PEOPLE ON A JOURNEY: STAYING AWAKE AND FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture: “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION
We must continually remind ourselves that we are people on a journey through this life. We do not know everything that lies ahead, the challenges we will encounter, or the battles we may be required to face. Nevertheless, we have confidence because God is our Guide. He knows the way before us, understands every difficulty, and is able to lead us safely according to His will.
However, following God does not mean that we will never encounter opposition. The Christian journey involves spiritual warfare, perseverance, vigilance, and unwavering faith. Those who commit themselves to seeking God must learn to stand firm against every influence that seeks to draw them away from Him. The enemy seeks to weaken faith, encourage spiritual carelessness, and prevent believers from fulfilling God's purposes.
Therefore, every believer must understand the necessity of spiritual alertness. We cannot afford to become careless, spiritually asleep, or indifferent to the condition of our souls. Those who remain watchful, attentive to God's direction, and firmly established in His Word will be better prepared to withstand opposition and continue faithfully to the end.

GOD IS OUR GUIDE ON THE JOURNEY
Life is a journey whose future is not fully known to us. We may make plans and establish expectations, but we cannot see every circumstance that lies ahead. Unexpected difficulties, disappointments, temptations, and trials may arise along the way. Our security, therefore, must not rest entirely upon our understanding or ability to predict the future. It must rest upon the faithfulness of God.
When we follow the Lord, we acknowledge that He sees what we cannot see. He knows the dangers ahead, understands our weaknesses, and possesses the wisdom necessary to direct our steps. Our responsibility is to trust Him, listen to His Word, and obey His instructions even when the way forward is not entirely clear.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
Trusting God does not mean that we will never face difficulties. It means that difficulties do not have the final authority over our lives. We can continue forward because our confidence rests in the One who leads us. Even when the journey becomes challenging, we must not abandon our faith or assume that God has forgotten us.
The believer's task is to remain faithful one step at a time. We must seek God's wisdom, examine our conduct in the light of Scripture, and refuse to allow fear of the unknown to control us. Our Guide is faithful, and our duty is to follow Him in obedience.

FOLLOWING GOD REQUIRES SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Those who sincerely follow God must understand that their faith will encounter opposition. Scripture describes the Christian life as a struggle requiring endurance, discipline, prayer, and spiritual preparedness. We must not imagine that we can follow Christ faithfully while remaining indifferent to the forces and influences that seek to undermine our relationship with Him.
The enemy's purpose is to draw people away from obedience to God. Temptation, deception, fear, discouragement, pride, and spiritual compromise can weaken a believer's faith if they are allowed to grow unchecked. Christians must therefore recognize the seriousness of spiritual warfare and learn to stand firmly in the truth.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
This passage reminds us that spiritual warfare must not become an excuse for hatred, hostility, or mistreatment of other people. Human beings are not the ultimate enemy. Our struggle is against spiritual evil and every influence that opposes God's truth. We must resist sin without surrendering to bitterness, and we must defend our faith without abandoning the character of Christ.
Spiritual warfare requires more than enthusiasm or strong words. It requires a life rooted in God's Word, sustained by prayer, governed by obedience, and strengthened through faith. Believers must learn to recognize temptation, reject falsehood, and remain steadfast when pressure comes.
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:11 (KJV)
We must approach this battle with seriousness and humility. Victory does not come from self-confidence alone but from depending upon God and using the spiritual resources He has provided.

REMAIN AWAKE AND SPIRITUALLY ALERT
Spiritual alertness is essential for everyone who desires to finish the Christian journey faithfully. A believer who becomes careless may fail to recognize temptation, ignore correction, or gradually drift away from the truth. Spiritual decline does not always begin with a dramatic decision to abandon God. Sometimes it begins with neglected prayer, diminished attention to Scripture, tolerated sin, or growing indifference toward obedience.
God calls His people to remain awake and watchful. We must examine our hearts, guard our thoughts, and remain attentive to the condition of our spiritual lives. We should not assume that yesterday's faithfulness automatically guarantees today's obedience. Every day presents an opportunity to trust God afresh and walk according to His Word.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
The image of a devouring enemy emphasizes the seriousness of spiritual carelessness. Just as a watchman must remain attentive to possible danger, believers must guard against influences that threaten their faith. We must not allow worldly distractions, sinful desires, or discouragement to make us spiritually insensitive.
Being alert does not mean living in constant fear. It means living with discernment, self-control, and confidence in God. We recognize that danger exists, but we also know that the Lord provides wisdom and strength to those who seek Him. Our vigilance should lead us to deeper prayer and obedience, not panic or suspicion toward everyone around us.
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41 (KJV)
Prayer keeps us dependent upon God, while His Word trains us to recognize truth and reject deception. We must therefore remain watchful in our personal lives, families, ministries, and relationships, ensuring that our decisions reflect our commitment to Christ.

THE DANGER OF SPIRITUAL SLEEPINESS
Spiritual sleepiness occurs when believers become inattentive to God's truth and careless about their responsibilities. They may continue participating in religious activities while losing their hunger for righteousness. They may hear the Word but fail to practise it, recognize sin but refuse to repent, or receive correction but continue in disobedience.
Such carelessness makes a person vulnerable to spiritual defeat. When we neglect our relationship with God, we weaken our readiness to withstand temptation. If we ignore warning signs and refuse to respond to God's correction, we may find ourselves repeatedly falling into the same destructive patterns.
“Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” — Ephesians 5:14 (KJV)
The call to awaken is a call to renewed spiritual responsibility. We must not remain passive when our faith is weakening. We should return to prayer, study Scripture diligently, seek godly counsel, and repent of every known sin. Where we have become distracted, we must restore our focus upon Christ.
Spiritual sleepiness can also affect a community of believers. When a congregation becomes satisfied with outward appearances while neglecting holiness, prayer, and faithful teaching, it risks losing its spiritual effectiveness. The answer is not merely to introduce more activities but to return to sincere devotion to God and obedience to His Word.
Nevertheless, temporary weariness should not automatically be mistaken for spiritual rebellion. Believers may experience physical exhaustion, emotional strain, or seasons of difficulty. Such circumstances call for appropriate rest, prayer, support, and renewal. The warning concerns persistent carelessness toward God and the deliberate refusal to remain faithful.
We must therefore ask ourselves whether we are spiritually awake. Are we listening to God's Word? Are we responding to His correction? Are we resisting temptation? Are we remaining faithful when nobody is watching? These questions help us recognize where change is needed before carelessness becomes destructive.

RISE AGAIN AFTER SPIRITUAL DEFEAT
Not everyone who experiences a spiritual setback remains defeated. Some people stumble, recognize their condition, repent, and return to faithful obedience. Their failure becomes a warning that awakens them to the seriousness of the battle. Instead of surrendering to despair, they turn again to God for mercy, correction, and strength.
The difference between remaining defeated and recovering begins with the response to failure. Those who justify their sin or refuse correction may continue moving further away from God. Those who humble themselves, acknowledge their wrongs, and seek His help can begin the process of restoration.
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” — Proverbs 24:16 (KJV)
This Scripture does not encourage carelessness or suggest that sin is harmless. Rather, it emphasizes the importance of rising again instead of allowing failure to become the final word. When believers fall, they must not excuse their disobedience, but neither should they conclude that repentance and restoration are impossible.
God calls His people to return to Him sincerely. Through confession, repentance, and renewed obedience, a believer can learn from failure and become more watchful against future temptation. The experience should produce humility rather than pride, dependence upon God rather than self-confidence, and greater commitment to His truth.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
We must also encourage those who have stumbled to seek God rather than abandon their faith. Restoration may require accountability, wise pastoral guidance, reconciliation, or practical changes that prevent the same failure from recurring. Genuine repentance is not merely feeling regret; it involves turning away from sin and pursuing a different course.
Therefore, when you recognize that you have become spiritually careless, awaken and return to the Lord. Do not allow shame, discouragement, or repeated failure to persuade you to give up. Seek His mercy, receive His correction, and continue the journey in renewed faith.

LEARN THE DISCIPLINE OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Every believer must learn how to stand firm in the faith. Spiritual warfare is not overcome through impulsive reactions or emotional excitement alone. It requires a disciplined life of prayer, knowledge of Scripture, obedience, perseverance, and dependence upon the Lord.
The armour of God described in Ephesians 6 teaches believers to stand in truth, righteousness, readiness to proclaim the Gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. These are not merely religious expressions; they describe the spiritual resources and practices necessary for a faithful Christian life.
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.” — Ephesians 6:14 (KJV)
Truth protects us from deception. Righteousness requires us to reject deliberate sin and live according to God's standards. Faith helps us trust God when circumstances appear threatening, while the assurance of salvation anchors us in what Christ has accomplished. The Word of God equips us to discern falsehood and respond faithfully to temptation.
Prayer is also essential because it keeps believers dependent upon God rather than their own strength. We must pray consistently, not only when trouble arises. A disciplined prayer life prepares the heart to face difficulties with faith and spiritual clarity.
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” — Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)
Learning spiritual warfare also involves patience. Not every difficulty disappears immediately, and not every victory comes in the form we expect. Some struggles require sustained prayer, wise decisions, accountability, and perseverance. We must remain faithful without becoming discouraged by the length or intensity of the struggle.
The objective is not to become obsessed with the enemy but to remain devoted to God. Our attention must remain fixed upon Christ, whose truth guides us and whose strength sustains us. The more firmly we stand in Him, the better prepared we are to resist temptation and fulfil our calling.

PERSEVERE UNTIL THE END
The Christian journey requires endurance. It is not enough to begin with enthusiasm; we must continue in faith when the road becomes difficult. There will be seasons of testing, opposition, disappointment, and uncertainty. During such times, believers must remember their calling and refuse to abandon obedience merely because the journey has become demanding.
Perseverance does not mean relying upon human determination alone. It means continually trusting God, receiving His strength, and taking the next faithful step. We must remain rooted in Scripture, committed to prayer, and willing to receive support from mature believers.
“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” — Matthew 24:13 (KJV)
Endurance is demonstrated through daily faithfulness. We continue to obey God when obedience is costly, resist temptation when compromise seems attractive, and pursue holiness when the surrounding culture encourages disobedience. We remain faithful even when our efforts receive little recognition.
Believers must also remember that the journey is not intended to be lived in isolation. God provides fellowship, spiritual instruction, and opportunities to encourage one another. Supporting fellow believers can strengthen those who are weary and help restore those who have stumbled. We should correct one another with truth and humility rather than condemnation.
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9 (KJV)
The end of the journey matters. We must not allow temporary pleasure, worldly pressure, fear, or discouragement to distract us from remaining faithful to Christ. Every day should be lived with an awareness that we are accountable to God and called to complete the work He has entrusted to us.
