CHOOSING LIFE OVER ENVY: WALKING IN TRUST, HOLINESS, AND ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
“Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.”
(Psalm 37:1–3)

INTRODUCTION
The voice of the Lord consistently calls His people back to a place of absolute trust, unwavering loyalty, and eternal perspective. In every generation, God’s people are faced with a defining tension: whether to trust fully in the Living God or to look toward the world and the arm of flesh for security, validation, and provision. The message before us is a sober, loving, and urgent call from God, reminding His people that envy of sinners, compromise with sin, and dependence on worldly systems lead only to destruction, while trust in Him leads to life, peace, and eternal security.
We are living in times where darkness is not only increasing but is also being normalized, celebrated, and marketed as acceptable and progressive. Sin has become familiar, fashionable, and defended, while righteousness is often mocked, resisted, or ignored. In such a context, God speaks with clarity and authority, warning His people not to be deceived by appearances, not to envy those who seem to prosper in sin, and not to seek approval from a world that is passing away.
This lesson is not rooted in condemnation but in divine compassion. God reveals the consequences of sin not because He delights in judgment, but because He desires repentance, restoration, and eternal life for humanity. The Lord reminds His people that they are pilgrims and strangers on the earth, called to live with their eyes fixed on eternity rather than temporary gratification. Daily choices, often made quietly and privately, carry eternal weight.
This teaching calls believers to guard their hearts, resist seduction, walk in the light of the Holy Spirit, and choose life over death. It emphasizes that sin, no matter how appealing, cannot redeem, fulfill, or save. Only obedience to God, fueled by gratitude and guided by His Spirit, leads to true freedom. In this lesson, we will explore God’s warning against envying sinners, His call to holiness, the danger of repeated unrepentant sin, and the blessing of walking in the clear light of His truth.

TRUSTING GOD ALONE AND REJECTING THE ARM OF FLESH
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
(Proverbs 3:5–6)

God speaks plainly to His people, calling them to complete and undivided trust. Trusting God is not partial reliance or occasional dependence; it is a total surrender of confidence from human systems, opinions, and strengths to the sufficiency of God alone. The arm of flesh, no matter how strong it appears, is limited, corruptible, and unreliable. When God’s people look to the world for security, validation, or provision, it grieves Him because it reveals misplaced trust.
The world operates on systems that are temporary and unstable. Wealth fades, influence shifts, and human power collapses. Yet God remains faithful, unchanging, and sovereign. When believers place their hope in worldly structures, they are setting themselves up for disappointment and spiritual compromise. God alone sees the end from the beginning, and only He can direct His people safely through the complexities of life.
To trust God fully requires intentional rejection of worldly dependence. It requires faith that God’s ways are higher, His timing is perfect, and His provision is sufficient. This trust becomes the foundation for obedience, endurance, and spiritual stability in times of darkness and confusion.

THE DECEPTION OF ENVYING SINNERS
“Do not envy the oppressor, and choose none of his ways; for the perverse person is an abomination to the LORD.”
(Proverbs 3:31–32)

One of the most dangerous traps confronting believers is the temptation to envy sinners. Sin often disguises itself with pleasure, success, popularity, and apparent freedom. From a surface perspective, those living in rebellion against God may seem to prosper, while the righteous face trials, discipline, and sacrifice. However, God exposes this illusion by revealing the eternal end of unrepentant sin.
To envy sinners is to misunderstand reality. Behind the façade of pleasure lies bondage, darkness, and eternal separation from God. No achievement gained through sin can redeem a soul from judgment. When people die in unrepentant sin, their destiny is sealed, regardless of their earthly success. God’s warning is not harsh; it is truthful. Sin leads to death, and continued refusal to repent leads to damnation.
God’s people are called to see beyond appearances and evaluate life through eternal truth. Envy is not a harmless emotion; it is an offense against God because it implies that sin offers something better than obedience. Such thinking slowly erodes faith, weakens conviction, and opens the door to compromise.

PILGRIMS AND STRANGERS WITH AN ETERNAL FOCUS
“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.”
(1 Peter 2:11)
________________________________________
God reminds His people that they do not belong to this world. They are pilgrims, travelers passing through a temporary realm on their way to an eternal kingdom. When believers forget this truth, they begin to invest emotionally, spiritually, and morally in a world that is destined to pass away.
Seeking approval from the world is incompatible with faithfulness to God. The world loves its own, but it will resist, mock, and reject those who live according to God’s standards. Attempting to gain acceptance from both God and the world leads to spiritual compromise and inner conflict. True discipleship requires choosing God’s approval above all else.
An eternal focus reshapes priorities, decisions, and desires. It enables believers to endure temporary hardship without losing hope, to resist temptation without resentment, and to live with purpose beyond immediate gratification.

THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF UNREPENTANT SIN
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Romans 6:23)
________________________________________
Sin is never neutral. It always produces consequences, whether immediate or delayed. God warns against repeated, unrepentant sin because it hardens the heart, blinds the conscience, and eventually leads to destruction. Darkness convinces people that secrecy offers protection, but hidden sin still carries deadly weight.
When individuals continue in sin without repentance, they choose separation from God. Though they may cry out in pain, their refusal to turn away from sin keeps them bound in spiritual prisons of shame, guilt, and bondage. God takes no pleasure in such destruction, yet He honors human choice.
Sin promises freedom but delivers captivity. It entangles the soul in deception and robs individuals of peace, clarity, and eternal hope. God’s call is not merely to avoid sin, but to choose life through repentance, obedience, and holiness.

THE GUIDANCE AND PROTECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.”
(John 16:13)
________________________________________
God has not left His people defenseless. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, believers receive guidance, conviction, wisdom, and strength to resist sin and walk in righteousness. The Spirit illuminates the path of life, exposing deception and revealing truth.
Obedience to the Spirit requires humility and responsiveness. When the Spirit warns, instructs, or redirects, ignoring His voice leads to danger. God’s people are privileged to drink from living waters that cleanse, refresh, and sustain the soul, rather than the polluted waters of sin that bring death.
Walking in the Spirit empowers believers to live victoriously, not as victims of temptation but as overcomers grounded in truth and grace.
