THE DANGER OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: "Let them alone; they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch." – Matthew 15:14

Introduction

Spiritual blindness is a condition that has afflicted generations throughout history. It is the state where individuals or leaders refuse to acknowledge the truth of God, choosing instead to walk in their own ways. This blindness leads not only to their downfall but also to the destruction of those who follow them. Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry, rebuked the religious leaders of His time for their hypocrisy and failure to guide the people in the path of righteousness. The same issue persists in today’s world, where many are led astray by both religious and political leaders who are driven by selfish ambition rather than the fear of God. This article explores the dangers of spiritual blindness, the deception of false leadership, and the importance of walking in the light of the Holy Spirit.

The Deception of Blind Leadership

In the time of Jesus, the Pharisees and Sadducees were religious leaders who were supposed to lead people in the ways of God. However, they chose to be blind because it suited their lifestyle of hypocrisy and pretension. Instead of receiving correction, they resisted and persecuted Christ.

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in." – Matthew 23:13

Today, many leaders in both religious and political spheres exhibit the same behavior. They seek personal gain, prosperity, and power while disregarding the welfare of those under their leadership. Such leaders do not seek God’s wisdom, and their decisions are influenced by selfish ambitions.

The Consequences of Following Blind Guides

People who blindly follow false leaders are led into destruction. The Bible warns against submitting to the dictates of those who do not seek divine wisdom. The blind cannot lead the blind without both falling into a ditch.

"If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked." – Proverbs 29:12

In these times, we see leaders who disregard righteousness and promote laws that contradict God’s standards. Those who submit to such leadership without seeking God’s direction end up in spiritual ruin.

The Call to Follow the Holy Spirit

As believers, we are not meant to follow blind leaders but to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. God has given His Spirit to direct and protect His people.

"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth..." – John 16:13

Those who rely on the Holy Spirit are kept from deception and led in the paths of righteousness. The Spirit of God gives wisdom, clarity, and discernment, ensuring that believers are not misled by false doctrines or deceitful leaders.

Separation from the Ways of the World

God’s people are called to be separate from the corruption of the world. Spiritual blindness thrives in environments where people compromise their faith and conform to worldly systems.

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you." – 2 Corinthians 6:17

Maintaining separation from worldliness allows believers to remain steadfast in their faith and obedient to God’s commands.
