THE URGENCY OF REPENTANCE IN THE FACE OF DIVINE WRATH By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
"Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to the Lord, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon." — Isaiah 55:6–7 (ESV)

Introduction
We are living in perilous times—times marked by moral decay, spiritual blindness, and defiant rebellion against the Living God. What we witness around the world is not merely a social or political decline but a deep spiritual crisis. The Lord has spoken: His patience has run its course, and now His wrath is being poured out upon the wicked and unrepentant nations of the earth.
This lesson is a spiritual and prophetic reflection on God’s declaration of judgment and the call to repentance. It explores the reasons for divine wrath, the consequences of ignoring God's warnings, and the hope reserved for those who return to Him. We must understand that God's justice is holy, His anger is righteous, and His mercy is still available—but not forever.
Our prayerful study of this message will awaken us to the urgency of walking in holiness, separating from wickedness, and clinging to the mercy of God through true repentance and obedience.

God’s Wrath Is Kindled by the Perversity of Mankind
"The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished." — Nahum 1:3
The patience of God has limits. Although He is long-suffering and full of compassion, there comes a point when His holy character demands judgment. The perversity that plagues the earth—bloodshed, corruption, and rebellion—has reached unbearable levels. God’s wrath is not emotional rage but holy vengeance that seeks to correct and destroy evil.
God is weary of the defiance displayed by humankind. Despite His many calls to righteousness, people have continued to choose wickedness. Like blind men led by the blind, they stumble into deeper corruption, deceived and hardened. His vengeance is now released—not to ruin for pleasure, but to uphold righteousness.

The Shedding of Innocent Blood and the Outcry of the Earth
"So you shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed on it." — Numbers 35:33
One of the greatest abominations in the eyes of God is the shedding of innocent blood. Around the globe, violence and injustice have increased, and the blood of countless innocents cries out from the ground. From abortion to genocides to random acts of violence, humanity has abandoned the sanctity of life.
The earth itself is groaning under the weight of these sins. Natural disasters, upheavals, and environmental catastrophes are not coincidences—they are divine responses. The Lord uses nature as His instrument of judgment to awaken sleeping souls.

The Unrepentant Will Perish—By Their Own Declarations
"Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded… they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices." — Proverbs 1:24, 31
God is not pleased with the death of the wicked, yet many choose destruction willingly. The tragedy is that most people would rather die in their sin than repent. They live in delusion, calling evil good and good evil. Their hearts are hardened, and their lips speak rebellion.
The Lord respects human will. When people declare they do not want His rule, He allows them to receive what they desire: judgment now and hell later. Their downfall is not God's choice but their own.

False Compassion for the Wicked Is Misplaced
"Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Therefore the wrath of the Lord is upon you." — 2 Chronicles 19:2
Modern culture glorifies tolerance at the expense of truth. But God warns us not to grieve over the downfall of the unrepentant. We must not mistake divine justice for cruelty. When God moves in vengeance, it is because evil must be dealt with. To mourn the judgment of the wicked while ignoring the victims of their sin is to stand against God.
True compassion calls people to repentance, not to comfort in their rebellion. The Lord requires us to uphold His righteousness and declare His justice, even when it is unpopular.

The Apostate Church Will Share in Judgment
"Because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." — Revelation 3:16
Not all who claim the name of the Lord are living in truth. Many have turned aside, grown cold in their love, and embraced the ways of the world. These lukewarm believers feed off the same system of corruption and compromise as the godless.
God expects holiness from His people. Those who once walked with Him but now walk in carnality will not be spared unless they repent. Judgment begins in the house of God. Those who defile His name through hypocrisy will face correction unless they return.

God’s Judgments Are Manifested in Natural Calamities
"You will be punished by the Lord with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with windstorm and tempest and flames of a devouring fire." — Isaiah 29:6
God is sovereign over nature. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, droughts, and plagues are not random—they are signs of God’s displeasure. When society no longer responds to preaching, the Lord allows shaking to occur to wake up the masses.
We are now seeing an increase in global calamities, and they will intensify. These are wake-up calls to return to the Lord. Unfortunately, most will ignore them. Yet for those who discern rightly, these are invitations to repentance and refuge in Christ.

God Still Offers Mercy to the Repentant
"Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love." — Joel 2:13
In the midst of wrath, God extends mercy. He is willing to forgive those who genuinely repent. The offer of salvation remains open, even in the darkest times. His arms are open wide to receive any soul who will humble themselves and turn from wickedness.
Mercy is not forever, and the window is closing. This is the hour to seek Him, while He may be found. If you hear His voice today, harden not your heart.

The Lord Remains—All Else Shall Fade
"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever." — Isaiah 40:8
Nations will rise and fall. Powers and rulers will come and go. But God remains unshaken. His truth, His judgments, and His kingdom are eternal. When all is said and done, those who feared Him will remain in safety, while the rebellious will be no more.
Fix your eyes on the Lord. Let your identity be rooted in Him. Do not fear what the wicked may do, for their time is short. Trust in the Lord, your Keeper, and you will not be moved.

Summary
This message is both a warning and an invitation. God’s wrath is being poured out because of widespread rebellion and sin. From the shedding of innocent blood to spiritual apathy, the world has provoked the judgment of God. However, mercy is still available for those who repent.
The people of God must not waver. This is a time for holy living, bold proclamation, and unwavering faith. Let us not mourn wrongly for the wicked who refuse to repent, but instead uphold the righteousness of God and proclaim His way of salvation.
