Breaking Free from the Grave Clothes By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: John 11:44 — And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Introduction

The Christian journey is often marked by seasons of spiritual death and resurrection, just as Jesus experienced during His crucifixion and resurrection. These seasons serve to deepen our identification with Christ, shaping our faith and drawing us closer to God's will. However, many believers fail to embrace the fullness of resurrection power because they remain bound by their 'grave clothes'—spiritual heaviness, doubt, and fear that linger from past struggles. This lesson seeks to explore how we can break free from these spiritual bindings and walk in the victorious life that Christ has prepared for us.

The Season of Death and Resurrection

Romans 6:4 — Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Every believer undergoes seasons of trials and difficulties—moments that feel like spiritual death. These moments are not designed to destroy us but to deepen our reliance on God and refine our character. Just as Christ rose victoriously, we too must rise from our trials, refusing to remain entangled in the 'grave clothes' of doubt, fear, and regret.

Heeding the Command to Come Forth

John 11:43 — And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. Jesus' command to Lazarus to come forth is symbolic of His call to every believer. When God calls us out of darkness, He does not expect us to remain bound by what once held us captive. Yet, many hesitate, unsure if they can live beyond their past failures. The call to 'come forth' is a call to live in the liberty and power of God's grace.

The Danger of Remaining in Grave Clothes

Isaiah 61:3 — To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Remaining in spiritual grave clothes leads to spiritual stagnation. Just as Lazarus needed help to remove his bindings, we often need the help of fellow believers and the Holy Spirit to break free from limiting mindsets. Continuing in the state of heaviness and regret prevents us from embracing the joy and purpose God has for us.

Walking in Resurrection Power

Philippians 3:10 — That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. Walking in resurrection power means embracing the new identity Christ has given us. We are no longer defined by our past mistakes or failures. Instead, we are empowered to live boldly for God, demonstrating His glory through our transformed lives.

Summary

Seasons of death and resurrection are a necessary part of the Christian walk. However, God does not desire us to remain bound in our grave clothes. We are called to rise, walk in newness of life, and display the victory of Christ.

Conclusion

Just as Jesus did not remain in the grave, neither should we stay bound by our pasts. God's resurrection power is available to all who believe, and it is time to walk in that freedom.
