PATIENCE, SURRENDER, AND FAITHFULNESS TO GOD\'S CALLING By: Major Frank Materu
KEY SCRIPTURE
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” — Psalm 27:14 (KJV)
“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.” — 1 Corinthians 3:9 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION
Patience is an essential quality in the life of every believer. God works according to His wisdom, appointed seasons, and perfect purposes. He has not called His people to run ahead of Him, force outcomes, or depend on their own understanding. He has called them to trust His leadership, walk in obedience, and wait for His timing.
Many people become frustrated because they want God's promises fulfilled according to their own schedules. They rush into decisions, accept responsibilities God has not assigned to them, and carry burdens He has not asked them to bear. Their impatience often leads to exhaustion, confusion, and unnecessary suffering.
God desires His people to learn patience, surrender their plans to Him, share what He has entrusted to them, and faithfully proclaim the gospel in every circumstance. These principles are connected: patience teaches us to follow God, surrender teaches us to depend on Him, generosity teaches us to distribute what He provides, and faithful service teaches us to proclaim Christ without waiting for perfect conditions.
This lesson calls believers to abandon self-reliance, trust God's timing, serve according to His will, and faithfully use every opportunity He provides.

LEARN TO WAIT FOR GOD'S TIMING
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)
God has appointed seasons and times for His purposes. Believers must therefore learn to wait patiently instead of rushing ahead of Him. Impatience can lead people to make decisions without sufficient wisdom, take unnecessary risks, and pursue opportunities that are not right for them.
God has not called us to lead Him but to follow His direction. When we move according to our own ambitions, we may create problems that could have been avoided through prayer, patience, and obedience. However, when we wait upon the Lord, we give Him room to direct our steps and strengthen our hearts.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
Waiting does not mean laziness or refusing to act. It means remaining faithful while seeking God's direction and refusing to force outcomes through fear, pride, or impatience. When the time comes to act, believers must act with courage and obedience.
Do not waste your life wishing that circumstances had unfolded differently. Learn from the past, accept the realities of the present, and trust God with the future. What appears desirable to you may not be what is best for your spiritual growth or God's purpose.
Wait for God's timing, follow His direction, and refuse to run ahead of Him.

PUT EVERY BURDEN INTO GOD'S HANDS
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
God does not call His people to carry every burden they encounter. Yet many believers take on responsibilities He has not assigned to them because they trust their own abilities more than His wisdom. They assume that because they can do something, they must do it.
This attitude can become a form of pride. People begin to act as though everything depends on their strength, knowledge, and effort. Eventually, they become overwhelmed by responsibilities they were never meant to carry alone.
Jesus said:
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:30 (KJV)
Christ invites His followers to depend on Him rather than live under unnecessary burdens. This does not mean that every God-given responsibility will be easy. It means that He provides grace and strength for the responsibilities He entrusts to us.
Believers must learn to distinguish between genuine duties and burdens created by pride, fear, personal ambition, or the desire to please everyone. Not every need is an individual assignment, and not every opportunity requires our involvement.
When people become overwhelmed through their own choices, they should honestly reassess their responsibilities, seek God's wisdom, and make necessary changes. Humility means recognizing our limitations and acknowledging that we are not God.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” — Philippians 4:13 (KJV)
Our strength comes from Christ, not from believing ourselves to be self-sufficient. We must work faithfully while depending on Him, maintaining healthy limits, and allowing others to carry their appropriate responsibilities.
Do what God has assigned to you, surrender unnecessary burdens, and depend on His strength.

LIVE WITH PATIENCE, PEACE, AND GRATITUDE
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” — Philippians 4:6 (KJV)
God desires His people to live with faith rather than constant anxiety. Impatience often grows when people become preoccupied with what has not happened, what they have not received, or what they believe should have been different.
Instead of allowing anxiety to dominate their thoughts, believers should bring their concerns to God through prayer and thanksgiving. Gratitude redirects the heart toward His faithfulness and helps believers remain steady while waiting for answers.
Patience is not weakness. It is the ability to remain faithful without forcing circumstances to satisfy personal desires. It enables believers to endure difficult seasons, respond wisely to challenges, and continue serving without becoming controlled by frustration.
God may use waiting seasons to develop perseverance, humility, discipline, and spiritual maturity. Therefore, do not despise the process through which your character is being strengthened.
Believers should also avoid treating speed as proof of success. Rushing through life can damage relationships, weaken judgment, and prevent people from fulfilling their responsibilities wisely. Move diligently, but do not allow urgency to replace discernment.
Pray instead of worrying, give thanks instead of complaining, and remain patient in every season.

SHARE WHAT GOD HAS ENTRUSTED TO YOU
“Freely ye have received, freely give.” — Matthew 10:8 (KJV)
God does not bless His people merely for their personal comfort. He entrusts them with resources, knowledge, gifts, opportunities, and spiritual truth so that they can also serve others.
Believers are called to share with those who are hungry, thirsty, struggling, or in need. What God provides should not become an object of selfish possession when there is a genuine opportunity to serve according to His will.
The principle of stewardship requires both faithfulness and timely action. When God gives an opportunity to serve, teach, encourage, or provide assistance, believers should not continually postpone obedience while waiting for ideal circumstances.
“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” — Hebrews 13:16 (KJV)
A gift withheld through selfishness may fail to accomplish the purpose for which it was entrusted. Knowledge that is never shared cannot instruct others, and resources that are never used for good cannot meet the needs they could have addressed.
However, generosity must be exercised with wisdom and responsibility. Believers should not give recklessly, neglect legitimate family responsibilities, or assume that every request represents a divine instruction. They should seek God's wisdom and use what they have been given faithfully.
When God entrusts something to you, ask how it can serve His purposes and benefit others. Do not allow fear, pride, or selfishness to prevent you from obeying Him.
Recognize what God has entrusted to you, and use it faithfully for His glory and the good of others.

LIVE ACCORDING TO GOD'S WILL, NOT SELFISH AMBITION
“Feed my sheep.” — John 21:17 (KJV)
God has not called His people to live only for themselves. He calls them to serve His purposes, care for others, and share the truth of His Word. Christian service is a responsibility and a privilege, not merely a means of gaining recognition or personal advantage.
Jesus instructed Peter to care for His sheep, demonstrating the responsibility of spiritual service. Those entrusted with teaching, leadership, encouragement, and pastoral care must take these duties seriously. They should serve with humility, truth, compassion, and faithfulness.
The call to serve is not limited to church leaders. Every believer has opportunities to demonstrate Christ's love through daily conduct, responsible work, encouragement, generosity, and faithful witness.
“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” — 1 Peter 4:10 (KJV)
Believers must not be ashamed of the truth God has entrusted to them. The gospel is the message of salvation through Jesus Christ, and it should be shared with humility, clarity, and courage.
Serving God means giving what we have received, not claiming ownership over His gifts. Our abilities, opportunities, and resources should be used in ways that honour Him and benefit others.
Serve faithfully, care for God's people, and share His truth without selfish ambition.

PROCLAIM CHRIST WITHOUT WAITING FOR PERFECT CONDITIONS
“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season.” — 2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV)
Some believers postpone sharing the gospel because they are waiting for ideal conditions. They assume they will witness for Christ when they have more money, greater confidence, better opportunities, or fewer difficulties.
However, perfect conditions may never arrive. A faithful servant of Christ must learn to testify through words, actions, attitudes, and daily conduct, even when circumstances are challenging.
This does not mean acting carelessly or ignoring appropriate preparation. It means refusing to use imperfect conditions as a permanent excuse for disobedience.
Our lives should reflect the character of Christ. Our words should communicate truth, our actions should demonstrate integrity, and our thoughts should increasingly be directed toward what pleases God.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 (KJV)
Every day provides opportunities to represent Christ. A believer may encourage someone who is discouraged, speak truth when others choose dishonesty, show compassion to someone in need, or explain the hope found in Jesus.
The gospel must be proclaimed with both conviction and love. Believers should not wait for a platform before serving God; they should use the opportunities already available to them.
Do not wait for perfect conditions. Let your words, conduct, and daily decisions testify to Jesus Christ.
