TODAY IS THE DAY OF SALVATION: A CALL TO URGENCY, OBEDIENCE, AND KINGDOM MISSION By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture:

“(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)” — 2 Corinthians 6:2

Introduction

The message of salvation has never been a matter of convenience—it is a matter of urgency. The declaration that “Today is the Day of Salvation” is not poetic language; it is a divine warning and an immediate call to action. Time, from God’s perspective, is not an endless resource granted to humanity for delay, hesitation, or casual consideration. Rather, it is a sacred opportunity, fleeting and unpredictable, within which eternal destinies are decided.

Across generations, countless individuals have lived under the illusion that repentance can be postponed. They assume that there will always be another opportunity, another moment, another season in which they can “get right” with God. Yet history, and indeed eternity itself, bears witness to the tragic outcome of such thinking. Multitudes have passed from this life into eternity unprepared, having delayed their response to the call of salvation until it was too late.

This lesson confronts both the lost and the believer. To the lost, it declares the immediacy of repentance and the reality of judgment. To the believer, it delivers a sobering charge: the responsibility of proclaiming the Gospel is not optional. Those who have received the gift of salvation are entrusted with a mission—the urgent, relentless, and uncompromising declaration of the truth that Jesus Christ saves.

However, a concerning reality has emerged within many who profess faith. Comfort, compromise, and complacency have dulled the urgency that once defined their witness. The fire that once burned for the salvation of souls has been replaced by preoccupation with earthly concerns. In this state, not only do they fail in their mission, but they also endanger their own spiritual vitality.

This lesson seeks to reignite that urgency. It calls for a return to divine perspective, a rejection of complacency, and a recommitment to the mission of the Kingdom. The stakes are eternal. Souls are perishing. The call is clear: today is the day—both to be saved and to proclaim salvation.

THE URGENCY OF SALVATION: WHY “TODAY” MATTERS

________________________________________

The emphasis on “today” is deliberate and uncompromising. Salvation is not positioned as a future option but as a present necessity.

“To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” — Hebrews 3:15

The human tendency is to delay. People often assume control over time, believing they can choose when to respond to God. Yet life is uncertain, and the opportunity for repentance is not guaranteed beyond the present moment.

The tragedy of delay is not merely missed opportunity—it is eternal consequence. Those who postpone repentance risk crossing the threshold of death without reconciliation with God. In that state, there is no second chance, no reversal, and no escape from judgment.

Understanding this urgency transforms how salvation is perceived. It is no longer a distant consideration but an immediate priority.

THE REALITY OF ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES

________________________________________

The concept of Hell is often minimized or ignored in modern discourse, yet Scripture presents it as a sobering reality.

“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” — Matthew 25:46

Hell is not symbolic; it is a place of conscious, unending separation from God. Those who enter it are not there by accident but by decision—having rejected the offer of salvation.

The torment described is not merely physical but spiritual. It is the consequence of a life lived apart from truth, culminating in eternal separation from the source of life itself.

This reality should not produce fear alone, but urgency. It underscores the importance of responding to God now, not later.

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CALLED AND CHOSEN

________________________________________

Salvation carries with it a mandate. Those who have received it are not passive recipients but active messengers.

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” — Mark 16:15

The failure to proclaim the Gospel is not a minor oversight—it is a serious neglect of divine responsibility. When believers remain silent, the lost remain uninformed. When urgency is absent, opportunity is lost.

The weight of this responsibility is significant. It requires intentionality, courage, and consistency. It demands that believers prioritize eternal matters over temporary concerns.

To be called and chosen is to be commissioned.

THE DANGER OF COMFORT, COMPROMISE, AND COMPLACENCY

________________________________________

One of the greatest threats to effective ministry is not opposition, but comfort. When believers become settled in ease, their sense of urgency diminishes.

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” — Matthew 24:12

Compromise follows comfort. Standards are lowered, convictions are weakened, and the message becomes diluted. Eventually, complacency sets in—a state in which the mission is neglected entirely.

This progression is subtle but destructive. It shifts focus from eternity to temporality, from mission to maintenance, from sacrifice to self-preservation.

Breaking free from this cycle requires a deliberate return to spiritual discipline and awareness.

THE NECESSITY OF SPIRITUAL ALERTNESS AND AGGRESSION FOR TRUTH

________________________________________

The call to be aware, alert, alive, and aggressive is not excessive—it is appropriate given the nature of the mission.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8

Spiritual passivity creates vulnerability. The enemy seeks to extinguish the believer’s zeal, to silence their voice, and to redirect their focus. This is not a passive conflict; it is an active engagement.

Aggression in this context is not physical but spiritual. It is expressed through boldness in proclamation, persistence in prayer, and unwavering commitment to truth.

THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN EMPOWERMENT AND GUIDANCE

________________________________________

Sustaining this level of engagement is not possible through human effort alone. It requires dependence on the Holy Spirit.

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…” — Acts 1:8

The Holy Spirit provides clarity, strength, and direction. He enables believers to discern, to speak effectively, and to remain steadfast under pressure.

Daily alignment with the Spirit is essential. Without it, the believer is prone to distraction, fatigue, and compromise.

THE COST AND REWARD OF KINGDOM SERVICE

________________________________________

Kingdom service is not comfortable. It involves sacrifice, opposition, and perseverance.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7

Yet the reward far outweighs the cost. Every soul brought to repentance is a cause for rejoicing in Heaven.

“Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” — Luke 15:10

This perspective redefines success. It is not measured by comfort or convenience, but by faithfulness and impact.

SUMMARY

Salvation is urgent, not optional. The consequences of delay are eternal. Believers are entrusted with the responsibility of proclaiming this truth, yet many have become distracted by comfort and complacency. The call is to return to urgency, to remain spiritually alert, and to depend on the Holy Spirit for empowerment.

CONCLUSION

The declaration stands: today is the day of salvation. For the lost, it is a call to repentance. For the believer, it is a call to action. Time is limited, and the mission is clear.

The question is not whether the call will continue—it will. The question is whether it will be answered.

CALL TO ACTION

Examine your life. Are you living with urgency? Are you actively proclaiming the Gospel? Make a deliberate decision to align with God’s purpose. Speak, act, and live with eternity in view.
