YEARN TO BE BURNED NOW: THE PURIFYING FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness.” — Malachi 3:3

Introduction
In every generation, there comes a defining call from God—a call that separates the sincere from the superficial, the yielded from the resistant, and the pure from the compromised. This call is not one that appeals to comfort, popularity, or human approval. Rather, it is a call to purification, to transformation, and to a deeper reality of walking with God. It is the call to “yearn to be burned now.”
The message of spiritual burning is not one of destruction but of divine refinement. Just as gold must pass through fire to remove impurities, so too must the believer allow the fire of the Holy Spirit to consume all that is contrary to God within their lives. This fire is not optional for those who desire to truly belong to God’s Kingdom; it is essential. Without purification, there can be no holiness, and without holiness, no one shall see the Lord.
Yet, in our present time, many resist this fire. They desire the identity of being called “Christian” without embracing the cost of discipleship. They want the promises of Heaven without the process of sanctification. They seek blessings without surrender. This contradiction has produced a generation that appears committed outwardly but remains unchanged inwardly.
This lesson is a deep and sober exploration of the necessity of the Holy Spirit’s purifying fire. It confronts the dangers of compromise, exposes the deception of superficial faith, and calls believers into a genuine, living relationship with God. It is a call to awaken, to repent, and to fully yield to the transforming work of the Spirit before it is too late.

The Fire of the Holy Spirit: A Divine Necessity
“Our God is a consuming fire.” — Hebrews 12:29
________________________________________
The nature of God is not passive or indifferent. He is holy, pure, and righteous, and His desire is that His people reflect His nature. The fire of the Holy Spirit represents God’s active work in purifying the hearts and lives of believers. This fire burns away sin, pride, rebellion, and every form of spiritual impurity.
To yearn for this fire is to desire transformation at the deepest level. It is to invite God to search every hidden place within the heart and to remove everything that does not align with His will. This process is often uncomfortable because it confronts areas of compromise that individuals may prefer to ignore. However, it is through this refining process that true spiritual maturity is attained.
Those who resist this fire remain in a state of spiritual stagnation. They may maintain religious appearances, but inwardly they are unchanged. Without the fire of purification, the believer cannot fully reflect the image of Christ. Therefore, the burning of the Holy Spirit is not a punishment but a necessary preparation for eternal fellowship with God.

The Danger of Superficial Christianity
“Having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” — 2 Timothy 3:5

One of the greatest deceptions in the modern Church is the acceptance of superficial Christianity. Many individuals are content with outward expressions of faith while neglecting the inward transformation required by God. They attend services, speak religious language, and identify as believers, yet their lives remain unchanged by the power of the Holy Spirit.
This superficial commitment allows individuals to maintain control over their own lives while claiming allegiance to God. They avoid the fire because it demands surrender. They resist conviction because it requires repentance. As a result, they continue to indulge in worldly desires while attempting to preserve a religious identity.
Such a condition is spiritually dangerous. When individuals resist the Holy Spirit, they open themselves to deception and spiritual corruption. The absence of purification creates space for unclean influences to take root, leading to further compromise and eventual spiritual decline.
True Christianity is not about appearances; it is about transformation. It is not about maintaining a label but about living a life that reflects the nature of Christ. Without the fire of the Holy Spirit, there can be no genuine transformation.

The Two Choices: Yield or Resist
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life.” — Deuteronomy 30:19
________________________________________
Every individual is faced with a fundamental choice: to yield to the Holy Spirit or to resist Him. There is no middle ground. To yield is to embrace the process of purification, to surrender one’s will, and to walk in obedience to God. To resist is to cling to sin, to reject correction, and to pursue one’s own desires.
Those who choose to yield experience transformation, growth, and a deeper relationship with God. They become vessels of honor, prepared for every good work. Their lives reflect the light of Christ, and they carry the presence of God wherever they go.
On the other hand, those who resist the Holy Spirit gradually drift away from God. Their hearts become hardened, their sensitivity to conviction diminishes, and their spiritual condition deteriorates. What begins as resistance eventually leads to separation, and separation, if unaddressed, leads to destruction.
This choice is not influenced by culture, generation, or personal preference. It is an eternal reality established by God. Each person must decide whether they will embrace the fire or reject it.

The Trap of People-Pleasing and the Arm of Flesh
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength.’” — Jeremiah 17:5

Another major hindrance to spiritual growth is the desire to please people rather than God. Many individuals compromise their faith in order to gain acceptance, approval, or recognition from others. They adjust their beliefs, dilute the truth, and avoid confrontation in order to maintain relationships or social standing.
This reliance on human approval is referred to as trusting in the arm of flesh. It is a dangerous position because it shifts dependence away from God and places it on unstable human foundations. People are unpredictable; they may support you one moment and reject you the next.
When believers prioritize human opinion over divine truth, they weaken their spiritual foundation. They become vulnerable to compromise and lose their ability to stand firm in righteousness. The fear of rejection becomes greater than the fear of God, leading to decisions that are contrary to His will.
True spiritual strength comes from a deep and unwavering relationship with God. When a believer is anchored in God’s truth, they are not shaken by the opinions of others. They remain steadfast, knowing that their ultimate accountability is to God alone.

Enduring Hardness as a Good Soldier
“You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier.” — 2 Timothy 2:3
________________________________________
The Christian life is not designed to be one of constant comfort and ease. It involves challenges, opposition, and seasons of difficulty. These experiences are not signs of failure but opportunities for growth and refinement.
Enduring hardship requires strength, discipline, and perseverance. It involves remaining faithful to God even when circumstances are unfavorable. It means continuing to trust Him in times of rejection, misunderstanding, or isolation.
Many believers struggle in this area because they have been taught to expect a life of ease. When difficulties arise, they become discouraged and question their faith. However, true maturity is developed through endurance. It is in the midst of trials that character is formed and faith is strengthened.
The call to endure is closely connected to the call to be purified. Hardship often serves as a tool through which God refines His people. Those who embrace this process emerge stronger, wiser, and more deeply rooted in their relationship with Him.

The Reality of Eternal Consequences
“And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” — Matthew 25:46
________________________________________
The message of purification is not complete without acknowledging the reality of eternal consequences. The choices made in this life have eternal implications. To reject the truth and embrace deception is to choose a path that leads away from God.
There are many misconceptions about eternal judgment. Some view it lightly, imagining it as insignificant or even enjoyable. However, the reality is far more serious. Separation from God results in torment, regret, and irreversible consequences.
This is not a message intended to instill fear for its own sake but to awaken awareness. God desires that all people come to repentance and experience eternal life. However, He does not force this choice upon anyone. Each individual must respond willingly.
To yearn for the fire now is to avoid the consequences of rejecting it later. It is to choose purification over destruction, truth over deception, and life over death.
