THE GOOD SHEPHERD AND HIS FLOCK By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture: John 10:11 - "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
Introduction
In a world filled with chaos, deception, and spiritual battles, the identity of our shepherd determines our destiny. Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, calls His people to follow Him into safety, provision, and eternal life. However, many have chosen to follow the evil shepherd—the devil—who leads his flock into destruction, despair, and eternal damnation. This teaching aims to expound on the role of Jesus as our Good Shepherd, the dangers of following false guidance, and the call to return to the fold of God.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD AND HIS LOVE FOR HIS SHEEP
Psalm 23:1-3 - "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, deeply loves His sheep. He provides for them, nourishes them, and leads them to safety. His leadership is not oppressive but filled with love and care. He is constantly watching over His flock, ensuring that they are protected from dangers. Unlike the wicked rulers of this world, who exploit people for personal gain, Jesus laid down His life for us, demonstrating the ultimate love and sacrifice.

THE DANGERS OF FOLLOWING THE EVIL SHEPHERD
John 10:10 - "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
The devil is a false shepherd who leads people into destruction. He deceives many into believing that following him will bring them freedom, but in reality, he enslaves them in sin and misery. Those who reject the guidance of Christ fall into the hands of this deceiver, being led away from the path of righteousness into a life of destruction.

THE SHEEP WHO LISTEN TO THE SHEPHERD'S VOICE
John 10:27-28 - "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand."
True followers of Christ recognize His voice and follow Him. Just as sheep trust their shepherd to lead them to green pastures, we are called to trust in Jesus and submit to His direction. Listening to His voice means obeying His Word, following His teachings, and rejecting the lies of the world.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF REBELLION AGAINST GOD
Romans 6:23 - "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they brought upon humanity the curse of sin. Rebellion against God's commandments leads to separation from Him. Many today, like Eve, are deceived into believing that they can live without God, only to find themselves lost in confusion and despair. The only solution to this fallen state is to return to the Good Shepherd, who restores our souls.

THE RECONCILIATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
2 Corinthians 5:18 - "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation."
Through Jesus, God has provided a way for humanity to be restored into fellowship with Him. Christ is the bridge between fallen humanity and the loving embrace of the Father. Those who accept Him as their Lord and Savior receive the mark of God's sheep, while those who reject Him bear the mark of the beast, choosing the path of destruction.

CONCLUSION
The world today is filled with many voices, but only one voice leads to eternal life—the voice of Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. His call is clear: "Come unto Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). We must decide whether we will follow Him or be led astray by the evil one.

SALVATION PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I come before You today, acknowledging that I am a sinner in need of Your grace. I believe that You died for my sins and rose again for my salvation. I ask You to forgive me, cleanse me, and come into my heart. From this day forward, I surrender my life to You as my Lord and Savior. Lead me as my Good Shepherd, and help me to follow You all the days of my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
