THE PILGRIM\'S PROGRESS: STAYING FAITHFUL IN A FALLEN WORLD By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

"The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe." — Proverbs 29:25

Introduction

In this generation, many start their spiritual journey with zeal but lose their way because they become entangled in the cares of this world. They shift their focus from God to worldly matters, ultimately regressing rather than progressing in their faith. God’s desire is for His people to walk steadfastly in obedience to the Holy Spirit, recognizing that this life is but a temporary dwelling and that our true citizenship is in His eternal Kingdom.

The distractions of life, whether they be personal struggles, political instability, or worldly pleasures, have caused many to abandon their divine purpose. Instead of progressing towards their eternal home, they have chosen the broad path of destruction. However, those who remain faithful to God's call must stay focused, avoiding the deception that leads many astray. This teaching serves as a reminder that as pilgrims, we are to fix our eyes on Christ and walk in obedience, resisting the temptation to compromise our faith.

THE DANGER OF REGRESSION

“No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” — Luke 9:62

Many who once walked in the light of truth have turned back to worldliness, deceived by temporary pleasures and the cares of life. Regression is not just stagnation; it is a return to a state of spiritual blindness and disobedience. The enemy entices believers by presenting sin as attractive, causing them to abandon their spiritual progress for momentary satisfaction.

Turning away from God leads to spiritual decay, making one susceptible to the influences of the world and the deception of the enemy. Those who regress lose sight of their eternal purpose, becoming entangled in the very things they were once delivered from. This is why Jesus warned against looking back after committing to Him.

THE FALSE SECURITY OF THIS WORLD

“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” — Psalm 127:1

People seek security in wealth, power, and worldly achievements, believing these will bring them peace. However, history has proven that earthly possessions and human systems are unreliable. Governments rise and fall, economies collapse, and what once seemed stable can be destroyed in an instant.

True security is found only in Christ. No matter how much the world offers, it cannot provide lasting peace. Those who trust in earthly structures rather than in God will ultimately find themselves in despair. It is only through obedience to God’s Word that one can experience true stability and peace.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE: THE BATTLE FOR THE SOUL

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Ephesians 6:12

The chaos and lawlessness we see in the world today are not mere coincidences. The enemy is actively working to deceive and destroy. Many people in leadership positions are under demonic influence, implementing policies that promote wickedness. This is why believers must stay spiritually vigilant, understanding that their true enemy is not man but the forces of darkness that operate behind the scenes.

By keeping their eyes on Christ, believers can resist the devil’s schemes and walk in victory. Those who focus too much on the world's problems risk falling into fear, depression, and hopelessness. However, God’s people are called to rise above these emotions, trusting in His sovereignty.

LIVING AS PILGRIMS IN A FALLEN WORLD

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 3:20

Believers are not meant to feel at home in this world. This earth is a temporary dwelling place, and our true home is with God. The Bible describes us as pilgrims passing through, and as such, we must not become attached to worldly desires. Those who recognize their pilgrimage will prioritize eternal matters over temporary pleasures.

The key to staying on course is daily obedience to the Holy Spirit. When believers allow themselves to be led by the Spirit, they remain on the narrow path that leads to eternal life.

Summary

Many have started their journey with Christ but have been distracted by the cares of this life, leading them into regression rather than spiritual growth. The false security of this world deceives many into thinking they can find peace outside of God. However, true peace and stability come only from trusting in Him. Believers must remain spiritually alert, recognizing that the current state of the world is a result of spiritual warfare. As pilgrims, they must focus on their eternal home rather than becoming entangled in worldly distractions.

Salvation Prayer

If you have not yet given your life to Jesus, pray this prayer sincerely:

“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of Your grace. I repent of my sins and turn away from my old ways. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose again on the third day. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart, fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and help me to walk in Your truth. I trust You with my life and my eternity. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus' name, Amen.”

May the Lord bless and keep you as you remain faithful to Him. Amen!
