his assignment, God raises up others to continue the work.
This truth provides confidence and courage for believers who may face challenges while fulfilling their calling.
Walking in Divine Destiny
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
Every believer has been created for a purpose. God's plans are neither random nor accidental. Before birth, He established assignments, opportunities, and Kingdom purposes for each individual.
The tragedy is not that God fails to provide direction; the tragedy is that many people fail to follow it.
Divine destiny is fulfilled through daily obedience. Great Kingdom accomplishments are often the result of countless small acts of faithfulness.
When believers consistently obey the Holy Spirit, they position themselves to walk in God's prepared path. They become instruments through which His purposes are accomplished in the earth.
The Lord delights in those who respond promptly to His leading and trust Him enough to move forward despite uncertainty.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
Summary
God calls His people to immediate and wholehearted obedience. Delayed obedience often becomes disobedience, while genuine faith expresses itself through action. The Lord is fully capable of providing everything necessary to accomplish the assignments He gives. Jesus Christ remains the perfect example of humility, surrender, and obedience to the Father's will.
Believers are called to walk by faith rather than sight, trusting God beyond circumstances and limitations. True discipleship involves sacrifice, commitment, and a willingness to place God's purposes above personal comfort. Through obedience, believers enter their divine destiny and participate in God's eternal plans.

Conclusion
The call to obedience is ultimately a call to trust. God never asks His people to follow Him blindly; He asks them to follow Him faithfully. The One who created the heavens and the earth possesses unlimited wisdom, power, and resources. He knows the end from the beginning and directs His children according to His perfect purposes.
Every instruction from God carries the potential to transform lives, impact communities, advance His Kingdom, and fulfill divine destiny. Therefore, believers must resist procrastination, fear, and hesitation. Instead, they must cultivate hearts that respond quickly and faithfully whenever God speaks.
The path of obedience may not always be easy, but it always leads to God's best.
Call to Action
Take time today to identify any area where God has already spoken but where obedience has been delayed. Bring that matter before the Lord in prayer and make a fresh commitment to follow His direction.
Choose faith over fear. Choose obedience over procrastination. Choose God's will over personal convenience. Determine that from this day forward, you will take practical steps to fulfill whatever assignment God places before you.
The greatest adventures of faith begin with a single act of obedience.
Final Word of Encouragement
God is not looking for perfect people; He is looking for willing people. If He has called you, He will guide you. If He has assigned you, He will equip you. If He has opened a door before you, He will provide the grace necessary to walk through it.
Do not be discouraged by obstacles, delays, opposition, or uncertainty. Keep your eyes upon the Lord and continue moving forward in faith. The God who called Abraham, Moses, Esther, Paul, and countless others remains faithful today.
As you take steps to obey Him, you will discover that His grace is sufficient, His provision is abundant, and His purposes are glorious.
“Be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Salvation Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today in the Name of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that I need Your mercy and forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died on the cross for my sins, and that He rose again from the dead.
Today I repent of my sins and surrender my life completely to You. Lord Jesus, come into my heart and be my Savior and Lord. Wash me with Your precious blood and make me a new creation.
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to walk in obedience to Your voice. Give me the faith to trust You, the courage to follow You, and the humility to submit to Your will every day of my life.
Help me fulfill the purpose for which You created me and enable me to remain faithful until the end. Thank You for Your love, Your grace, and the gift of eternal life.
I declare that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.
