THE RIGHT FOUNDATION: BUILDING ON CHRIST THE ROCK IN A WORLD OF SHIFTING SANDS By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” — Matthew 7:24–25

Introduction

The question of foundation is not merely architectural—it is existential, spiritual, and eternal. Every life is a structure under construction, whether consciously or unconsciously. The stability, endurance, and ultimate destiny of that life depend entirely upon what lies beneath it. In the physical world, it is well understood that buildings erected on unstable ground are destined for collapse. No matter how beautiful the design, how expensive the materials, or how impressive the appearance, a faulty foundation guarantees eventual destruction.

This physical reality mirrors a far deeper spiritual truth. Humanity, across generations and cultures, has constructed belief systems, moral frameworks, and entire civilizations upon foundations that are fundamentally unstable. Many have inherited religious traditions without examination, placing their trust in systems that cannot sustain them. Others have embraced ideologies shaped by human imagination, pride, or deception, assuming them to be truth. Yet, when tested by the storms of life and the weight of eternity, these foundations reveal their inadequacy.

The central message of this lesson is uncompromising: there is only one true and enduring foundation—Jesus Christ. All other foundations, whether religious, philosophical, or cultural, are ultimately shifting sands. To build upon anything else is to construct a life that will not stand.

This lesson seeks to explore the nature of false foundations, the dangers of spiritual deception, the consequences of idolatry and pride, and the absolute necessity of building upon Christ. It is both a warning and an invitation—an exposure of error and a call to truth. The stakes are not temporary; they are eternal.

THE REALITY OF SHIFTING FOUNDATIONS

The imagery of building on sand is not abstract—it is a precise description of instability. Sand shifts. It cannot support weight. It offers no resistance to external pressure. Structures built upon it may stand for a moment, but they are in a constant state of vulnerability.

“And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand.” — Matthew 7:26

In the spiritual realm, sand represents anything that lacks divine truth. It includes false religions, human philosophies, cultural traditions, and personal ideologies that are not rooted in God. These systems may appear convincing. They may be widely accepted. They may even produce temporary comfort. But they cannot withstand the realities of judgment, truth, and eternity.

The tragedy is not merely that people build on sand—it is that they often do so with confidence, unaware of the danger. The absence of immediate collapse creates a false sense of security. Yet the inevitable outcome remains unchanged.

THE DECEPTION OF IDOLATRY AND FALSE WORSHIP

________________________________________

Throughout history, humanity has demonstrated a persistent tendency toward idolatry. Whether in the form of physical idols, ancestral traditions, or ideological constructs, people have repeatedly turned away from the true God and embraced substitutes.

“They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not.” — Psalm 115:5

The futility of false worship lies in its object. Idols cannot hear, respond, or save. They are powerless representations of human imagination or demonic deception. Yet, those who serve them often become like them—spiritually blind, unresponsive to truth, and disconnected from reality.

This deception is not passive. It is actively reinforced by spiritual forces that seek to keep people in bondage. When individuals invest their faith in false systems, their prayers go unanswered, their hopes remain unfulfilled, and their lives are built upon emptiness.

The most sobering reality is that sincerity does not equal truth. A person may be deeply committed to a belief, yet be entirely wrong. Without the foundation of Christ, even the most devout practices are ultimately futile.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF BUILDING ON LIES

________________________________________

A life built on falsehood does not remain neutral—it produces corruption. What people believe shapes how they live. When belief systems are rooted in deception, the resulting behaviors reflect that distortion.

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” — Matthew 7:20

History and contemporary reality both testify to the destructive outcomes of false foundations. Violence, oppression, injustice, and moral decay often stem from belief systems that justify or normalize such behaviors. When truth is absent, there is no standard for righteousness. When God is replaced, human imagination becomes the authority—and it is deeply flawed.

The lesson here is clear: false foundations do not merely fail to support life—they actively produce destruction. The spiritual condition of a people is reflected in their actions. When cruelty, hatred, and lawlessness prevail, it is evidence of a corrupted foundation.

CHRIST THE ROCK: THE ONLY TRUE FOUNDATION

________________________________________

In contrast to the instability of sand, Christ is presented as the Rock—firm, unchanging, and eternal.

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 3:11

To build on Christ is to anchor one’s life in truth, righteousness, and divine authority. It is not merely a confession of belief, but a submission to His lordship. Christ is not an addition to life’s structure; He is the foundation upon which everything else must be built.

This foundation is tested. Storms will come. Challenges will arise. But the outcome is secure. The life built on Christ does not collapse because its strength does not depend on circumstances—it depends on Him.

THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN GUIDANCE AND COVERING

________________________________________

Building on the right foundation requires continuous alignment with God, and this is made possible through the Holy Spirit.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” — John 16:13

The Holy Spirit is not merely a theological concept; He is the active presence of God within the believer. He guides, corrects, strengthens, and reveals truth. Without His influence, even those who begin on the right foundation can drift.

Spiritual guidance is essential. Just as sheep require a shepherd, believers require divine direction. The absence of guidance leads to wandering, confusion, and vulnerability to deception.

To be covered by the Holy Spirit is to live under divine protection and instruction. It is the opposite of being influenced by deceptive spirits that lead to destruction.

THE DANGER OF PRIDE AND REBELLION

________________________________________

One of the most significant threats to a stable foundation is pride. Pride resists truth, rejects correction, and elevates human reasoning above divine revelation.

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18

The rejection of Christ by many in His time was not due to lack of evidence, but due to pride. They expected a Messiah who aligned with their expectations, not one who challenged their hearts. This same pattern continues today.

Rebellion against truth leads to isolation from it. Those who refuse the foundation of Christ are left to build on their own understanding—and it is insufficient.

THE FUTILITY OF WORLDLY FOUNDATIONS

________________________________________

The world offers numerous alternatives to Christ—wealth, education, power, and status. While these may have temporary value, they cannot serve as foundations.

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36

When individuals stand before God, none of these achievements will matter if they were not built upon Christ. The illusion of success will be exposed, and the absence of true foundation will be evident.

Worldly systems are temporary. They are subject to change, decay, and judgment. To build upon them is to invest in what cannot last.

SUMMARY

The foundation upon which a life is built determines its outcome. False foundations, rooted in deception, idolatry, and human imagination, are unstable and destructive. They produce lives marked by confusion, corruption, and eventual collapse.

In contrast, Jesus Christ is the only true foundation. He provides stability, truth, and eternal security. Through Him, and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, believers can build lives that withstand both temporal challenges and eternal judgment.

CONCLUSION

The message is clear and uncompromising: examine your foundation. Do not be deceived by appearances, traditions, or inherited beliefs. Truth is not determined by popularity or sincerity—it is determined by God.

To build on Christ is to choose life, stability, and truth. To reject Him is to remain on shifting sands. The decision is not optional; it is inevitable. Every life will be tested. The only question is whether it will stand.

CALL TO ACTION

Turn your heart fully to Jesus Christ. Reject every false foundation. Align your life with His truth. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit daily. Build intentionally, not carelessly.

FINAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

No matter how long you may have built on the wrong foundation, it is not too late to rebuild. God’s mercy is available. His truth is clear. His foundation is secure. Choose wisely, and build boldly upon the Rock that cannot be shaken.
