DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-17 “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

Introduction

Time is a gift from God—a sacred resource given to fulfill His divine purpose. In a world that increasingly glorifies self-indulgence and slothfulness, many fail to see the significance of using their time wisely. Instead of pursuing the things that matter in eternity, countless individuals are consumed by the fleeting pleasures of this life, often succumbing to destructive habits and addictions. The consequences are dire, both for individuals and societies, as sin and rebellion against God lead to spiritual decay and eventual ruin. This message serves as a call to awaken from slumber, embrace God’s purpose, and redeem the time He has entrusted to us.

The Danger of Wasting Time

Proverbs 6:9-11 “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.”

Wasting time is not a trivial matter. It reflects a lack of reverence for the Creator who has given us life and a divine assignment. Many in today’s generation have become consumed with comfort and ease, seeking refuge in worldly pleasures such as drugs, alcohol, and endless entertainment. These temporary escapes lead to addiction, hopelessness, and ultimately, destruction.

The devil’s agenda thrives in idle lives. Through laziness and neglect of one’s spiritual responsibilities, individuals open the door for darkness to invade and dominate. The wasted time can never be recovered, and its consequences often last beyond the present generation.

Addiction: The Trap of the Enemy

Galatians 5:19-21 “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Addiction is one of the most devastating consequences of wasted time. It not only destroys lives but also robs individuals of their ability to fulfill God’s will. Drugs, alcohol, and other vices are tools of the enemy designed to enslave humanity and prevent them from walking in the freedom Christ offers. As addiction tightens its grip, it leads to physical, emotional, and spiritual death.

A Groaning Creation

Romans 8:22-23 “We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”

The consequences of humanity’s rebellion against God extend beyond individuals to the entire creation. The earth groans under the weight of sin, manifesting through natural disasters, environmental degradation, and societal chaos. These are reminders of the urgency to turn back to God and align our lives with His will. Creation itself longs for the redemption that only comes through Christ.

The Call to Redeem the Time

Colossians 4:5 “Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.”

Redeeming the time requires intentionality and discipline. It begins with acknowledging God as the source of life and aligning our priorities with His Word. Instead of succumbing to laziness or despair, believers are called to rise in faith, engage in purposeful living, and invest in eternal values. By seeking God’s guidance and walking in His Spirit, we can make every moment count for His glory.

However, those who choose to seek God, redeem the time, and live according to His purposes will find hope, joy, and fulfillment.
