Desiring the Truth By Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: John 8:32 — *"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Introduction
The pursuit of truth is foundational to the life of every believer. God, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has made the truth accessible to those who earnestly seek it. However, the choice between embracing the truth or falling into the snare of lies remains ours to make. This teaching explores the importance of desiring the truth, aligning with God’s Spirit, and the consequences of choosing lies and rebellion.

The Desire for Truth
God delights in giving truth to those who hunger for it. When we seek Him wholeheartedly, He opens our understanding and leads us in His ways. Proverbs 23:23 reminds us: “Buy the truth and do not sell it—wisdom, instruction, and insight as well.”
To desire the truth is to align with God’s nature, for He is the source of all truth. It is a daily decision to seek His guidance, reject falsehood, and walk in His light. Conversely, siding with lies distances us from His presence, and even our declarations of loyalty to Him become void.

The Consequences of Embracing Lies
Choosing lies leads to a life of deception, darkness, and separation from God. Isaiah 59:2 warns, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.” Lies corrupt the soul, weaken the spirit, and ultimately lead to God’s judgment.
Rebellion against the truth is the hallmark of carnality. When individuals yield to their carnal nature, they give room for sin to dominate, bringing them under God’s wrath. This is evident in the many afflictions and sufferings that befall those who stray from the truth.

Walking in the Light of Truth
Walking in truth requires us to align with God’s Spirit and resist the impulses of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 states, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” It involves daily surrender, obedience, and a willingness to be corrected and directed by God.
Those who walk in the light find joy, strength, and purpose. They are not easily swayed by the deceit of the world but remain steadfast in God’s truth. Walking in the light is a testament to a life wholly dependent on God.

The Wrath of God Against Rebellion
God’s wrath is reserved for those who persist in rebellion and reject His truth. Such individuals are blinded by pride, consumed by self-will, and intoxicated with the pleasures of the world. Romans 1:18 declares, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness.”
The end of rebellion is devastation. Those who exalt themselves against God will face the consequences of their actions, both in this life and in eternity. Their pride and self-deception will lead to ruin.

The Call to Repentance
Despite humanity’s rebellion, God extends mercy to those willing to repent. 2 Chronicles 7:14 promises, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
Repentance is the pathway to restoration. It requires humility, acknowledgment of sin, and a commitment to align with God’s truth. Those who walk in repentance will experience God’s forgiveness and the renewal of their spirits.

Summary
This teaching emphasizes the stark contrast between walking in God’s truth and succumbing to lies and rebellion. The truth liberates, enlightens, and strengthens, while lies bring bondage, darkness, and judgment. Each day, we must choose whom we will serve—God or our own carnal desires.
