The Power of Words and the Wisdom of a Single Master By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: James 3:1

"Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly."

Introduction

In today’s spiritually unstable world, multitudes seek voices to follow—counselors, advisors, influencers, and so-called spiritual guides. Yet, instead of clarity and truth, many fall deeper into confusion, discouragement, and spiritual failure. The Word of God teaches us to be careful about who we allow to guide us, especially in matters of faith and doctrine. The Lord is calling His people to refrain from chasing after "many masters" and instead to focus on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who alone leads into all truth. This lesson explores the power of our words, the danger of multiple influences, and the necessity of Spirit-led speech and counsel in a time of great deception.

The Dangers of Having Many Masters

Matthew 6:24

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other."

The modern world thrives on opinions and diverse counsel, yet God warns His people not to pursue many masters. Seeking truth from worldly counselors leads to spiritual confusion because their wisdom is rooted in self-interest and sin. The Lord desires His people to hear His voice clearly, and this is possible when we submit to the one Master, Christ Jesus, and the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit.

The Hypocrisy of Empty Words

Titus 1:16

"They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good."

God sees the deeds of every person. Many may profess love for God with their lips but demonstrate disobedience and worldliness in their actions. Such hypocrisy proves a heart distant from God. We are admonished not to merely speak about God but to live in such a way that our actions reflect His holiness.

Harnessing the Tongue: Speaking with Intention

Proverbs 18:21

"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."

The tongue, when untamed, becomes a weapon of destruction. Irresponsible speech leads to disappointment and broken relationships. As God's people, we must be deliberate with our words. Speaking life, truth, and encouragement must become a habit developed through submission to the Spirit of God.

The Influence of Foolish Speech in a Foolish Generation

Ecclesiastes 10:14

"A fool multiplies words. No one knows what is coming—who can tell someone else what will happen after them?"

We are surrounded by media, gossip, and thoughtless chatter. Words are uttered without responsibility or fear of God. The children of God are warned not to absorb the senselessness of worldly speech but rather to guard their hearts and ears. What we continually hear influences what we believe and eventually say.

Avoiding the Path of the Bitter Fruit

James 3:10-11

"Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?"

The heart determines the content of the mouth. Those whose hearts are far from God often speak from bitterness, pride, and rebellion. The result of listening to or speaking such words is spiritual toxicity. God urges us to bear good fruit—words that edify, heal, and restore.

Counsel From the Spirit, Not the World

Isaiah 11:2

"The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord."

The Holy Spirit is our eternal Counselor. Those who follow the voice of worldly advisers are easily deceived. Their perspectives are influenced by demonic wisdom, not divine truth. True spiritual counsel comes from the Spirit, the Word, and the discernment that comes from prayerful communion with God.

Your Words Are Either Life or Death

Proverbs 12:18

"The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

Each word we speak has the power to construct or destroy. We must decide to speak intentionally, under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Let our words be seasoned with grace, mercy, and truth, always aimed at glorifying God and edifying others.

Thankfulness Releases Godly Speech

Colossians 3:16

"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly... And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Those who live in a spirit of gratitude are more likely to speak life. Complaining and murmuring arise from pride and spiritual blindness. When we are thankful, we recognize God's mercy, His guidance, and His power to direct our speech.

Summary

In an age where careless speech is common and guidance is sought from countless voices, God's people are called to live with focus and restraint. Our words matter. Our source of counsel matters. Let the Holy Spirit be our Teacher, and let our mouths reflect the heart of God.

Conclusion

We are accountable for every word we speak. We must choose to build with our words upon the solid foundation of God’s Word and not on shifting sands of worldly thought. Only through the Spirit's help can we maintain speech that is clean, wise, and fruitful. The Lord is calling for a sanctified generation whose mouths glorify Him.

Salvation Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come before You today acknowledging that I am a sinner in need of Your salvation. I repent of every careless word, every lie, every sinful act, and every source of counsel I’ve trusted that is not from You. I believe You are the Son of God who died for my sins and rose again for my justification. I ask You to come into my heart, be my Lord, my Savior, and my Master. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and guide me in all truth. Teach me to speak life and to live for You all the days of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
