DISCERNMENT IN THE MIDST OF DECEPTION: STANDING STEADFAST AGAINST THE COUNSELS OF THE WICKED By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith.”
(1 Peter 5:8–9)

INTRODUCTION
Throughout the history of God’s dealings with humanity, there has always been a clear distinction between the way of truth and the way of deception, between the counsel of God and the schemes of the wicked. The message before us is a solemn and loving warning from the Living God to His people, revealing that opposition, conspiracy, and deception are not accidental occurrences but deliberate strategies employed by those who hate God and His truth. The Lord speaks plainly, not to instill fear, but to sharpen discernment and preserve His people from falling into carefully laid traps.
In every generation, those who stand faithfully in righteousness and integrity before God inevitably attract resistance. This resistance is not merely human in origin; it is spiritual at its core. The hatred directed at God’s people is ultimately hatred toward God Himself. As a result, the enemy works tirelessly through lies, flattering words, manipulation, mockery, and false counsel to uproot believers from their faith and compromise their obedience.
This lesson emphasizes the necessity of spiritual vigilance, obedience to the Holy Spirit, and unwavering trust in God’s counsel. It confronts the danger of ignoring divine warnings, leaning on human understanding, and assuming that the wicked will act justly. God reveals that those who operate in deceit are motivated by self-promotion, pride, and rebellion against truth. They have no desire for the light, for the light exposes their evil deeds.
The Lord also reminds His people that accountability accompanies revelation. When God speaks truth through His Spirit, His people are responsible for obeying it. Ignoring divine instruction leads to sorrow, loss, and unnecessary suffering. Yet, amid warnings of judgment and vengeance against wickedness, God offers assurance, protection, and mercy to those who walk uprightly and adhere to His counsel.
This teaching calls believers to remain steadfast, discerning, humble, and obedient in perilous times. It exhorts them to reject flattery, resist deception, and trust God alone as their defender, guide, and source of life eternal.

THE REALITY OF CONSPIRACY AGAINST GOD’S PEOPLE
“Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
(2 Timothy 3:12)
________________________________________
God does not conceal the truth from His people. He declares plainly that many have conspired and continue to conspire against those who belong to Him. These conspiracies are not merely personal disagreements or misunderstandings; they are intentional efforts to destroy integrity, discredit faith, and undermine obedience to God. The motivation behind such hostility is deeply rooted in hatred for God Himself.
Those who oppose God’s people often mask their intentions through clever speech, false concern, or apparent friendliness. Yet beneath the surface lies deceit, manipulation, and destructive intent. God warns His people not to trust in the cunning craftiness of such individuals, for their words are filled with lies, delusions, and pretensions. Discernment is essential, for appearances can be deceiving.
Understanding this reality equips believers to remain vigilant without becoming bitter or fearful. God does not call His people to paranoia, but to wisdom. When believers recognize that opposition is a spiritual reality, they can remain anchored in truth and avoid unnecessary entanglement with those who seek their downfall.

THE NATURE AND WORK OF THE DECEIVER
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”
(John 10:10)
________________________________________
The Lord exposes the source behind persistent deception and destruction. Satan, the father of lies, has been active throughout the ages, working tirelessly to undermine those who stand for God. His methods are consistent: deception, flattery, intimidation, and destruction. Those who align themselves with his purposes become instruments of his agenda, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
Mockers and scoffers delight in deception because deception aligns with their nature. They resist truth, reject correction, and seek to draw others into confusion and despair. God warns His people to beware of such individuals, not because God fears them, but because their influence is corrosive and dangerous.
Believers are reminded that the enemy’s persistence does not diminish God’s authority. While the deceiver is relentless, God’s power is supreme. Remaining steadfast in God’s path ensures protection, clarity, and eternal security.

HEEDING THE VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”
(Revelation 2:4)
________________________________________
One of the most sobering warnings in this message concerns ignoring the Holy Spirit’s discernment. God speaks through His Spirit to warn, instruct, and protect His people. When the Spirit reveals danger, believers are not to argue, rationalize, or attempt to prove the Spirit wrong. Humility and obedience are required.
History bears witness to countless individuals who ignored divine warnings, trusted flattering words, and walked willingly into traps set by the wicked. The result was sorrow, humiliation, and regret. God makes it clear that the wicked will never administer justice; they exploit, manipulate, and destroy.
When God reveals truth, accountability follows. To inquire of God and then disregard His counsel is rebellion. God is grieved by those who seek His voice only to ignore His instruction. True faith is demonstrated not merely by hearing, but by obedience.

THE CERTAINTY AND POWER OF GOD’S WORD
“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void.”
(Isaiah 55:11)
________________________________________
God reassures His people that His Word is powerful, purposeful, and effective. Every word spoken by God accomplishes His divine intent. Therefore, departing from God’s wisdom to rely on personal understanding leads to separation from truth and exposure to deception.
The wisdom of God surpasses human reasoning. Those who seek knowledge apart from God inevitably fall into delusion. By contrast, those who pursue God’s wisdom walk securely in truth. God’s Word serves as a lamp, guiding believers through darkness and exposing falsehood.
Remaining anchored in God’s Word safeguards believers from manipulation and preserves their spiritual integrity.

THE CHARACTER AND END OF THE WICKED
“For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light.”
(John 3:20)
________________________________________
God reveals His perspective on those driven by self-promotion and deceit. Such individuals are self-lovers, driven by ambition rather than truth. They oppose righteousness because righteousness exposes their corruption. They defend liars and resist accountability because truth threatens their agenda.
The wicked do not desire God’s light. They prefer darkness because it conceals their deeds. God knows who they are, and when He warns His people against them, He expects trust and obedience. Those who choose deception over truth will reap the consequences of their choices.
God’s judgment is just. The same principle applies to all: choices determine outcomes. The righteous reap life; the wicked reap destruction.

WALKING IN GOD’S PREPARED PATH
“He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”
(Psalm 23:3)
________________________________________
God has prepared a specific path for His people, marked by obedience, humility, and dependence on His Spirit. As believers adhere wholeheartedly to this path, they remain under divine protection. Departing from God’s way exposes individuals to the same destruction reserved for the wicked.
These are times of divine reckoning, where God’s wrath is revealed against persistent evil. In such times, the wise walk reverently, maintaining humility and obedience. Carnal thinking must not override spiritual discernment.
God’s mercy remains available to those who walk uprightly and remain attentive to His counsel.
